Excerpts

Derrick touched her shoulder, causing her to glance up at him. She was so close—so warm. He only needed to lean forward to close the distance. Her tongue darted out, licking her lips. He inched closer. Her breath whispered against his face as his mouth grazed over hers.

10850479_974339199260365_80869135_n

Derrick pulled her closer, wanting to feel as much of her as possible. Her hands wrapped around him as they wove their way into his jacket. Olivia trailed her fingers up and down his back. He threaded his own fingers in her thick hair, pulling her into his lap. A small moan escaped her lips and he deepened the kiss, taking control as he explored her mouth. He wasn’t exactly sure what they had, but he was determined to find out.

Stand-Alone Novel

Chapter One

Olivia blinked her eyes open, slowly taking in the dimly lit room. The beige walls and bright carpet sent a chill up her spine. I’m in a hotel. She froze, her heart beating rapidly as the events of last night quickly played through her head. The bed groaned and shifted beneath her. She clutched the crisp white sheets in her hand as she sat up. Her eyes flew to the half-naked, or was he totally naked man next to her. The red and gold comforter pooled around his hips, giving her a good view of his toned back. Four long red marks trailed down his left shoulder. Are those scratches? Did I do that? Yes. Oh my god. What did I do?

Swallowing, she quietly eased out of bed, keeping the sheets pressed against her bare chest. The sheets caught and the man stirred, rolling to his side. Olivia cringed, holding her breath as she stared, praying the man didn’t wake. His eyes stayed shut. She let out a relieved breath and ran her free hand through her long chestnut locks. I need to get out of here before he does wake up.

Her eyes lingered on his face a moment longer. Stubble adorned his jaw. His cocoa hair was mussed as if someone had run their fingers through it all night long. Yeah. You did. She flinched at the reminder.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. I don’t even know this guy. Do I even know his name? One-night stands weren’t her thing. And she couldn’t even blame it on liquor. She hadn’t been drunk—or even drinking.

But she had been emotional and clearly stupid. No more solo trips out for dinner. I can’t trust myself.

Stop thinking about last night. Find your clothes and get out of here before he wakes up. Holy crap, what if he wakes up before I’m gone?

Focus.

Olivia swallowed as she shifted on her feet. Did she drop the sheet or try to tug it out from under him? Her fingers curled around the edges tighter. Before you do anything, find out where your clothes are. Her eyes flitted over the bright blue and gold carpet in search of her garments. Her shirt and bra were a few feet away, her jeans and panties a few feet further, and her shoes and purse were a few feet from the door. She closed her eyes and sucked in a deep breath. Then dropped the sheet and ran through the bedroom, scooping up her clothes. She hopped on one foot as she slid her jeans on and buttoned them. Then she tugged her sweater over her head, suppressing a curse as a button snagged her hair. She twisted in an attempt to assess the damage. A thick lock of hair was wound around the clear button. Seriously? Come on.

Olivia mumbled under her breath as she hurriedly untangled her hair. Dressed, she picked up her flats and purse, and tiptoed to the bedroom door.  She turned, taking one last look back at him. Derrick. His name was Derrick. Last night had been fun and he did seem like a nice guy.

But she was too ashamed and embarrassed at what she had done to stick around. Not to mention, wouldn’t it be awkward? What would they say to each other? What if he expected her to be gone? She shuddered. Leaving was the best solution.

Olivia bit her lip, carefully opening the door. The door squeaked and she cringed, stealing a fleeting look at the bed. Her pulse roared in her ears. Please don’t wake up. Derrick didn’t budge. She held her breath, pulling the door open far enough for her to slip through. Once the door was open she eased into the hallway.

A relieved breath escaped her lungs as she closed the door behind her. She leaned against the cool door for a moment while she gathered her wits. After a long moment, her racing pulse calmed and she set her flats on the floor and slid her feet into her shoes.

Then she dug into her purse and pulled out a small brush and hair tie, quickly pulling her tousled brown locks into a ponytail.  At least this way, the only people who would know she was doing the walk of shame would be her roommates. Please let it be late enough that they won’t be home. If they were home, she would have to deal with their questions. At least she didn’t live with her parents. She could only image what her mother would say.

Focus on getting home, Olivia, she chided herself.

Olivia rushed down the stairs and out onto the busy street. She bit her lip as she assessed her location. Having gone to school at Patterson University for the past three years, she knew the area well. It only took her a short minute to figure out where she was and where the closest train station was.

Hiking her purse up on her shoulder, she walked briskly down the street, nodding her head at the occasional passerby. Judging by the pink hue of the sky, it was still early. She could go home shower and spend the rest of the day in bed with a quart of ice cream and sappy movies.

After yesterday, she needed a day to herself.

***

Olivia slid her key into the lock and twisted the knob, letting herself into her apartment.

“Olivia.”

She looked up at the sound of her name and suppressed a groan.  Her roommate, Elena, was sprawled across the couch.

“Didn’t you wear that yesterday?” Elena asked, quirking her brow up in question as she smiled. “You and Tyler are back together?” She sat up, tucking her legs underneath her as she studied Olivia closely.

Olivia sighed. I’m so busted. “I wasn’t at Tyler’s,” she said meekly, avoiding Elena’s wide chocolate eyes.

“Wait. What?” Elena said, standing up. “Where were you?”

“I had lunch with Tyler,” she started.  “It started out okay, and then he started planning our future again and I just got so mad,” she clenched her fists tightly as she recalled the conversation. “I don’t know why he thinks I should just drop everything and move across the country. I still have a whole year left of school. And he just assumes I’m going…” she vented, shaking her head. “Anyway, I wandered around downtown for a while and ended up at Louie’s. I got talking to this guy and went home with him,” she admitted as she slumped down in the plush green lounge chair.

“Olivia that isn’t like you. Were you drinking? Did he take advantage of you?” Elena asked worried.

“I wasn’t drunk. I didn’t have anything to drink. I don’t know why I did it. I mean, I guess I do. He was nice and we got to talking—he was really easy to talk to. He was pretty hot too. He had dimples, and oh God his stubble was just right,” she said, closing her eyes, and bringing his face back into her mind. “And the sex was…” she trailed off unable to find a word worthy of describing it.

“Olivia,” Elena gasped. “What about Tyler? Are you sure you two are really over? I know things are bad now, but you have been together for years.”

“I don’t see how I can be with some one who won’t even talk to me before making life changing decisions,” she sighed. “If he’s acting like this now, how will he be when we’re married?” she voiced her concerns out loud.

Elena nodded in understanding and gave her a sympathetic look. “I know how happy you two are…were. Is there no way you can work through it?”

“The only reason he invited me out yesterday was to try and convince me again to move with him. Seriously, who does he think he is? He accepts this job without even talking to me about it, and expects me to move with him. Oh, and he was sure to mention how hard I’ve been working to get my degree. Do you want to know what the kicker is?” she didn’t wait for Elena to respond. “He said I could drop out of school and he would support the two of us. Who does he think I am? I have worked too damn hard to get to where I am to just sit idly by the pool everyday.”

“Ok,” Elena said, slowly, shaking her head her brown hair cascading over her shoulders. “You’ve been together for what three years now? You don’t just go out and sleep with a random stranger a few days after you break up. That isn’t like you Olivia,” she said, worriedly. “And really. I would love it if a man told me not to work.”

Olivia scoffed. Maybe Elena would love that life, but she found it downright insulting. “Please. I don’t want to be dependent on anyone. And like I said, I didn’t mean to sleep with him it just happened.”

“Still, Olivia, it’s not like you to sleep around like that. Even if things are bad with Tyler, this is out of character for you. Are you sure everything is okay? Nothing happened to you?”

Olivia looked at Elena seriously. “I’m fine. Yes, I acted irrationally, but I was in my right frame of mind. I don’t know how to describe it there was just something about him…Derrick. I felt like I could talk to him about anything. And things have been off with Tyler for a while. Last night was just a breaking point. But it was a one-time thing. It’s not happening again,” she assured her friend. “I mean, I snuck out this morning and didn’t leave a number and I don’t have his…” more than likely, she’d never see him again. It was probably for the best. It would give her time to focus on her studies. She only had one more year until she graduated and a dissertation paper to work on. Now wasn’t the right time to be starting a new relationship.

Even if she wasn’t looking for a relationship with Derrick, she doubted she would forget him anytime soon. He had been funny and caring. And it helped that he’d been amazing in bed, but most of all there had been a connection—one that she’d never felt with Tyler. She shook her head. It didn’t matter it was a one-time thing. She needed to focus on school.

***

Derrick reached out for the brunette, hoping to continue what they had started last night. He’d had his fair share of women, but this one in particular, there was something about her. Maybe it was because he had actually talked to her before they’d had sex. Either way, last night was a night he wouldn’t soon forget.

His hand continued to fumble through the soft sheets in search of…Olivia. The sheets were cold—she wasn’t there. He frowned, opening his eyes so he could confirm her absence. She was definitely gone. When had she left? Could she possibly be in the bathroom?

Getting up, he tossed on a pair of boxers and trudged through the few feet to the bathroom. The door was open and the light off. She was gone. A feeling of dread filled him and he let out a long breath as he ran a hand through his matted cocoa hair. Since when had he become such a heavy sleeper? Probably around the time you had mind-blowing sex multiple times with a hot brunette. He didn’t do relationships, but he wanted to see her again—at least one more time. Perhaps she’d left her number.

His eyes roamed over the hotel desk and end tables. Nothing.

“So you’ll arrest me because I spoke to a guy? Mighty protective of you, Detective.” I smiled, injecting a little charm into the turn to my lips. “I always knew there was a reason you followed me around twenty-four seven, Detective. I just never realized it was because you had the hots for me.”

A snort of laughter emanated from his dark-haired partner and I tilted my head to address him. “So who are you supposed to be? You the latest sorry sucker they found to babysit this fool?” I pointed a thumb at Fulbright who choked with fury at my words. Not that being polite to Fulbright had ever been my strong suit.

I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognize that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practise given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each other’s loves – it works wonderfully…
My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain cross-eyed.

excerpt

“Jesus, Katherine,” he mumbles as I kiss my way across his jaw and over to his ear. “What are you doing to me?”

“Kissing you,” I whisper in his ear and brush my lips against his ear lobe.

“Mmmmm hmmmm.” His hands move to my waist and guide me onto him. I’m straddling his lap and his fingers dig into my hips. I rush my hands into his hair and his head presses all the way against the couch, the leather giving in to my demands. Our tongues clash against each other exploring as if it’s our first kiss, yet knowingly anticipating our next ridge or groove. My heart races in ways I never knew possible. My hands run down to the hem of his button down shirt and to the top of his pants. I start to pull at his shirt to un-tuck it, but his hands come around and lock around my wrists restraining me from pulling anymore. I whine into his mouth.

“Why?” I mumble against the softness of his lips and smile.

“This is the first time I’m in your house and I just met your parents… maybe the second time,” he jokes and then nibbles on my bottom lip.

“Grrrrr,” I grumble in his mouth. “You are always being too good.” His eyes narrow at me and he let’s out a rough chuckle.

“Katherine, I think you know that’s not true and I’ll show you just how bad I am when we are back up at school.” His hands snake up to my shoulders wrapping around the back of my neck. Pulling me towards him and his lips find mine again. Softly he kisses me across my jaw to my ear. “Patience,” he whispers.

“I don’t want to be patient,” I pout as I push my body into him. He laughs into me and un-straddles me from his lap. We face each other and I smile shyly at him feeling a little funny by my boldness.

“Stop,” he says, and his hand latches onto my pinky finger gently rubbing it. “Don’t be embarrassed. I don’t like you having to be patient either,” he says, just before he plants a firm kiss to my forehead. I lean myself against him and rest my head on his chest. His arms wrap around me tightly making my insecurities fade. As I take in his familiar pine and masculine scent he shifts us back against the arm of the couch allowing me to snuggle myself even closer.

“You left. It scared me,” I told him, embarrassed by my fear of being alone in this dark, vacant library.

“I’m right here.” He reached out his hand. At the same time I grabbed his hand, a loud rumble of thunder roared through the old building making everything in my body tense. I screamed like a little girl and all but jumped into Jason’s arms.

“You’re okay. I’ve got you,” he whispered into my ear as I clung onto him. His hands slid down my back to my waist, soothing me from the thunder’s jolt.

The candle in the aisle next to us did little to break the darkness that surrounded us, but I could clearly see his eyes. I would always be able to see those eyes. They pierced mine as my hands leisurely moved up his chest and around his neck. He slowly took a step closer, moving us so that my back was now against the bookshelf. His hands left my waist to rest on the shelf behind me. My chest was rising and falling as quickly as his was, and it was as though our bodies were in sync. I could tell we both were feeling everything. Every butterfly that fluttered in our stomachs, every breath exhaled and inhaled, and every bit of self-control lost the longer our bodies held this position.

I couldn’t help but lick my lips. I wanted his on mine badly, they needed the taste of Jason on them again. It was as if the storm now raged inside of us, ready to be unleashed. Another loud roar of thunder around us, and then, there it was. A growl escaped Jason as I bowed my back to take a tighter hold of him. His eyes watched as my teeth captured my bottom lip, and his lips immediately found mine. For a split second, a crash of lightning appeared, lighting up the row around us. Our tongues immediately intertwined, kissing frantically as though it was our first kiss.

I slid my hands from around his neck, and up his arms, until I reached his hands, placing mine inside his. He gripped them tightly as he pulled his lips from mine and began softly placing kisses down my neck into the curve of my shoulder. I let out a soft moan, loving the feel of his wet lips against my skin. His grip tightened as his body pressed harder against mine, and his teeth bit down softly on my ear. I wanted to melt into a puddle right here on the floor. Turning my head toward him, my lips were ready to taste more of him. I kissed him and then like something fierce had stricken inside me, I bit his bottom lip. His answering growl made every pulse in my body race. I trailed my lips down his neck but enjoyed the feel of his scruff against my soft cheek first. When I got to his neck, he moved back slightly. With my hands still gripped tightly in his, I was stuck, unable to continue kissing his neck.

“This isn’t funny,” I said, my voice husky.

He leaned closer, his hold still firm on my hands. “Cassandra, I don’t know if I’ll have the ability to stop, so I have to keep your hands locked in mine where they’re safe.”

I slowly shook my head. “I don’t want to beg for this. I have never wanted anything more in my life. I’m giving this to you, and I want you to take it and never give it back. I want you, Jason.”

JASE

“I gotta go. I promised Kasey a dance,” Moose said before running off like he was up to something.

I shook my head and took another sip of water.

“Hey there. This seat taken?”

I didn’t even have to look at her to know who the voice belonged to. The sweet sound made everything inside of me melt. “For a girl like you? It’s never taken,” I told her as I finally realized what Moose was up to.

She smiled back, but this time, she didn’t take her eyes off of me. I knew the feeling all too well. I didn’t ever want to stop staring at her. She looked away and began fidgeting with her glass. The contents were clear and only confirmed what I thought I knew.

“What are you thinking about over there Cassie?” She swiveled her stool in my direction and I couldn’t help but watch her cheeks flush. It was the perfect shade of red on her. Jase, get a grip man.

“Nothing,” she replied.

The look in her eyes said otherwise. “I can tell you’re lying.”

“Fine, you seem sad, Jase,” she said.

How could she tell? How did she know? Was I not hiding my feelings or past good enough? I gazed down at the floor as I held my glass tight in my hands.

“You can talk to me,” she said, placing her hand on my knee. My skin blazed with heat under her touch. It was all I could do to keep from screaming out to her what was wrong. She had too much going on in her life to have to deal with my problems too. I was stuck. I couldn’t tell her the truth. She wouldn’t accept it and then it would just be heartbreak. At least at this point, we weren’t anything but friends. I wanted more. I couldn’t deny that part of my heart that was internally punching me for not making a move already. It wouldn’t be fair to her though.

A sudden coldness lingered over my knee. Her hand was back up on the bar. I missed her touch. I needed to touch her. We had to dance.

I hopped off the bar stool and stood behind her gorgeously dressed body. It was all I could do not to put my lips on her bare shoulder as I inched my mouth closer to her ear.

“You can talk to me too you know,” I whispered.

I moved her stool around so she was now in between my legs. “Let’s dance pretty girl,” I said.

A smile tugged on her lips. Her hand was still in mine as I started to walk away, except she didn’t budge.

I looked back; her eyes were double their normal size. “There’s a slight problem,” she said, quietly.

I moved in closer, put my hands on her knees, and leaned my ear by her mouth. She smelled so good. Jase, man you have got to stop. Focus.

“I don’t know how to dance country,” she confessed.

What? I moved back and started laughing, uncontrollably. That was what her problem was? It was adorable and innocent and in turn, only made my feelings for her that much stronger. Why couldn’t it have been that she had to go the restroom or something awkward like that?

The flesh of her palm suddenly covered my mouth and instantly stopped my laugh. My stomach knotted. It took all of the control I had in me not to press a kiss to the inside of her hand that so roughly covered my lips.

“Stop laughing, this is serious,” she said. Yes, it is serious; seriously cute.

I reluctantly took her hand off my mouth. “I’ll lead, you just follow. You’ll be okay. Just go with it, Cassie,” I told her. This time I made sure she came with me as I pulled her off the chair similar to a parent helping a child off.

The song that played through the speakers was perfect. I didn’t even plan it, but it worked out to my benefit. I really hoped she recognized it, but I wasn’t positive she would. I didn’t know if she was feeling the same pull I was and if our moment in the street was one that would stay with her, like it did me.

I took her hand in mine and placed her other behind my back. I pressed our bodies together as I wrapped my other hand around her lower back. I made sure there was no space between us, not even room to breathe. The song had me wanting her badly, and getting her as close as possible was all I could think about.

“Don’t be scared, just like we practiced in the street,” I said. Her eyes gazed into mine as if they were seeing them for the first time.

My mission at first was to get her to let loose and have fun tonight, but now, all I wanted to do was recreate the moment in the street. This was far surpassing that though.

I took control and did as I told her I would. I led and swayed us, keeping it smooth and slow, just like the song. Our eyes hadn’t stopped staring into one another since we stepped onto the dance floor, and every ounce of me wanted our skin to touch. The music kept us moving as I slowly rested my check against hers. The heat of her skin immediately radiated onto mine. It traveled down to my torso and only continued further. This girl had me flushed from head to toe. Her body suddenly relaxed into mine as my hand held onto her. It was that moment that I knew I had her; I had all of her, mind and body. And it was then that my voice box let loose and started humming along with the song.

Her body tensed in my arms and a second later her warm soft cheek slid away from me. Her eyes peered into mine as she searched them. I continued to hum as the wheels in her head seemed to turn. I know you know this song, Sweetheart. Come on. I know you do.

“This is the song you were humming in the street isn’t it?” she asked, her lips smirking.

God yes. She knew it. It came to her.

My lips grew into a smile that was larger than life. I pressed our bodies back together and finally without having her eyes to distract me, I moved my lips by her ear.

“It’s called Wanted by Hunter Hayes,” I whispered gently.

Feeling her body mold next to me as I held her, I thought to myself how nothing could ever explain how badly I wanted this girl.

Her hands moved and delicately cupped behind my neck. Feeling her latch onto me was enough to make my brain fog over and my knees want to collapse. I did everything I could to contain myself as I locked both of my hands behind her back. We were a chain link; nothing could break us apart now. Our cheeks were no longer side by side, as our eyes were now peering softly into each other. Her eyes. Those damn eyes could kill a man. The soft hazel color could get you lost if you stared into them long enough. They swirled green and brown and became lighter the happier she was. They were like a drug as they caught your attention and didn’t let go. They pulled me in and I’d be lying if I said I tried to stop it. Her whole face was drawing me in like a gravitational pull. Those eyes, those flushed red cheeks, and those pink lips. They took me in and pulled me so close I could feel her warm breath hitting my lips. We weren’t inches apart or even centimeters. We were mere millimeters, a breath and one second apart.

As the song winded down my heartbeat only grew louder. It was the only thing my ears were hearing. Boom. Boom. Boom. It accelerated faster as I moved and passed our millimeter mark. One last breath and one more second my lips would be on hers. The rights, the wrongs, and every reason why I shouldn’t kiss this phenomenal girl in front of me silenced as my breath hitched and now we were only one second from kissing.

Her eyes seared into me, her body was snug against mine and her lips were within reach. They were almost grazing, and then it happened. We stopped moving toward each other and gravity now yanked us apart. The song changed, the mood altered, and the crowd around us went chaotic. Our moment was gone, vanished. Only one second away from our lips connecting and one second was all it took to steal it away.

Was it a sign? I knew I was playing with fire, but maybe it was bigger than a matchstick flame and more like a bonfire. I almost kissed this fantastic girl. What was I thinking? I couldn’t have her. She wasn’t mine to take. She would kill me if she knew the secret I was withholding from her while I stood there, trying to kiss her and make her mine. I was more than sure this was a sign and I was even more positive it was needed.

“My turn next,” Moose shouted as he grabbed her hand. The very one that was just around my neck.

The stinging pain behind my eyes threatened as I watched her face. It had lost its luster as we both stared. Was she thinking the same thing as I was? Were the wheels turning in her mind about the coincidence of the moment we lost? The first moment I reluctantly stopped and then this one that was cut short for us? I tried to smile for her but I’d be lying if I said it was easy.

Kasey grabbed my hand and led me off in another direction, far away from the only person I wanted to be next to. I lost sight of Cassie as we got closer to the edge of the dance floor, away from the crowd. We were dancing, but it was weak and the allure of having fun on a dance floor vanished the minute my hands left Cassie.

The look in Kasey’s eyes snapped me out of my thoughts. “Why are you looking at me like that?” I asked.

“What was all that about?”

I popped a brow and looked at her like I didn’t have a clue what she was asking.

“With Cassandra. Stop playing dumb. I know you better than you think.”

I felt the tension in my shoulders relax as I let out a breath. She knew me well. Too well. Growing up together didn’t help the fact that she already knew the things going on in my life and the blank emotions I wore on my face to hide my feelings.

“I don’t know what to do Kasey.”

A smile surfaced on her face like she knew something. “Make a move you pansy ass. She likes you. A whole helluva lot. I had to get the scoop out of her too.”

“What did she tell you?” I asked her, sounding way too eager for a guy that’s twenty two.

“I’ve already told you enough. She likes you, you like her. Make your move already.”

“I don’t think it’s a go-.” She hovered her hand over my mouth and stopped what she knew was going to come out of it; the reasons why I should not make a move.

“Just go with it Jason. I see the way you look at her. Even when you brought her over for dinner at Maggie’s,” she said as her eyes went soft. “What is it you always say? Let the-the-“

Damn her and her smarts. “Chips fall where they may,” I reminded her.

“That’s it. Let them fall where they may. Make a move and let the rest work itself out.”

“We’ll see. I can’t promise anything, but I appreciate the subtle nudge.” I laughed.

“You deserve to be happy too, Jason,” she said. Her eyes went from determined to soft as she gave me a knowing smile.

She was right. I needed to follow my own damn advice. Tonight I’d let the chips fall and not look back.

B.A. spends all her free time either furiously typing stories on her laptop or happily reading through her endless TBR on her Kindle. Her list of favorites would be long enough to fill a book, but most would likely fall under the romance category. Teaser 1

As I approach, I realize I have to say something to him. What will I say? I haven’t a clue. I just have to say something, anything, but it couldn’t be any worse than him being my personal eye candy. Bravely, I look up at him and try to open my mouth, but nothing comes out. He’s amazingly beautiful. I’m speechless. And I’m never speechless.

The picture Jenny has of him doesn’t do him justice. Dark brown hair that’s all kinds of messy, gray eyes that have specks of blue thrown in for good measure, framed by thick eyelashes. I see a small scar above his left eyebrow that adds to his sexiness. Oh, and his mouth. His lips appear soft, plump and kissable. I’m thinking that with the lips, mouth, and his strong jaw line, he’s a triple threat. There’s no doubt in my mind that they have the ability to wreak havoc all over my body. Now, if his tongue pops out, I could probably have a mini-orgasm right now at baggage claim. Definitely sex on a stick. Can I get a lick please?

Ben clears his throat, and it startles me awake from my dirty thoughts. “I’m thinking you must be Sam. I really hope so because if I bring home the wrong person Jenny will kill me.”

I laugh and try not to sound like an idiot. “That’s me. I’m Sam. Love the sign by the way. Very Say Anything.” He looks at me strangely, like I just spoke in a foreign language. I quickly fumble for something to say. “You know the movie, right? The boom box scene? It’s one of my favorites. You holding the sign up reminded me of it.” Okay Sam, stop rambling. “Anyway, never mind. I’ve got all my stuff so we can head out now.” Just stop talking.

“Okay, let me help you with your things. This isn’t too bad. Are you having some things shipped out?” He bends down to secure my luggage on the cart.

“No, I really don’t need much. I put most of my furniture in storage at my Dad’s house and donated a bunch of other stuff. I’ve got my essentials, and if I need anything else, Jenny will take me shopping.” I fidget with my backpack straps to keep my body busy. I remove it from my left shoulder and begin to place it on my right one. I swing it with as much force as I can due to its weight. This, of course, causes me to lose my balance. Fortunately or not, it smacks Ben right on the side of his bent over body, and he goes down to the ground taking me on top of him. Could this get any more awkward?

My body is frozen. Holy pecs. Instead of saying sorry and getting up, I blurt out the first thing that comes into my head. “Holy chest! Fuck, I mean, are you okay? Sorry.” The fact that he just stares at me puts my nerves into overdrive. “Could this be any more awkward? I’m certainly making quite the first impression.” My voice starts strong but ends with a whimper. I mentioned his chest, stupid ass.

I can’t read the look on Ben’s face. I’m thinking it’s a mixture of surprise, amusement, but something else. Something I haven’t seen in a man’s eyes for a long time. It looks like longing, or maybe its lust? He stutters a bit. “I … I think as far as first impressions go, I’d say, so far so good. It’s not every day I have a beautiful girl fall on top of me.” He winks at me, and I feel something stir low in my belly. He thinks I’m beautiful.

“What? Is it like only every other day that a girl falls on top of you?” I try to act smooth as I get off him and reach for my backpack. I hear him laugh as he gets up, helping me with my backpack.

“Hey, be careful with that thing. You could really hurt somebody. What’s in there anyway?”

“Well my e-reader and laptop, but both are pretty light, so I’m thinking you’re just wimpy.” I fight back my laughter, but it slips out when he feigns being hurt.

“But not my chest, right?” Smug bastard! “Let’s get this stuff loaded up in the car and get out of here.”

Teaser 2

Reaching down for her bags, I gesture to go inside. “Hey, let’s get your stuff inside. I’ll show you where you’re staying. You’ve got one of the best rooms here at the ranch. Wait ‘til you see the view.”

Cursing myself for sounding like an overexcited tour guide, I walk through the door. She starts to trail behind me, but stops. She turns away from the door and walks back down the porch stairs to a row of grapevines. I put the bags down and feel that pull again to follow her.

“Is everything okay?”

She looks back at me. “Yeah, I just need a minute. I want to remember this moment—this shift.” Her hands roam down her neck while she closes her eyes. “I want to let everything soak in.” I watch her open her eyes. “I want to look at the view and see the grapevines and hills. I want to smell the sweetness of the grapes and wine. I want to hear the rustling of the leaves and the tractor engine purrs. I want to touch the vines, leaves, and grapes.” She looks back at me again, and I’m blown away. I watch a stray hair fall in front of her face. It takes all my will power not to touch her.

“You forgot taste.”

She smiles devilishly. “Yeah, I definitely want to taste. What do you suggest?” She raises her eyebrows, and I can’t keep my hand from delicately placing the strand behind her ear. Her breath hitches from my touch. Oh God, this girl is going to unravel me. It’s been so long since I’ve felt this way- it overwhelms me. The way she’s looking at me like she could devour me whole. There’s no doubt in my mind what I want to taste.

Yep, I’m definitely wrecked.

“How about our merlot? It pairs nicely with some dark chocolate.”

“Sounds perfect. Let’s get my bags in, and then we can have that taste.” Now it’s her turn to wink.

Images of my tongue licking drops of red wine that trickle down her exposed neck and breasts envelop me. All I know is if she says taste one more time, I’ll be taking a shower sooner than I thought.

 TEASER 3

Looking up into her moist eyes I pull her close to me. Our arms hug each other with a fierceness that’s getting rid of every loose fragment of damage. We’re expelling each and every bad memory and all the shit that’s fucked us up. “I don’t want to let you go. Can we stay like this for a little while longer?” Her head nods on my shoulder as she sinks deeper into our embrace.

“You feel incredible in my arms. I never thought much about guardian angels, but I think you’ve been sent just for me. Your arms wrapping around me make everything go away.”
Sam’s arms grip me with even more vigor. I feel her breath and lips tickle my ear as she turns her head into the crook of my neck. Feather light kisses touch my neck and earlobe as she whispers; “You’re wrong Ben; you’re my angel. You make me believe that love can exist.” Her head pulls back but her arms stay firmly in place. “Your voice brought light into my life when all I could see was darkness. When I’m all alone, it’s your voice that I hear when I drift off to sleep at night.”
I turn and press my lips onto hers tenderly and hold them there for several seconds before breaking away. We stay holding each other well into the night. Finally, her breaths change and I realize she’s fallen asleep on my shoulder. I gently shift her body close and place one arm underneath her legs to pick her up. She stirs slightly and turns her head into the curve of my neck and inhales deeply. “Mmm, you smell so good.”
I hold her against me as I chuckle, “Oh yeah? It’s a combination of sweat, wine, and you.”
Sighing she lifts her head with her eyes still closed. “How is it you know to say the exact thing a woman likes to hear?”
“I don’t know about that. I guess you bring it out of me.”
We get into the truck, and I buckle her up. I fight off the images of the accident and instead focus on Sam.  I listen to her steady breaths and watch her sleep. She hypnotizes me.  I’m captivated by her heart, beauty and soul. Her capacity to let me in is remarkable and humbling especially when I don’t think I deserve it. Home has to feel a lot like this because I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

Teaser 4
As I step farther into the barn, I move over to the large oak barrels lined up against the wall. The smell is heavenly, and my mood begins to improve. The air I’ve been searching for is found as I inhale the sweet scent. My peace doesn’t last long, though; I can feel his presence before he even enters the barn. My body continues its steady pace toward the back where the light is dim. The hairs on the back of my neck rise as I feel his body move closer to me. I keep my mouth shut tight so nothing will spill out. It’s his turn to talk, to take a chance. Not mine.
“You ran this time.” His voice is gruff and forces me to momentarily stop my route.
“I did. The difference between my running and yours is that I went to where you would find me.” I feel his arm touch my shoulder to turn me around so I face him. My mind tells me we should talk, but I don’t want to hear anything he has to say. My body wants him and to deny it any longer is painful. Pushing my fear aside, I brace myself for what I’m about to do. “Why did you follow me?”
“I had to. Let’s not run anymore. I’m done with denying this.” His hands move to cup my face, tilting it up.
“I asked you to dance, and you said no.”
“I’m a fucking idiot. Watching you dance with Jack nearly killed me. That should have been me dancing with you. Touching you. Holding you.”
“So, why didn’t you?”
Chuckling softly, he whispers, “I’m a fucking pussy.” He hangs his head in shame. “I knew if I touched you one more time tonight, I’d be gone.” My breath hitches as his thumb strokes my bottom lip. Opening for him slightly, I nip the tip of it before speaking.
“Well, you’re touching me right now. Are you gone?”
Taking his hands away, he anxiously rubs his hair while he steps closer to me. Leaning into me, he whispers in my ear, “You have no idea how you affect me.”

Waking up dazed and confused, Janie’s desires may have very well become reality but she can’t be sure.

I am a 28 year old married mother of 2. Writing has always been a passion of mine; ranging from poems and short stories to novella’s. My wish is to someday see my name on the big screen with a production based on something I’ve written or thought up. Reading is also a passion of mine and nothing makes me happier than seeing my son grab a book when he sees me reading on my nook or a paperback. It’s a great experience I hope to share with my daughter as well when she’s older.
