Off the Market

 Synopsis

Etta Davis didn’t have showing a house penciled into her Christmas plans, but with the other realtors already off enjoying their holiday, she’d been stuck with the task. It wasn’t all bad though, the house up for grabs used to belong to the family of her high school sweetheart, Andrew Larson. Though now dilapidated, thanks to its current owners, it still held the power to bring back forgotten memories and turn the routine showing into something else entirely. Particularly when Andrew shows up, wanting to buy the house. Now Etta must decide whether a second chance is worth taking the house, and her heart, off the market.

EXCERPT

Two amazing sexual trysts within an hour of each other, I couldn’t believe my luck. It was like something out of a dream, or a really good romance novel. I had to pinch myself to make sure it was real.
Andrew now leaned against my desk with his magnificent upper body still bare and his rock hard abs glistening underneath the fluorescent lights of my office. Normally, I would find a sweaty guy disgusting, but the way his body glistened it was like he was a Greek god and made me want to jump him. It took everything I had to finish the last of my paperwork for the offer on the house instead of staring at the way his hip bones looked and following them down to the top of his faded blue jeans.
“Okay, Andrew, I’ve filled out all the paperwork for the offer and all I need you to do is sign your X on the line,” I said, pointing a pen at the line on the freshly printed piece of paper.
“How about,” Andrew started, meeting my gaze with his bedroom eyes. My legs instantly turned to gelatin just from his gaze. “We put two signatures on this line, one for me and one for you.”
I blinked once, then twice. I didn’t think he could be serious. Did he mean what I thought he meant?
“Beg your pardon?” I asked.
A large grin spread across his lips, softening the face that moments ago was buried in my chest. “I mean that we should move into that house together.”
He walked around the desk, pulling me up and out of my chair so that I was facing him. His lean body towered over me and my legs were shaking from more than just his eyes at that point. “Think about it, Etta. I could do all of the structural work and you could help me decorate and do cosmetic work. I know you love decorating and I’d even find a place to get all of your romance books out of the office.” His eyes lit up like a kid that saw his gifts on Christmas morning.
“It can be our home, what do you say?” he asked.
I fluttered my eyelashes, looking up and then down before biting my bottom lip. “I don’t know, Andrew, we just got back together. And I’m not even sure what this together is. How do we know it’s going to work? You are kind of putting your ex on the line here. And I’m speaking in terms of girlfriend, not the symbol.”

Synopsis

Willow needs a miracle…

Twenty-year-old Willow is a librarian in the tourist town of Bandon, Oregon. During the summer the town is bursting with interesting people from all over the world.

Two summers ago she met Austin. He was everything she ever wanted in a man: smart, funny, and gorgeous. But after eight perfect weeks he left, and she hasn’t heard from him since.

Until Christmas Eve. She receives an email from Austin asking her to meet him at midnight so he can explain.

It might be a booty call, but Willow has to see him one last time, even if it’s just to say good-bye.

EXCERPT

He cleared his throat and shifted in the blanket. “I was married,” he finally whispered.
My mind screamed. No. No. No. No. No. Married? He said ‘was.’ Did that mean he wasn’t married any longer? “Was?” I asked, finishing off the wine, grabbing the bottle, and refilling my glass. I had a feeling I’d need it.
“Yes. We married right out of high school, attended college together. Started our careers together.” He smiled and my heart shattered.
“What happened?”
He gulped down the rest of his drink. “She died,” he finally said.
That surprised me. “I-I’m sorry, Austin.” I took another drink. Is that why he left suddenly? Had he left her and she died? Was it my fault?
He stared into the fire, the flames dancing in his faraway eyes. “She was the love of my life. I knew with absolute certainty there would never be another woman for me…” He trailed off.
I stopped breathing.
What did that make me? A booty call? Had he come back to try and forget her? That seemed like a lot of work. The man was extraordinarily handsome. I had no doubt droves of women wanted him. So maybe it was guilt. He came back to tell me he was sorry he’d left abruptly.
But I didn’t want to hear that. I realized the only words I wanted to hear from Austin were words that meant we were supposed to be together.
His wife had been the love of his life, but Austin was the love of mine, regardless how little time I had left.
God, it hurt. The fucking knowing.

 Synopsis

Would you wait?

College student, Hope Camden, is relentlessly serious, awkwardly shy and in complete need of taking a walk on the wilder side. At least, that’s what her sister tells her when she drags her off` for an impromptu Christmas getaway in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Hope’s plans to keep her nose in a book the entire vacation are thwarted when she meets Jack Freeman, the gorgeous and enigmatic Army helicopter pilot staying at the same resort. What was supposed to be a quiet Christmas holiday turns into a life changing event for Hope and Jack. The only problem? Jack is headed off to war, and there is no guarantee he will come back.

Image

EXCERPT

“So, what exactly is your level of snow experience, Miss Camden?”

I look up at Jack as we are walking, his hand tightly gripping mine. The sun is brilliantly shining and his eyes are sparkling sapphires today. “Sadly, I’m a snow virgin. This is my first time.”

He stops walking and just looks at me with astonishment. “You’re kidding?”

“Nope. We don’t get snow in Florida, in case you haven’t heard that news flash.”

He rolls his eyes at me. “Well, there are certain things that a snow virgin has to try, and I list these in no particular order. Let’s see… there’s making snow angels, and we have to build a snowman, and of course, who can resist a good old-fashioned, snowball fight… and last, but certainly not least, you simply have to try this really cool trick of sticking your tongue to a flagpole.”

I start laughing and playfully punch him in the stomach. “I can’t believe you’d try to get me to fall for the ‘stick your tongue to a flagpole’ trick.”

He shrugs his shoulders and puts a mock look of shame on his face. “What? I thought a Florida girl wouldn’t know about that dirty trick.”

“We do have TVs in Florida, you know? I’ve seen A Christmas Story only about a million times.”

“Damn. Caught me. No matter. I have better uses for your tongue.” Jack steps in close to me and grabs hold of my hips. My breath comes out in a rush, pluming white in the cold air.

“You do?” I say, my voice shy and husky all at the same time. “Like what?”

“Well… I was holding out on you, but the actual very best thing to do in the snow is to kiss.” His head lowers toward mine but he just stares at me.

“You don’t say?”

I anticipate his lips touching mine but he doesn’t move. “It’s the truth. But before we do that, we have to make quick snow angels first.”

Synopsis

I want to tell you how great my life was. How I lived without regrets. With constant laughter. Without any tears. I want to tell you how I lived each moment to the fullest. How each breath I took was fresh and full of life. With eagerness. Without any fear.
I want to tell you all of that, but then my story would be masked with lies and not worth telling.
My life didn’t start until I left my past. And I left everything. My mother, my friends, my name.
My new name, the name everyone knows me by is Erin Lewis.
Four years after finding the courage to leave her hometown in Alabama, Erin is finally happy with where her life has led her. Not only is she secure in her environment, but the relationships she has formed center her, making her forget how damaged she once was. Before she can fully settle into her new life, her past crashes into her present, unraveling a set of events that destroy the very foundation she has built her new life on.

The truth is I was born into a family in which the word “family” in and of itself was laughable. I never met my father and there are times I wish I would never have met my mother. Try as hard as she might, she never fully accomplished the task of ending her life. Which, really, was a shame. How much easier my life would have been if she had just ceased to exist.
While her anger was something to be reckoned with, the malice induced by her addictions was something that should be avoided altogether.
I learned at a very young age that home was not a place I wanted to be.
I should have stayed in my hometown in Alabama, pissing my life away until I wound up another statistic; pregnant with a fatherless baby. That should have been my story, but I never received that particular script, so I forged my way in my own manner.
My life didn’t start until I left my past. And I left everything. My mother, my friends, my name. Yes, my name. I will not tell you what my name used to be because it is irrelevant. That person should never have existed.
My new name, the name everyone knows me by is Erin Lewis. It is a name common enough so that I can blend, but bright enough so that I may shine. And that is what I want, to shine so brightly that the darkness of my past is but a small speck of dust.

Reviews
Life’s A Cappella…..the song that life sings for us, it changes day by day, as circumstances change. How we react to life and those circumstances depends on the music that we fill our life with. Whether it be a love ballad, or a dark song of heart ache and depression. Erin lived by the notes of different songs, letting the music flow freely through her veins enveloping her to live like a free-spirited phoenix. Although her young life had been scarred of turmoil and heartache, she refused to let that define who she is today, as she lived each day to the fullest, paving a new road in her new life. She had erased her past. She had new friends that she loved, and cherished, and was slowly beginning to fall in love. The record skipped and the song changed as did Erin’s life, dramatically. It takes overwhelming heartache and loss for Erin to open her eyes to see that no matter how far you run, your past is still there, lurking in the dark, but it’s the choices that you make, that determine your future.
A debut novel…such a surprise, for a beautifully written novel. Life’s A Cappella is absolutely captivating. From the beginning, I felt free, then sadness, heartache, and happiness. I could feel each of Erin’s emotions tug at my heart as I read Life’s A Cappella. Yessi Smith is a very creative author, tangling her love for music, with such a story. The story feels so real and authentic, it connects you to the character, as you feel every ounce of emotion with them and for them. I can’t wait to read more from this up and coming literary rock star!! – Author Silla Webb  (Amazon)

This is a really touching story of Erin, a young woman who left her old life behind her.
She is finally settled into her new life. She has made good friends & is in a relationship, and is trying very hard to forget her old life.
Then tragedy hits & she is thrown back into her old life. Erin then has to face her demons to go forward into a completely new life.
This story tackled a very sad topic very well, not too over the top, but with just enough detail to touch you.
I found myself very emotional, crying & laughing.
This is a really good read.

I’m a Hispanic living in South Florida with my redneck husband from Texas and our “half breed” son, who is actually the reason I started writing again after years of celibacy. My son loves stories, but not the kind you can read in an existing book. No, he’d rather make up a story, complete with our own illustrations. So, thank you, Son, for igniting a flame I had let go out. I also live with two dogs: a neurotic Border Collie we call Nitro and a midget Rottweiler named Nisa. I  have always found my sanctuary at the beach and in music and writing. I wish I could write rhymes so I could become a famous rapper, but rhyming is completely lost on me. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a Master’s in Human Resource Management. I have held several jobs, from picking up dog crap to upper management positions. And now I am hoping to leave the business world behind so I can live full time in a world that does not exist until I place my fingers on a keyboard and bring them to fruition.

Synopsis

Two years ago, when Ivy Emerson bailed from the tiny fishing village she’d grown up in to go to Columbia, Sawyer McCallister was the only thing she was sad to leave behind, and she still didn’t look back. But when her mother guilts her into coming home for Christmas, she crashes headfirst into Sawyer, who’s also returned after being away.

Now that they’ve both been dragged back to Saltwater, Maine, they might just realize it’s where they belong. Together.

EXCERPT

“I’m sorry,” I say. I mean for breaking up with him and for a lot of things. About his dad. He and Sawyer were never close, which was one of the reasons we got along so well. He was really close with his mom, though.
“What are you sorry for, Ivy?” Ah, the old Sawyer is back. He never let me get away with vague statements. He always made me explain them. Big fan of honesty, that boy.
“I’m sorry for a lot of things.” I look down at my shoes. Our toes are almost touching.
“Maybe . . . maybe we can sit down and talk about some of them. It’s . . . it’s really good to see you.” I look up from his feet and see that he’s serious. God, it’s good to see him. I didn’t know how much I missed him until he popped up in my life again.
“It’s good to see you, too. I have to get home, but maybe later? Where are you living now?”
“I’m back at home, but they built me a place over the garage. Come around five and we’ll talk. I’ll make sure I have plenty of vanilla Coke and Red Vines.” The mention of the Coke and Red Vines makes my heart stutter for a moment.
“You still remember that?”
“I couldn’t forget if I wanted to. See you at five.” With that he backs the cart up and vanishes down another aisle.

Synopsis

In the season of hope, in the season of giving…

How far would you go for your friend?

Alissa Thompson has been the good girl her whole life. Her uninterested parents don’t understand her hopes and dreams. But this Christmas when her steadfast childhood friend Charlie needs her more than ever, she can’t back down. Crossing the line means being braver than she has ever been in her life. It means changing and growing and taking a stand.

Dakota Gray was brave in the face of debilitating fear. But he lost himself in that blood soaked day and has shunned everything he once knew. Now shattered and broken, he hides out in isolation, his wounds beyond healing. His heart closed, his emotions buried, he’s a man on the edge of self-destructing. Little does he know that courage would be found in another searching for the strength to be brave.

Now snowbound in the Colorado Rockies one week before Christmas, Alissa thought this was about her journey and her friend, about setting him free. But from the moment she meets Dakota, she learns about what real bravery is all about. What real love is all about. But is the season enough, her courage enough, her love enough to heal this hero’s brave heart and in the end set herself free?

EXCERPT

Dakota

I was vibrating with the memory of her skin against mine. The sounds of her distress had triggered another flashback. It wasn’t her fault. She hadn’t meant to do it. But after four months of successfully keeping the flashbacks at bay, I’d had two in her presence in less than an hour. She’d only been worried about her own burden. I didn’t know what it was, but I recognized the sadness in her eyes. The loss of something precious.

But it was her scent that had brought me back, the glorious feel of her arms around me. None of this made sense, though. I barely knew her, but it was as if our hearts knew each other. I didn’t normally go in for that kind of crap, but it was true.

I closed my eyes thinking about how close her lips had been to mine. It had been such a long time since anyone had touched me. It had felt so good, so f**king great, but I couldn’t allow myself to get used to it. I’d come here for the isolation, to suffer alone with my failures and pain. No one was allowed to help me. I couldn’t bear it, no longer had the courage to try.

Seeking calm, I focused on getting Alissa’s dishes washed. I knew I had to touch her again and I didn’t want to. But she was injured. She couldn’t walk with her sprained ankle. She probably thought I didn’t want to touch her, but that wasn’t the real truth. I did want to touch her. I ached to. But once the snow stopped and she did what she came to do, she’d be gone. I’d be alone again. That didn’t hold as much appeal as it had only a few hours ago.

I bent down and slipped my arms around her, gritting my teeth as my senses stretched open painfully, like muscles that hadn’t been flexed in a long time. My whole being cried out for the comfort, for the simple human contact. I went down the hall adjacent to the kitchen to the spare room next to mine. I wanted her close, in case she needed me.

Bully. Tormentor. Lover.
West Diaz has been all of these things to me.
After being gone for two years, he’s back, begging for my forgiveness. And not just my forgiveness… He wants more.
He wants… Me.

EXCERPT

Tears gather on my lashes, a few falling as I blink. “I don’t understand why you’re doing this. I was fine until you showed up.” I swallow a sob. “Why couldn’t you leave me alone?” I realize that I’m not just referring to him showing up all of a sudden, but rather years of West being a constant thorn in my side.
He uses the pad of his thumb to gently wipe away the tears on my face, leaving tracks of heat. “Because I was a stupid high school jock.”
I make a noise, swallowing yet another sob. My heart is pounding, and I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop. This has to be a joke. “And now you’re all mature?”
West’s expression turns as serious as I’ve ever seen. “I’d like to think so, but only you can be the judge of that.”
“I don’t want to be the judge.” I sniff, tears falling faster. “I want you—”
He kisses me, softly. Lightly. A gentle pressure of his lips to mine, and yet it feels as though he’s taken a sledgehammer to my body, breaking me into tiny pieces.

Synopsis

There’s only one place in the world where I feel normal—the roller derby track. When I put on my skates and fasten my helmet, I’m powerful and in charge. I know exactly what to do and what to say. The rules are clear and everyone does exactly what they’re supposed to, penalties are enforced for those who don’t.

But in the real world, I’m far from powerful and in charge. I never know exactly what to do and say. For years, I counted on one person to be exactly who he said he was—my best friend -Wyatt Tanaka.

Only he’s changed. Being a Marine and serving in a war has made him different. Now I want to help him, but I also want to kiss him. And that’s not something best friends do.

Neither of us, it seems, is content being just friends anymore. If we cross that line, change the rules of our relationship, it could be wonderful and everything I’ve ever wanted.

But it might also mean I’ll lose the one person I’ve come to rely on and I don’t think my heart can take it.

Synopsis

When Taylor Flinn’s parents shipped her off to an aunt for her last year of high school, James “Clutch” Mason had convinced himself it was for the best. Taylor, the wild, impulsive and far-too-appealing seventeen-year-old had been driving him nuts. Her school girl crush on him had been the last thing he needed. Now he had time to concentrate on his booming classic car part business, his new found love– drag racing, and keeping his twenty-year-old brother Barrett out of trouble.

But when Taylor returns from her aunt’s more grown up, utterly seductive, and attached to another guy, Clutch realizes that the only thing he ever needed or wanted was Taylor Flinn.

Excerpt

She came around the corner, unexpectedly and like a hurricane of stars. My mind went completely blank. I hung up and stuck the phone in my pocket.

Taylor’s long lashes curtained her smooth cheeks as she dropped her gaze.

The adrenaline rush left behind from getting my hands on a sixty-five Shelby morphed into an explosion of every emotion I’d ever felt. I lunged forward and grabbed her hand. She gasped as I dragged her around the back of the building.

I pressed her up against the bricks and stared down at her.

Blogger Review

Hello Readers, I am currently reading this book. I am about half way through so far. So more details will come later. But, for now let me tell you that Tess Oliver is a new author (at least to me). Clutch is the first book by this author that I have read. So far I generally like the book.  I am glad to know that this is a series. Series are my preference when reading. I enjoy connecting with the same characters. Seeing familiar names, backgrounds and new adventures arise with said characters. To me a series brings a reader closer to the characters in the novel. The novel seems more real. Like you might actually know the hero and heroine, and their friends in REAL life. It leads to new developments in a novel that you really hated to see end. Know it continues with new plots and twists.

Clutch is actually Book 2 in Tess Oliver’s Custom Culture Series. However, Clutch can be read as a Stand-Alone novel.  During the read, the reader comes to learn a little about the tight group of friends that help in developing the story, as well as leading to side stories that (at least I hope) will develop into future books in this series.

Chapter 1 start out with the main character (hero) Jimmy aka Clutch in an auto race. It isn’t until later in the chapter that the reader hears this characters name mentioned. While at the track readers are introduced to some of the other characters in the novel. There is Dray, who through his description must be a fighter of some sort.  His girlfriend is Cassie, who has taken up photography and works in FreeFall, Nix’s Tattoo shop. Nix is a good friend and school mate of Jimmy’s (Clutch). Nix is who the first book is about and where the reader first meets this group of characters. Scotlyn is Nix’s girlfriend. In Clutch , the reader gathers that she has had a very hard and difficult life, and that she does not talk very much. Also that Nix loves her very, very much!

The night starts out pretty exciting for Jimmy (Clutch), that is until he comes home. You will have to read the book yourself to find out what happens at this point. As another character is introduced into the novel at this point.

Readers will pick up that Jimmy (or rather James, aka Clutch) is all about classic cars. He and his other good friend, Jason own a classic car repair shop. Now this part is interesting to me, because my brother does the exact same thing. So when the book mentions car shows, and how excited characters get over a certain car, I can actually imagine what that would be like.

Off and on in the beginning of the book the name, Taylor is brought up. What readers can gather  at this point is that she is an older high school student that has a huge crush to the very tall and well built Clutch. Apparently she likes to make herself a nuisance, and is always getting into trouble showing just how big a crush she  has on Clutch. This ultimately gets her sent to Florida to live with a dull aunt for a while during her senior year of high school, (which takes place all in FreeFall, Book 1).

In Clutch, Book 2 of the Custom Culture Series, Taylor has returned home for her eighteenth birthday. Readers now find that she has made a deal with her parents, that she will basically straighten up and fly right (as my own parents still tell me to do at over 40).  So she shuts down her spunky outgoing spirit and dates Adam who is the hottest guy in the senior class. But is Taylor really happy? Her brother sees her as a troublesome nuisance, her mother sees her as hyper and messy (compared to her own quiet temperament, love of all things spit-spot clean and tidy, and dull interests). Her dad…? Well so far the reader will only know how much he likes to yell.

Taylor’s family is constantly watching her, questioning her, and under the spell that Taylor has changed her life. Ah… but has she really?

Taylor has had serious feeling for Clutch since she was sixteen. Clutch has also had a secret crush on her, though he has never shown it. After all she is just a ‘kid’ compared to him, and his best friends sister.

In Clutch, readers  will discover two people that care about each other, but due to this, that, and the other, their feelings get miss understood and hurt feelings come into play. Thus creating the plot for this novel. Will they ever ‘make up’ and become a real couple? Well readers I have not read that far yet. And even if  I had I would not ‘spoil’ the novel for you.

Rating as of 11-30-2013

New Image

As of right now my ranking of, Clutch is a 3.5

Earlier I mentioned that I am new to the author, so I am not sure about her style of writing yet. The more I read, the more I will understand in this regard. So far the book has been an easy read. Wording is simple, the chapters are not overly long. Both Clutch and Taylor take turns, giving the reader a POV perspective of said characters. It takes several chapters before Clutch and Taylor actually meet. When they do, sparks fly…but I am not telling you just HOW they spark!

Currently I am on chapter 13, so not quite halfway done with the novel yet. In all there are 29 chapters in this particular novel.

The dialogue has mostly been among the guys in the novel. Cassie, Scotlyn, and Taylor have had minor roles this far in.

The only romance so far has been one HOT kiss between two characters and some sweet kisses between others.

I plan to finish the book, I want to see how it ends. Then depending on my reading schedule, I already have Book 1, FreeFall  in my TBR (To Be Read) collection. Remember I said I liked reading books are a series. Even though Clutch can be read as a stand-alone, I am curious to read the first book and see how the series starts from the very beginning. Thus, probably filling in holes from Clutch, since I am new to all of these characters.

Readers, if you like big hunky guys with long blonde hair, classic cars, tattoos, and a little romance and mystery thrown in, then this book is for you.

Synopsis

She thought she was on the right path, but life keeps tugging Addison back to her past and her gift.

Addison Lee struggles to make a new life in Norwich, one where she can be the Battalion Chief of Fire Station Seven and live life as she sees fit. She wants a life without the complications of an ex-fiancé and a job that put her life on the line for little more than a gift she was born with. Learning the ropes of a new job can always be tough,

and being a Battalion Chief means she has a great responsibility to her crew and to the city. Nervous about her first day already, Addison realizes that adding in a one-night stand with a future employee has left her on rocky ground.

Plagued by visions of a dying woman, Addison continues to cope with difficulties at her new job. She has no idea who the dying woman is, where she is, or even, when she is—and no means to find out. Addison is distracted from the dying woman and her new job when called to Wyoming on an emergency, where she discovers it’s not as easy to leave her past behind as she hoped.

Excerpt

Giving voice to such a thought, she said, “I think I like it better here than Chicago already.”

“That’s because the jackass isn’t here.”

“Really, Rob?”

All the energy in her body was sucked from her in a giant whoosh.  Setting her food to the side, she stood up and left him alone.  She was beyond tired of the snide comments about her ex and the way they popped up seemingly every hour.  If it wasn’t for the jackass,

she wouldn’t be moving.  If the jackass wasn’t a jackass, she would still be at her old job.  Addison was through with such conversations.  She was supposed to be starting new.  Moving into the bedroom, she fumbled through a few suitcases until she found a fitted sheet.

Paying no mind to her brother, who had followed her and was leaning against the doorframe, she threw the sheet onto the bed and started tucking it in.  Anything would do on the mattress so long as she could sleep on it within the hour.

“Addy,” he called her name softly as she pushed the last elastic corner over the edge of the bed.

Standing straight, Addison walked to the corner of the room where she knew her blankets were.  Holding onto an edge, she threw her hands up, letting the material flutter down on top.  Licking her suddenly dry lips, she turned toward the door but refused to make eye contact with her brother.

“Addy.”

Walking to the closet, Addison gripped the bag she packed specifically for Rob and shoved it into his arms before stalking to the bathroom.  Slamming the door shut, she leaned against the wood.  The break-up with her ex was never going to end.  Gritting her teeth, she ripped into one of the four boxes in the tiny room.  There had to be towels in at least one of them, because if she had to go back out into the hall, she was going to break down.  She wouldn’t be able to handle it.

She shut the lid to the first box and started in on the second.

“Asshole for a brother is what I have,” she muttered under her breath.  The term might have been adequate, but it didn’t mean that she needed to be reminded of his problem with spouting whatever came off the top of his head every day.  Nobody had liked the

jackass; that had been clear from the start of their relationship.  Huffing a breath, she gave up on the second box and started on the third.  Her wrist came up to her face, and she brushed it against her cheek, washing away the salty drops.

“It never ends.”

She ripped the flap open and three quarters of the way off the box as she tried to get inside.

“Where the hell are the towels?” she growled in an attempt to remain quiet.

She let anger have its way with her.  Shoving the top of the box down, she moved to the final cardboard container.  As she reached for it, she heard the soft knock on the door.  Gripping the handle, she wrenched it open.

“What!?”

Rob stood before her, head bowed, eyes downcast, with two towels in his hands.

“I thought you might want these.”

Her mouth opened and closed.  She gripped the fluffy cotton tightly after taking it from him, cradling the material to her chest.  Her eyes started to water.  Praying and hoping that the tears wouldn’t surge forward, Addison stood as still as possible.  Maybe if she didn’t move, no one would notice.  Maybe if she stopped time by ignoring it, then Rob would have no idea that she was about to break.  The jackass should not still be able to affect her.  Her cheeks reddened at the thought.

Giving in, she swallowed hard.

“Thank you.”  She quietly spoke, her voice barely above a whisper.

Rob ignored her silent call for privacy and wrapped a long arm around her shoulders, tugging her into his body.  She stumbled forward into his chest and sniffled.  Her shoulders were tense, and she used the last dregs of energy she had used to keep her back rigid and straight.  She didn’t want to give in.  She took another deep breath, the air sticking in her throat as she tried to release it.

Addison started to sob.

Her body jerked, and she swayed into him.  The majority of her weight rested against Rob’s chest, and she buried her face into his shoulder.  Dropping the towels to the floor, she fisted her hands behind his back.  She didn’t want to move.  Had he asked two seconds before, she would have shoved him off and ran for the mountains just to get away from the stark reminder of her failed relationship.  Now that the emotions flowed freely through her veins, now that she sobbed against her brother, she couldn’t have thought about being elsewhere.

They stood like that for a good twenty minutes.  Rob ran a hand through her hair, the brown locks twisted around his fingers and tangled as he reached the ends.  He tugged his hands through and did it again and again.  When Addison pressed two palms flat against his chest and pushed back, he released her after pressing a quick kiss to the crown of her head.

“You’re an asshole,” she muttered, her face still buried in the sweatshirt he wore.

“Yup, but I’m a loving asshole.”

She stepped back and brushed her fingers under her eyes.

“I’m going to take a shower.”  Pointing her thumbs over her shoulder toward the small shower behind her, Addison retreated another step.

Rob sneered and reached around the corner bringing another item into her view—the shower curtain they had bought at the store earlier.  “That shower was not made for people of my stature.”

That earned him a quick grin.  Addison replied, “Well, it’s a good thing you won’t be here long.”

She pushed at his shoulders until he was far enough out the door that she could shut it.  Moving to the sink, she did a double take and reached for the small lock, flipping it.  Too many times the door had burst inward while she was standing naked at the sink; the jackass barging in on her unwelcomed.  Addison shivered at the memories, and the cold look he always gave her before locking the door behind him.

Author Interview

Please tell us what made you decide to try to become published? How did you get started?

I have always wanted to be published, since I first started writing when I was twelve years old. I think I just thought it would be really cool to see my name in print. The more I wrote, the more I just wanted to share my stories with other people who would love the same type of stories. That’s still what it’s about to me. I was asked one time whether or not it would make a difference if I was published, and I have to honestly say the answer is no. It wouldn’t matter. I would still be writing and sharing my stories to the best of my abilities.

As for starting in the publishing world, that happened by sheer luck and amazing people. I met someone on twitter, and poof, had a publisher less than a year later! Go figure.

Tell us two random things about yourself that might shock or surprise us.

Well I don’t know how much it’ll surprise some people, but two things. I’m absolutely in love with pumpkins—year round any time I can get ahold of them, I keep them. Secondly, I have a Muppet phobia that plagues me more often than it should.

Tell us about James Matthews and her trilogy, without spoilers of course!

Without spoilers? Can’t I just say what happens in every single book so that no one has to read it? Umm…James Matthews is a firefighter who has started to become a bit disillusioned with the job. It’s not what she expected or wanted it to be. Instead of going to fires, she mostly goes to medical calls. However, James has been to one house fire where she saved a two-year-old girl, Lily. Two years later (where we come into the story), James keeps having recurring nightmares about Lily and the fire.

I should probably mention that James is a woman at this point just to make that completely clear. It is not just a typo. James also has a super-secret lover who probably has more secrets than James does.

The first in the series, Forever Burn, follows James through her nightmares and her struggling relationship. Of course a few more things happen, but that would mean spoilers, so I’ll just shush now. The second book, Dying Embers, is actually a prequel to Forever Burn. Dying Embers focuses on the start of James’ relationship with her super-secret lover and how all that went down. It’s quite amusing and funny in certain places, but I’m a bit biased.

The third novel in the trilogy is called Ashes Fall (TBR Sept 1, 2014) and takes places eleven years after Forever Burn. I’ve just completed writing that one and am in the editing process. Ashes Fall focusses on James and her furthering relationship with Lily and said super-secret lover. I’m sure that if you read the first book, you’ll be wondering how this happens, so you’ll just have to read this

one too. Lily is struggling throughout this book with everything that has happened in her past, as is James. So the third book is far darker than the first one, and the tension is ramped up.

I know that I put James through so much that if she were real she might punch me, or hand me over to her super-secret lover’s ex-fiancé. (Yeah, wrap your mind around that one, I dare you.)

If there is one character from this trilogy you would really like people to meet, who would it be?

If I had to pick one character from this trilogy to meet, it would probably be Addison or Rob. I don’t know what it is about both of them, but they have a special place in my heart. Addison tends to keep a cool head in the sight of some serious tragedy and she trusts her gut, which is important. Rob, however, is the gayest straight man I have ever known. He can talk and talk and talk and

never shut up. I had originally only intended for him to be in a chapter or two of Forever Burn, but he ended up having quite a role in each novel.

Focusing more on Dying Embers, the second book and prequel of the trilogy, how long did it take you to write it and what inspired you?

I think this novel took me 13 days to write. I took a bunch of time (before I had two other part-time jobs) in November of 2012 and typed my little heart away. I’d had the idea for what I wanted to happen in this novel well before I wrote it, so as soon as I was able to sit down and type, it all came out.

The inspiration for this series mainly comes from my time of working security. I worked in tandem with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and Central Pierce Fire and Rescue. I saw them at least twice during one shift (more if it was a Friday or Saturday night). I wanted to represent a job that has changed drastically over the years, and one that is often misunderstood.

Firefighters are always heroes. I don’t think that I’ve ever encountered someone who thinks that they’re not (unlike cops who can have good and bad reputations). But firefighters rarely go to fires anymore unless they are working in a large enough city to have enough medical personnel. They are often required to train as paramedics or first responders while also being trained in firefighting. It’s just the reality of the situation, and this is represented in James herself.

The emergency responders that I worked with on a regular basis are the ones that inspired the characters behind this story and the situations that the characters go to. I do want to say, none of these characters are actually based on real people, just the situations and jobs themselves.

What is your writing process?

I write every day. Okay, well, I try to write every day. If I’m not writing; I’m editing. If I’m not editing; I’m writing. I might not be working on novels; I might be working on shorts, or papers if my instructors decide to have an assignment due. In the world of no classes and no school, I wake up in the morning and edit until noon or one. I always finish the piece or part I’m editing. Sometimes it is one piece, sometimes two. Sometimes my own work, and sometimes it’s for a friend. After editing, I write. I write for hours. When I want to get through a chapter or a certain part before bed, I’ll turn all electronics possible off. No twitter. No television. No Facebook.  I’ll turn my music up as loud as is appropriate (my playlist ranges from Ice-T to movie scores to gospel to country). I type as fast as possible. Editing can and will always happen later.

My motto is two-fold: I cannot edit what has not been written, and I cannot improve without continuing and practicing.

What is your non-writing life like?

My non-writing life? Is there such a thing? I read for classes. I write papers (wait, that’s writing). Crocheting to relax, piano when I’m angry, and singing when the moment strikes. I often am found at my favorite bar: The Gingerman. At least two times a week, I show up and have myself a wheat beer. I am an animal lover. I have three cats (Elliot, Seeley, and Rusty—Elliot is on loan to my mother), and I recently just adopted a dog with my significant other. We named her Caprica, and she’s a pitbull puppy.

Other than that I work a total of three part-time jobs. Luckily writing is one of those. I’m also a freelance copy-editor, so I take on at least one novel a month when school is in session. I’m a part-time minister, who loves my job. I’m also a full-time graduate student hopefully graduating in May. So I really don’t have a lot of that little thing called time.

Tell us a bit about the publishing and marketing process.

I will say that it’s been rough and it’s been amazing all at the same time. My publisher is a small press, independent publisher, meaning I don’t sell thousands of books in the first second of release. I love working with the company and the people that my publisher chooses because I do have a lot of say in what happens with my novel.

We generally decide on a book cover after I send in a full manuscript. So the cover process and the editing processes are going on at the same time. While all that is going on, I’m doing marketing for the book and planning out swag and the likes. Once everything has been edited and formatted, the cover is done and the book itself is being printed and sent to the sellers, I ramp up my marketing.

I do most of my marketing though my social media sucks. I’m only every going to claim that I am less than partially good at this marketing thing. I use twitter a lot and Facebook, but I also post a lot of excerpts and writing goods (grammar rules included) on my blog and website. I don’t know if there’s any vast success in this, but it seems to be working for the moment.

What about being published and the book industry in general has most surprised you?

Surprised me? My senior project in high school was on the publishing industry and the different kinds of publishing, so I wasn’t ever shocked by anything in regards to that.

I would probably have to say is the authority people give me solely for the fact that I have a book out. It’s like suddenly I became a real writer, not just one that piddles around in the dark of night with a computer. People want my advice, they want to hear how I did it, they want to replicate that—and I’m sitting here going, get your own story because mine’s not all that cool!

I do also think that a bit more of that authority comes because I do have a publisher to back me. While my publisher is small press and I can guarantee most people probably haven’t heard of the company or the other authors there, it still lends to that authority I was talking about. People ask me about query letters and sending their work into publishers and agents because they assume I’ve been through the same process and can share in the experience. That, however, is not necessarily true.

What are you working on now?

I’m currently working on a new series called Spirit of Grace. The first novel, For by Grace, will be released with Supposed Crimes, LLC in June of 2014. I’m in the process of writing the sequel to that book called Fallen from Grace. I’m also writing a book that is yet to be titled. This one has an almost two-hundred year old witch and a seventy-year old one-quarter vampire—they both tend to get in a lot of trouble. I’m also co-writing another novel (because I’m insane) that’s about werewolves in an entirely dystopian world.

I’m also editing about three novels (at least I think it’s three). Ashes Fall, the third and final in the James Matthews trilogy is being edited—it’ll be released September 1, 2014. I’m editing For by Grace which will be released June 1, 2014 (it has one more round

before it’s done!) I also co-wrote a novel this year that is coming out sometime next year. We’re in the process of editing that as well.

In the plans, I think I have two more novels in the Spirit of Grace series. An infinite number of novels with the witch and vampire serial. And I’m sure that my co-writer and I will continue our partnership. It’s just way too much fun not to!
