Book 3 –  The Darcy Walker Series

Synopsis

Sometimes life smacks you right in the kisser
with a whole lot of ohhhh craaaaap.

Just ask Darcy Walker.
100 Proof Stud picks up four months after No Brainer’s cliffhanger ending, and
Darcy discovers the aftermath pales in comparison to the crisis her heart is
in. All of a sudden it’s raining men, and this teenage heroine’s personal life
turns her inside out.

Before she can sort out her feelings, she chases a spray-painting vandal and
stumbles upon a case of identity theft right in her own backyard. Darcy jumps
into the fray headfirst to prove she can hang with the big boys.

But it’s not just to hang…nope, she’s chasing reward money.

Tapping her band of misfit brothers for help, she turns Valley upside down
trying to unearth the criminals. Problem is, the cloak and dagger goes
high-octane, and she raises the bar on “crazy” in the process.

Bullets ring out…dead bodies appear…and Darcy rubs shoulders with the ultimate
sociopath. In the midst of murder and mayhem, will she finally follow her heart
or build a fortress of lies around it? Will she even get the chance?

Excerpts:

I squeaked open the door to the adjacent
bedroom and was met with an empty twin bed. A rumpled white sheet draped the bed, no comforter. Pivoting around, I did a quick scan of the gray carpet, found nothing overly suspicious or weird, so moved onto the closet.

By that time, Vinnie nipped at my heels. “I’m getting a funny feeling, Dolce. We need to roll.”

My thoughts exactly. But when I opened the walk-in closet and stepped inside, no way in the world would I ever have been prepared for what I’d find. There’s an idiom about skeletons in your closet. Trouble was, the skeleton I’d discovered still had meat on it.

“Vinnie,” I whispered, “there’s a skeleton in the closet.”

Vinnie munched on his moon pie behind me; I heard the crinkle of the wrapper. “Ha-ha, Dolce. Is this some metaphorical test I’m supposed to decipher?”

“No, like a real skeleton that I think is a man.”

Vinnie took one step inside and dropped the f-bomb. Then added mommy-effer.

“Do you smell that?” I asked.

Vinnie’s inhale was audible. “Yeah, smells like O-positive to me.” Loosely rolled in a faded navy comforter were the remains of a man. He lay facedown with a small patch of flesh and short black hair still clinging to his head. This wasn’t the only dead body I’d encountered, and neither was the body of a man I’d found in a dumpster last spring. I, eh, well…I found a head…buried in the sand on vacation in Orlando. I had a habit of stumbling upon dead bodies and/or body parts. Something the majority of people could go a lifetime and not have happen once, I’d experienced one too many times to count. The smell wasn’t as bad as bodies that’d recently expired, but it smelled like death, nonetheless. Death has a peculiar smell you never forget. Covering my nose with my hand, I lifted the tip of my boot and kicked the blanket back, starting at the naked feet. Black boxers framed femurs that barely had any flesh left, and a plain white t-shirt adorned the crumpled torso. A vintage concert t-shirt from The Minstrel Cramps, a local all-girl band popular back in the day, lay beside the corpse’s head. A memory played in the back of my mind I immediately tried to erase.

A memory that’d haunted me since I was nine years old.

I had a decision to make. I could call the police, or I could dive onto the car. Without another thought, I dove spread eagle onto the hood, a whole lot of don’t-die-a-virgin giving me flight.

Inhaling deeply, I found my calm, realizing Vinnie and I needed to leave ASAP and phone the authorities. Those plans hit an iceberg because once I joined Vinnie in the front room, I heard a Pfffft. Then another. I was a little slow on the uptake but soon realized the Pfffft was the sound of something striking the couch. Yellowed batting exploded out of a bullet hole in a puff of white smoke.

Call me a genius, but I didn’t consider this good.

“Down!” Vinnie roared, launching himself toward me.

Unfortunately, my legs went moron and glued to the floor. For a moment, I had a flashback of running from a shooter last spring. They say lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place…evidently, it does. My legs felt like rubber, and the room went to a dizzying whirl. Tears welled in my eyes, but I commanded them to dry up. You couldn’t think rationally when you cried. Emotions ruled. I didn’t make the rule; someone else did. Problem was, my tear ducts didn’t comply. I boo-hoo’d like a little girl.

Vinnie heaved us both off the floor, pitching me his keys I caught in one hand. “Oh, God, Vinnie,” I breathed, adrenaline nearly slicing me in two. This was like a Scarface  shootout, only we didn’t have a gun.

Vinnie’s eyes glowed black and angry, but he took time to tenderly touch my cheek in an order. “Snap out of it, Dolce. Go. Out the back. I’ll follow.”

     I still couldn’t move.

When Vinnie whipped off his jacket to do God-knew-what, voices boomed outside as three more gunshots landed on the hardwood floor. The wood splintered into pieces, sawdust pooling like an ant mound. When a sixth shot hit near my feet, I lost my balance and cartwheeled across the floor, landing on my knees. Vinnie snatched me up and shoved me in front of him, clutching my back to his front, acting as a human shield. Praying vehemently he didn’t get struck in

the mayhem of gunfire, I still was worthless while he kicked out the window and tossed me onto the ground. I landed on all fours, my hands hitting the gravelly dirt of a backyard in need of upkeep. My tights split at the knees, and the air left my body on a hiss. I crawled in an uncoordinated manner like a baby intent on learning a new method of transportation. My eyes blinded with tears, and when I made it around the air conditioning unit, my hands hit something thick and mucousy. Pulling my shaking hand to my eyes, I recognized the red, viscous fluid immediately…blood. Blood that’d partly dried and led me to the body of…oh, God help me… help me.

Thirteen things you didn’t know about AJ Lape
AKA – Ada Miracle Lape

1. I can dislocate my left shoulder on command.

2. My favorite movie is It’s a Wonderful Life…cry like a baby when George Bailey starts yelling, “I want to live again…I want to live again.”

3. I hate clowns and chicken wings … not necessarily in that order.

4. I’m a notorious sleepwalker. It happens when I’m troubled. As far as I can tell, I always have my clothes on.

5. I had an academic scholarship. I know that’s shocking, but looking at homework today, I’m pretty sure I’m tapped out at fifth grade.

6. I like to shoot 9mm guns…look out Target World, every once in a while you have to walk your inner hillbilly.

7. I started running high school track when I was in the sixth grade. Don’t ask me to run now. After two kids, I pee my pants when I walk across the floor.

8. I’m like Rain Man when it comes to fractions.

9. I used to write and record songs. I won Honorable Mentions in the John Lennon Song Writing Contest and Music City Song Festival. Verrrry short career.

10. I’ve cliff-dived off a 40-foot cliff into a lake…wouldn’t recommend it ..that sucker can burn.

11. I’m the only human I know that got turned down twice when trying to adopt handicapped dogs. What the heck…those dogs would’ve loved me.

12. I would’ve been a police officer or journalist if life didn’t land me where I am.

13. I occasionally have the foul mouth of a truck driver … sorry, Mom and Dad. I try to change it. So far, the message hasn’t made it to the execution part of my brain.

Jacqs is a twenty-eight year old woman caught up in an on again, off again relationship with Bond, who is her best friend and the one who causes her the most heartache. She succumbs, yet again, to his powerful charisma, but vows not make it into more than it is, a great night of sex.

Bond, too sexy for his own good, wants Jacqs for himself as he “dates” his way through the female population of South Florida. He selfishly doesn’t see the conflict of interest.

Red, Bond’s best friend, has watched Bond take Jacqs for granted for way too long and soon stakes his own claim on her.

Will Red and Jacqs budding relationship pull apart their tight-knit group of friends and will Jacqs survive being Stuck In Between.

CHAPTER THREE
Stuck in Between – Chapter Three

Blakely Bennett grew up in Southeast Florida and has been residing in the great Northwest for over eight years. She graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a degree in psychology, which accounts for her particular interest in crafting the personalities, struggles, and motivations of her characters. She is an avid reader of many genres of fiction, but especially erotica and romance. Writing has always been her bliss. She is attracted to stories of self-struggle and ultimate recovery.

Blakely is married to a wonderful, loving and supportive husband, also a writer, who helps to keep her grounded. She is a mother, a communitarian, a lover of music (always on while she is writing—thank you, Pandora), and a good friend. An advocate of love and female empowerment, she is a facilitator for a women’s group. She loves to walk and hike for exercise and finds that, since moving to Seattle, WA, she is now one of those “crazy” people who walk in the rain.
Stuck In Between (erotic romance) is her 5th novel. She is also the author of the dark erotic suspense, My Body Trilogy (My Body-His, My Body-His (Marcello) & My Body-Mine) and co-authored the contemporary romance, The Demarcation of Jack with her husband, Dana Bennett.

One woman, two men, hmm…
Which one will she choose? One, both, or neither?
Not your Normal Romance Read.
I read this novel as a participating blog of this Release Blitz. Stuck In Between is my first, Blakely Bennett novel. After reading this first novel in the, Bound by Your Love Series, I wonder what will be coming next in this series? For this novel included a lot of very interesting characters and very strong friendships.
Ratings
3.5 book review
3.5 Roses of Writing Raves
The story line leaves the reader wondering how the story will end and which character(s) will be featured as this series continues. The characters themselves are bold, individualistic, and vary in background stories. What brings this interesting group all together? Family, Friendship, and Love. All three of these factors play major roles in the novel.
My favorites about the novel: 1) Heroine is twenty-eight years old, Heroes that are thirty years old. 2) Strong Friendships, and 3) How music factors into each chapter.
Each chapter provides the reader just a little more detail about the various individual characters. Just enough to keep interested in he story line and how their past factors into the series as it grows.
Love. Only four letters. Yet, four letters that can bring either great happiness or great sadness. Everyone wants to be loved. However, love and trust go hand in hand. There can not be one without the other.
Which will the heroes and heroine find at the end of this story?
Overall story line and plot was very creative. Enjoyed the fact that the heroine drove a VW Bug (this reviewers all time favorite car and hopes to have her own someday). And that the novel was set in Florida. This reviewer have not been this far into Florida before, but none the less has Happy memories of the various cities in said state.
Novel contained a few grammar issues, but nothing to major. They could easily be figured out. Readers should be able the follow the time-line of the story. Though there were a few times this reviewer became confused. Once was with the color of the jacket mentioned between Bond and Jacqueline during an outing. A second was during a pool scene and I was like, how did the heroine get dressed so fast. As mentioned above, this reviewer really liked how the author wove music into each chapter. With that being sad, the only downside for this reviewer was that the love triangle between the two heroes and the heroine went on and on. Got to wondering if they were ever going to make a decision, work it all out.  There are three specific days of the week that certain plans are made between various friends. Both heroes have secrets that they keep from the heroine. Do they reveal them all in this first novel in the series, or are there more to come.  that The characters are actually working at everyday jobs and many scenes take place at the heroines job. One scene takes place at a restaurant with swinging booths. This reviewer plans to look this place up or contact author to see if it is a real place. It sounds so wonderful.
tear book review image
1 Tear Drop
As an emotional reader this reviewer did cry once or twice. It was mainly in scenes containing Jacqueline and Bond. I could feel the hurt, confusion, and frustration that Jacqueline had about Bond. In time the reader will come across what makes him act as he does. But even with that being said, if this review had to choose either or, I believe I would be …Team Red!
5.0 Romance Raves
Oh My!! From beginning to end this novel was a rockin’!!! Each hero has his own little ‘bag’ of tricks. And my oh my!!! Let me just say, you might find a trick or two you might want to try!!! The love scenes are the real reason I kept reading this book. They are HOT! HOT! HOT!

Synopsis

In the season of hope, in the season of giving…

How far would you go for your friend?

Alissa Thompson has been the good girl her whole life. Her uninterested parents don’t understand her hopes and dreams. But this Christmas when her steadfast childhood friend Charlie needs her more than ever, she can’t back down. Crossing the line means being braver than she has ever been in her life. It means changing and growing and taking a stand.

Dakota Gray was brave in the face of debilitating fear. But he lost himself in that blood soaked day and has shunned everything he once knew. Now shattered and broken, he hides out in isolation, his wounds beyond healing. His heart closed, his emotions buried, he’s a man on the edge of self-destructing. Little does he know that courage would be found in another searching for the strength to be brave.

Now snowbound in the Colorado Rockies one week before Christmas, Alissa thought this was about her journey and her friend, about setting him free. But from the moment she meets Dakota, she learns about what real bravery is all about. What real love is all about. But is the season enough, her courage enough, her love enough to heal this hero’s brave heart and in the end set herself free?

EXCERPT

Dakota

I was vibrating with the memory of her skin against mine. The sounds of her distress had triggered another flashback. It wasn’t her fault. She hadn’t meant to do it. But after four months of successfully keeping the flashbacks at bay, I’d had two in her presence in less than an hour. She’d only been worried about her own burden. I didn’t know what it was, but I recognized the sadness in her eyes. The loss of something precious.

But it was her scent that had brought me back, the glorious feel of her arms around me. None of this made sense, though. I barely knew her, but it was as if our hearts knew each other. I didn’t normally go in for that kind of crap, but it was true.

I closed my eyes thinking about how close her lips had been to mine. It had been such a long time since anyone had touched me. It had felt so good, so f**king great, but I couldn’t allow myself to get used to it. I’d come here for the isolation, to suffer alone with my failures and pain. No one was allowed to help me. I couldn’t bear it, no longer had the courage to try.

Seeking calm, I focused on getting Alissa’s dishes washed. I knew I had to touch her again and I didn’t want to. But she was injured. She couldn’t walk with her sprained ankle. She probably thought I didn’t want to touch her, but that wasn’t the real truth. I did want to touch her. I ached to. But once the snow stopped and she did what she came to do, she’d be gone. I’d be alone again. That didn’t hold as much appeal as it had only a few hours ago.

I bent down and slipped my arms around her, gritting my teeth as my senses stretched open painfully, like muscles that hadn’t been flexed in a long time. My whole being cried out for the comfort, for the simple human contact. I went down the hall adjacent to the kitchen to the spare room next to mine. I wanted her close, in case she needed me.

You can buy this book or any of the 12 NA’s of Christmas titles on Amazon.

“Let me call a cab quick,” Tyler said, reaching for his pocket.

I gently touched his arm and said, “It’s not too cold, let’s walk.  My place isn’t that far away.”

He looked me up and down and raised an eyebrow.  “Are you sure?  I don’t want to have to carry you half way,” he teased.

“Ha ha ha, I will be fine, and…I’m not wearing heels,” I snickered, lifting my foot and wiggling my toes as though if could see them.

He tried to hide his amusement.  “Okay, if you say so.”

We slowly walked downtown amongst the young crowds of clubbers.  I snaked my arm threw his and leaned my head on his shoulder as we walked.  He flinched at first, but then relaxed into me.

We stopped in the park along the railing, just as we had the first night we went to the coffee shop.  I leaned into him, hoping he would wrap his arms around me.  I felt so comfortable and confident with alcohol running through me.  He shook his head and chuckled.  Sliding his fingers up and down my arms he said, “You’re funny when you are drunk.”

I pulled my head back and looked up at him.  “I am so not drunk yet,” I said seriously at first then let out a little giggle.  He smiled down at me, our faces nearly inches from each other’s.  His expression became serious, and his hands slowed running up and down my arms, stopping on my forearms.  I never wanted someone to kiss me so badly.  I leaned up and closed my eyes, hoping he would get the picture.  I felt his nose touch mine then his mouth was on mine.  My lips were no longer tingling from the alcohol but tingling from the sensation of his lips working against mine.  I allowed his tongue access to my mouth as a slow low groan escaped him.  It was like he flicked a switch inside of me with his tongue.  I brought my arms up to his head and ran my fingers through his hair.  Our bodies flushed together, I noticed his arms were still at his sides.  Why wasn’t he touching me?

He slowed down the kiss and gently pulled away, keeping his forehead on mine.  I was still breathing heavy.

“I need to get you home,” his voice was raspy, with ulterior meaning.  I slowly opened my eyes and turned to start walking.  He took my hand and squeezed it, causing me to pick up my pace.  He wanted to be alone with me just as badly.  I could feel it in his kiss.
