The Fallen

Dark Fantasy

SYNOPSIS:

Armageddon has come. Angels and demons have erupted onto Earth’s surface, battling for domination. Alisha Grace witnesses this battle, and she, like so many others, expects the angels to win. It soon becomes apparent, however, that the demon forces have powers beyond belief as Gabriel’s angelic forces lose Armageddon.

Rai is a fallen angel, leading the fight with his demon allies. Commander Krillion and Captain Zara are leaders in the Seraphim force, and although their armies have lost to Lucifer’s demonic legions, they will not give up. But there is much more to this endgame battle than meets the eye. Even demons have history, and Rai will soon discover on which side he truly belongs.

In the meantime, Israfil, the angel of judgement day, receives a new vision. As hell covers the Earth in its dark genesis, Israfil senses the building of a new team that will fight the evil ones. A demon, a girl from Earth, warriors of the Seraphim and a being brought forth from Purgatory will fight on the same side-and only time will tell if they will be victorious, or if hope will be lost and darkness will rule the world for all eternity.

brick synopsisHope and Cameron made a five-year promise before college. Years pass and they never see each other again. But then one month before his planned wedding to Riley, Cameron looks outside and sees Hope in the pouring rain, watching him. Now, three years later, Cam has one day – a sick day on this last Friday of summer – to convince the one woman whose very existence breaths life into his lungs, that sometimes love like theirs actually does exist, and it’s that kind of love that lives forever, no matter how hard you fight to forget about it and move on. From the author of non friction and Hope, Sick Day follows one man’s day-long attempt to persuade the love of his life that sometimes it’s okay to break promises if it means keeping the ones that count.

5 – Roses – Romantic Love Story – Creative Unique Writing

I’m sure we have all had days where we want to play hooky, our physical beings are unable to go on, or maybe our emotional psyche is just in ruins.  In this creative story we find sometimes love is the common denominator that filters into a blood stream and takes control of emotional and physical functions.  Sometimes one cannot sleep, the mind continues to dredge up memories of past encounters.  One cannot eat for our bodies are full of emotional turmoil and yet somewhat empty for want of more… what could have been… what could be…

5 – Hearts – Devoted Couples – Love

Cameron is engaged to married, he has a unfulfilling job, he is lost, confused and desperate to fill a void he is missing in life.  Years ago he chose to walk away from a promise he once gave to his college love, his one true love, the one that got away, the woman he chose to let go and walk away from.  Desperate to find this missing piece of his life he decides to take drastic measures and take a Sick Day from work to conquer a heart worth living for.

~Cameron:  “I can’t have two halves of one life.  One that belongs exclusively to you, and the other that belongs to the hope of replacing you.  I can’t… exist without you.”

Hope McManus thinks she is stable enough in life where she came move on and settle down with someone she might be able to settle for.  She finds she must have Closure from her past with the only man she ever loved in order to end this unsettled feeling.

~Hope:  “I came here to find you, Cameron, but if you don’t tell me why you disappeared, you’ll never see me again.  I can’t keep beating myself up over this.”

3 Tears – Emotional Drama

The emotional drama the author weaves in this romantic tale of woe and passion is enough to have hearts pumping and nerves are forever frayed.  The author writes in detail about how the thoughts and feelings of each character are portrayed, the scenery around them is described almost as if you were there… in the park, at a candlelight dinner, on a beautiful yacht and falling in love all over again.

3 – Lips –  Hungry Love-Making

The spice we find in between the sheets in this romantic love story is exactly what we would want to explore when two people come together and share their souls.  The turmoil was evident when their touches consumed them, their past collided when their lips savored each others and their bodies connected when their desires took control.

My middle finger massaged her clit before reaching even farther south and dipping into her, just a shallow taste on my fingertip.

We kissed hard, lost in the thrusts, my hands gripping hers so fiercely that my fingers went numb.

Watching her, feeling her come against me.. it spelled my end as well.

2

Will this long ago promise survive the test of time.  Will these long ago lovers reconnect.  Will love last.  Let’s find out in this drama filled romantic tale of passion, woe and LOVE reunited.

Thank you Morgan Parker!

Synopsis:

One scar.One betrayal.

No escape.

When Sloan Reynolds beats criminal charges,
Melissa Jones stops believing her wealthy, connected ex-husband will ever pay
for what he did to her.
Derek Alexander can’t accept that—a tiny silver
scar won’t let him forget, and as a leader in the security business, he is
determined to get the man who hurt his fiancée.

Then the body of a former call girl turns up
dead. She’s the breakthrough Derek’s been waiting for, the link to Sloan’s
sordid past he needs. But as usual, legal paths to justice have been covered up
or erased.

Derek’s ready to do whatever it takes to protect
his family when his partner Patrick Knight devises a plan that changes
everything.

It’s a plan that involves coloring outside the
lines and taking a walk on the dark side. It goes against everything on which
Alexander-Knight, LLC, is based.

And it’s a plan Derek’s more than ready to
follow.

Excerpt:

“What have you done?”
His voice is full of warmth as he watches me from the sofa.
“Since you’ve been
working too hard—”
“Exaggeration.”
“Since you’ve been
working too hard,” I repeat, “I decided to recreate our relaxing spa vacation
in the desert.”
Placing the tray on
the coffee table, I hand him his flute and lift mine. “To family restrooms.”
He laughs and clinks
back. “To the gorgeous woman who drives me to crazy extremes.”
We sip and I crawl
forward on the couch to kiss him and tell him again. “I love you.”
He leans forward,
placing his flute, the tray, my flute, all of it on the coffee table. Then his
hands move through the open robe to pull me onto his lap in a straddle, facing
him. Just that fast, his mouth is on my neck, nibbling and kissing. My eyes are
closed, and I’m powerless.
“I love you more,” he
says beside my ear with a deep inhale. “You smell so good.”
Threading my fingers
in his hair, I kiss his temple. “I wore the red lace…”
A rumble of approval,
and his lips touch that spot behind my ear, a light scruff against my skin,
sending shivers flying down my legs.
“My favorite.” His
voice is thick as I pull his cheeks, reuniting our mouths.
For a moment, we make
out like teenagers, hot and breathless, tongues entwining. He holds me against
his bare chest, my elbows are bent, and my palms are on his cheeks. His mouth
is like some rich, decadent chocolate I can never get enough of tasting. As we
kiss, I feel him relax, and my hands slide behind his neck, my lips travel up
to his brow. He hugs me against his torso and doesn’t move. Neither do I.
This big, strong man
saved me twice. If comfort is what he needs, I’m here to give it to him. I’m
here to give him anything. After a few more breaths, his arms relax. I lean
back and study his face a moment. The robe has dropped around my shoulders, so
I’m basically sitting nude on his lap, but I don’t care.
“Hungry?” I reach for
the sandwich plate and hold it between us, right at our chins. “You probably
won’t think it’s as good as Central Grocery, but I think it’s delicious.”
His blue eyes take me
in before he bites. “Mmm…” is all I get.
Giggling, I lean
forward and take a bite myself. The tangy, savory flavor of olives and smoky
provolone fills my mouth.
“Delicious!” My voice
is muffled.
His smile glows as he
watches me, his voice full of love. “How’s the baby?”
Lowering the sandwich
to the plate, I turn and put it on the side table again. “I can’t feel a thing,
but the doctor said he’s doing great.”
My last checkup was a
week ago, and we both agreed unless something unusual occurred, Derek could
miss the routine exams. So far everything has been by the book.
“So he’s a boy now?”
I love his grin at the prospect of a little son.
Shrugging, I
acquiesce. “Maybe… it’s too soon to know.”
His attention moves
from my face to my abdomen. Large hands span my bare stomach before he leans
forward and kisses me right below my sternum, right at the top of my belly.
“I love you,” he
whispers to the little bean growing there.
I’m certain my heart
melts in that instant, and I catch his face again to cover it with kisses. He’s
right with me, lifting me in his arms and carrying me to the master suite. A
California king-sized bed fills the space, and he spreads me out on the soft
mattress, lying on his side next to me.
I trail my fingers
lightly over his brow, to his temple, following a line to his strong jaw. He
looks at me like I’m the most fragile thing in his bed—another detail he knows
isn’t true.
We don’t disturb the
moment, though. The truth might be that both of us are strong as iron, tough as
flint, but holding each other, we know how precious it is that we’re here,
together.
The randomness of
chance keeps us both in awe, and for that, we treasure these moments. After
working so hard, our reunions are the sweetest bliss. He holds me, and I feel
very needed and extremely sexy. This man is like water in the desert to me, and
it isn’t hard to see the feeling is mutual.
“I’m sorry I
interrupted dinner.” Leaning forward, he nibbles the skin at my neck, and a
surge rises between my legs. “Can you wait?”
My voice is thick as
I answer. “I guess so…”

  Their First Meeting

The pretty, young host escorts me to a table for two near a window with panoramic water vistas. Within minutes, a server takes my order. As my café latté arrives, I can’t help but overhear a rude exchange between a man and his leggy blonde with the host that escorted me to my seat.

“Look, I reserved that exact seat yesterday,” he says.

“I apologize sir, but that seat is not available,” the host replies.

“Well, if you were doing your job in the first place, it would be available to me, wouldn’t it?”

“Sir, I’m sorry for the error, but it wasn’t written here. If you like, you can wait at the bar where I’ll be happy to serve you a complimentary beverage of your choice while you wait, or I can accommodate you at an available table now.”

I can’t help but look to see who this asshole is.

Everything about him smells of money. From the designer jeans that hug his ass, all the way to the Jaeger Reverso watch that graces his wrist. He’s hot—probably in his mid to late thirties, tall, broad shoulders, piercing grey eyes, and a head of black hair like I’ve never seen.

Ordinarily, I might have found him attractive, if only he would just shut up.

Everything he says to that poor young girl, who has tried so hard to rectify someone else’s mistake, pisses me off. He’s been nothing but rude and condescending. As I look up, my eyes land straight on his. Then I realize they’re all looking my way. I turn around to look behind me, but there is no one. Then it dawns on me that he’s arguing with the host about my seat.

My meal arrives. I mind my business, and I proceed to enjoy it. Before I know it, I see him approaching my table. I pretend not to notice and focus all my attention on my lemon ricotta pancakes before me, but within seconds, he stands beside me.

“Excuse me, my name is Jonathan Kole. Would you mind terribly if you were seated elsewhere?”

My eyes travel across my pancakes to his broad thighs, to his crotch, and to what I suspect is an extremely trimmed stomach beyond his black ribbed sweater. Then I stare into his grey eyes in silence.

“You see, my girlfriend and I met right here at this table a year ago, and I wanted to propose to her.

Here. Today.”

“Actually, Jonathan, I do mind. Seeing that I’m enjoying my meal, surely you wouldn’t mind waiting until I’m done. Or perhaps you can let that polite host, who has done everything possible to accommodate you, have you seated elsewhere.”

“Do you have any idea who I am?” he asks.

Asshole! Your name might sound familiar but who cares…

“No. You could be the king of England and I wouldn’t give a damn.”

“Who the hell do you think you are?”

“You really want to know?” I ask quietly.

He lowers his head slightly, as if he’s seriously interested.

“I am a woman who walked in on her fiancé screwing her best friend one week before her wedding, so forgive me if I’m not in a sentimental mood.”

His mouth drops open at my response.

“Now, if you’ll excuse me, Mr. Kole, I’d really like to enjoy my brunch.”

His piercing grey eyes are glaring into mine. I know he’s angry. His temple pulsates as he stares at me. He walks away completely flushed.

I don’t care. Perhaps if he had been nicer to that host I would have considered his request. However, because he comes from money doesn’t give him the right to speak to people any which way he wishes.

I continue to enjoy my meal and notice him walking hand in hand to the bar with Malibu Barbie. Half an hour later, I ask for the check then purposely make him wait an additional five minutes before I leave.

On the way out, the host looks at me bright-eyed. “No one ever speaks to Mr. Kole that way, Miss McLean.”

“Well, it’s time someone taught him some manners,” I reply. I hand her a healthy tip, and I’m on my way.

Isabella Delvino is not your typical author. Although she spent her childhood outdoors and not with her nose in a book, she was always creating stories in her head. Her first ‘publishing success’ was winning a monthly writing contest for BOP magazine at the age of fifteen. It was a very short paragraph (about a certain boy band) but she won. No, she hasn’t been writing ever since but hey, better late than never. Isabella graduated from The University of Southern California and has been a career Stay-At-Home mom for many years. She lives with her husband, two kids and three dogs in a suburb of Los Angeles. She’s usually reading, watching the latest on Netflix or in the drive-thru line at Starbucks.

“I’m right here.” He reached out his hand. At the same time I grabbed his hand, a loud rumble of thunder roared through the old building making everything in my body tense. I screamed like a little girl and all but jumped into Jason’s arms.

“You’re okay. I’ve got you,” he whispered into my ear as I clung onto him. His hands slid down my back to my waist, soothing me from the thunder’s jolt.

The candle in the aisle next to us did little to break the darkness that surrounded us, but I could clearly see his eyes. I would always be able to see those eyes. They pierced mine as my hands leisurely moved up his chest and around his neck. He slowly took a step closer, moving us so that my back was now against the bookshelf. His hands left my waist to rest on the shelf behind me. My chest was rising and falling as quickly as his was, and it was as though our bodies were in sync. I could tell we both were feeling everything. Every butterfly that fluttered in our stomachs, every breath exhaled and inhaled, and every bit of self-control lost the longer our bodies held this position.

I couldn’t help but lick my lips. I wanted his on mine badly, they needed the taste of Jason on them again. It was as if the storm now raged inside of us, ready to be unleashed. Another loud roar of thunder around us, and then, there it was. A growl escaped Jason as I bowed my back to take a tighter hold of him. His eyes watched as my teeth captured my bottom lip, and his lips immediately found mine. For a split second, a crash of lightning appeared, lighting up the row around us. Our tongues immediately intertwined, kissing frantically as though it was our first kiss.

I slid my hands from around his neck, and up his arms, until I reached his hands, placing mine inside his. He gripped them tightly as he pulled his lips from mine and began softly placing kisses down my neck into the curve of my shoulder. I let out a soft moan, loving the feel of his wet lips against my skin. His grip tightened as his body pressed harder against mine, and his teeth bit down softly on my ear. I wanted to melt into a puddle right here on the floor. Turning my head toward him, my lips were ready to taste more of him. I kissed him and then like something fierce had stricken inside me, I bit his bottom lip. His answering growl made every pulse in my body race. I trailed my lips down his neck but enjoyed the feel of his scruff against my soft cheek first. When I got to his neck, he moved back slightly. With my hands still gripped tightly in his, I was stuck, unable to continue kissing his neck.

“This isn’t funny,” I said, my voice husky.

He leaned closer, his hold still firm on my hands. “Cassandra, I don’t know if I’ll have the ability to stop, so I have to keep your hands locked in mine where they’re safe.”

I slowly shook my head. “I don’t want to beg for this. I have never wanted anything more in my life. I’m giving this to you, and I want you to take it and never give it back. I want you, Jason.”

JASE

“I gotta go. I promised Kasey a dance,” Moose said before running off like he was up to something.

I shook my head and took another sip of water.

“Hey there. This seat taken?”

I didn’t even have to look at her to know who the voice belonged to. The sweet sound made everything inside of me melt. “For a girl like you? It’s never taken,” I told her as I finally realized what Moose was up to.

She smiled back, but this time, she didn’t take her eyes off of me. I knew the feeling all too well. I didn’t ever want to stop staring at her. She looked away and began fidgeting with her glass. The contents were clear and only confirmed what I thought I knew.

“What are you thinking about over there Cassie?” She swiveled her stool in my direction and I couldn’t help but watch her cheeks flush. It was the perfect shade of red on her. Jase, get a grip man.

“Nothing,” she replied.

The look in her eyes said otherwise. “I can tell you’re lying.”

“Fine, you seem sad, Jase,” she said.

How could she tell? How did she know? Was I not hiding my feelings or past good enough? I gazed down at the floor as I held my glass tight in my hands.

“You can talk to me,” she said, placing her hand on my knee. My skin blazed with heat under her touch. It was all I could do to keep from screaming out to her what was wrong. She had too much going on in her life to have to deal with my problems too. I was stuck. I couldn’t tell her the truth. She wouldn’t accept it and then it would just be heartbreak. At least at this point, we weren’t anything but friends. I wanted more. I couldn’t deny that part of my heart that was internally punching me for not making a move already. It wouldn’t be fair to her though.

A sudden coldness lingered over my knee. Her hand was back up on the bar. I missed her touch. I needed to touch her. We had to dance.

I hopped off the bar stool and stood behind her gorgeously dressed body. It was all I could do not to put my lips on her bare shoulder as I inched my mouth closer to her ear.

“You can talk to me too you know,” I whispered.

I moved her stool around so she was now in between my legs. “Let’s dance pretty girl,” I said.

A smile tugged on her lips. Her hand was still in mine as I started to walk away, except she didn’t budge.

I looked back; her eyes were double their normal size. “There’s a slight problem,” she said, quietly.

I moved in closer, put my hands on her knees, and leaned my ear by her mouth. She smelled so good. Jase, man you have got to stop. Focus.

“I don’t know how to dance country,” she confessed.

What? I moved back and started laughing, uncontrollably. That was what her problem was? It was adorable and innocent and in turn, only made my feelings for her that much stronger. Why couldn’t it have been that she had to go the restroom or something awkward like that?

The flesh of her palm suddenly covered my mouth and instantly stopped my laugh. My stomach knotted. It took all of the control I had in me not to press a kiss to the inside of her hand that so roughly covered my lips.

“Stop laughing, this is serious,” she said. Yes, it is serious; seriously cute.

I reluctantly took her hand off my mouth. “I’ll lead, you just follow. You’ll be okay. Just go with it, Cassie,” I told her. This time I made sure she came with me as I pulled her off the chair similar to a parent helping a child off.

The song that played through the speakers was perfect. I didn’t even plan it, but it worked out to my benefit. I really hoped she recognized it, but I wasn’t positive she would. I didn’t know if she was feeling the same pull I was and if our moment in the street was one that would stay with her, like it did me.

I took her hand in mine and placed her other behind my back. I pressed our bodies together as I wrapped my other hand around her lower back. I made sure there was no space between us, not even room to breathe. The song had me wanting her badly, and getting her as close as possible was all I could think about.

“Don’t be scared, just like we practiced in the street,” I said. Her eyes gazed into mine as if they were seeing them for the first time.

My mission at first was to get her to let loose and have fun tonight, but now, all I wanted to do was recreate the moment in the street. This was far surpassing that though.

I took control and did as I told her I would. I led and swayed us, keeping it smooth and slow, just like the song. Our eyes hadn’t stopped staring into one another since we stepped onto the dance floor, and every ounce of me wanted our skin to touch. The music kept us moving as I slowly rested my check against hers. The heat of her skin immediately radiated onto mine. It traveled down to my torso and only continued further. This girl had me flushed from head to toe. Her body suddenly relaxed into mine as my hand held onto her. It was that moment that I knew I had her; I had all of her, mind and body. And it was then that my voice box let loose and started humming along with the song.

Her body tensed in my arms and a second later her warm soft cheek slid away from me. Her eyes peered into mine as she searched them. I continued to hum as the wheels in her head seemed to turn. I know you know this song, Sweetheart. Come on. I know you do.

“This is the song you were humming in the street isn’t it?” she asked, her lips smirking.

God yes. She knew it. It came to her.

My lips grew into a smile that was larger than life. I pressed our bodies back together and finally without having her eyes to distract me, I moved my lips by her ear.

“It’s called Wanted by Hunter Hayes,” I whispered gently.

Feeling her body mold next to me as I held her, I thought to myself how nothing could ever explain how badly I wanted this girl.

Her hands moved and delicately cupped behind my neck. Feeling her latch onto me was enough to make my brain fog over and my knees want to collapse. I did everything I could to contain myself as I locked both of my hands behind her back. We were a chain link; nothing could break us apart now. Our cheeks were no longer side by side, as our eyes were now peering softly into each other. Her eyes. Those damn eyes could kill a man. The soft hazel color could get you lost if you stared into them long enough. They swirled green and brown and became lighter the happier she was. They were like a drug as they caught your attention and didn’t let go. They pulled me in and I’d be lying if I said I tried to stop it. Her whole face was drawing me in like a gravitational pull. Those eyes, those flushed red cheeks, and those pink lips. They took me in and pulled me so close I could feel her warm breath hitting my lips. We weren’t inches apart or even centimeters. We were mere millimeters, a breath and one second apart.

As the song winded down my heartbeat only grew louder. It was the only thing my ears were hearing. Boom. Boom. Boom. It accelerated faster as I moved and passed our millimeter mark. One last breath and one more second my lips would be on hers. The rights, the wrongs, and every reason why I shouldn’t kiss this phenomenal girl in front of me silenced as my breath hitched and now we were only one second from kissing.

Her eyes seared into me, her body was snug against mine and her lips were within reach. They were almost grazing, and then it happened. We stopped moving toward each other and gravity now yanked us apart. The song changed, the mood altered, and the crowd around us went chaotic. Our moment was gone, vanished. Only one second away from our lips connecting and one second was all it took to steal it away.

Was it a sign? I knew I was playing with fire, but maybe it was bigger than a matchstick flame and more like a bonfire. I almost kissed this fantastic girl. What was I thinking? I couldn’t have her. She wasn’t mine to take. She would kill me if she knew the secret I was withholding from her while I stood there, trying to kiss her and make her mine. I was more than sure this was a sign and I was even more positive it was needed.

“My turn next,” Moose shouted as he grabbed her hand. The very one that was just around my neck.

The stinging pain behind my eyes threatened as I watched her face. It had lost its luster as we both stared. Was she thinking the same thing as I was? Were the wheels turning in her mind about the coincidence of the moment we lost? The first moment I reluctantly stopped and then this one that was cut short for us? I tried to smile for her but I’d be lying if I said it was easy.

Kasey grabbed my hand and led me off in another direction, far away from the only person I wanted to be next to. I lost sight of Cassie as we got closer to the edge of the dance floor, away from the crowd. We were dancing, but it was weak and the allure of having fun on a dance floor vanished the minute my hands left Cassie.

The look in Kasey’s eyes snapped me out of my thoughts. “Why are you looking at me like that?” I asked.

“What was all that about?”

I popped a brow and looked at her like I didn’t have a clue what she was asking.

“With Cassandra. Stop playing dumb. I know you better than you think.”

I felt the tension in my shoulders relax as I let out a breath. She knew me well. Too well. Growing up together didn’t help the fact that she already knew the things going on in my life and the blank emotions I wore on my face to hide my feelings.

“I don’t know what to do Kasey.”

A smile surfaced on her face like she knew something. “Make a move you pansy ass. She likes you. A whole helluva lot. I had to get the scoop out of her too.”

“What did she tell you?” I asked her, sounding way too eager for a guy that’s twenty two.

“I’ve already told you enough. She likes you, you like her. Make your move already.”

“I don’t think it’s a go-.” She hovered her hand over my mouth and stopped what she knew was going to come out of it; the reasons why I should not make a move.

“Just go with it Jason. I see the way you look at her. Even when you brought her over for dinner at Maggie’s,” she said as her eyes went soft. “What is it you always say? Let the-the-“

Damn her and her smarts. “Chips fall where they may,” I reminded her.

“That’s it. Let them fall where they may. Make a move and let the rest work itself out.”

“We’ll see. I can’t promise anything, but I appreciate the subtle nudge.” I laughed.

“You deserve to be happy too, Jason,” she said. Her eyes went from determined to soft as she gave me a knowing smile.

She was right. I needed to follow my own damn advice. Tonight I’d let the chips fall and not look back.

Excerpt:

“This way,” Nathaniel says from the side of the stage. We’re like cows being herded into individual pens to await sacrifice. There are closed-in cubicles constructed backstage, and each of us is placed in one without a word of guidance or encouragement.

“Wait a second,” I say as I try to scan down the row one last time for Katie, but I’m shoved into my cubicle and the door shuts, enclosing me in between four confining walls with only the light of a lamp. I drag my hands down the fabric of the walls until I fall down into my seat. I tug on my braid again and again and again. Calm down. Breathe. Calm down. I chant this over and over again, imagining that Katie’s the one who’s coaching me. I shut my eyes and am back in her room. The scent of her perfume overwhelms the small space, but instead of making me sneeze, it comforts me. It makes my imagined state more real.

I hear loud clapping coming from off the stage and know someone must’ve just gone. They obviously weren’t a Defect. No one wants a Defect at their ceremony. A voice shouts, “Let’s go, Todd Jenson. It’s time to meet your partner.” I wonder if it was Katie on stage. I wonder if he’s her partner. I wonder this through eighteen more times worth of clapping and cheering and name calling. Anytime now, they’ll open my door and force me to stand before the crowd, force me to touch the quartz, force me to face my peers in shame. If they deem me a Defect, I’ll be the first this Culling, and most likely the only.

I twist my hands into knots and think about my parents. They have to be out there by now. I’m going to walk out there and they’re going to be in the front row smiling. I open my eyes. Four walls. They’re closing in on me. They’re suffocating me. I have to get out.

“Faye Middleton?” The door opens and air rushes in. I draw sharply on it as the cheering continues. Another novice and her new partner walk off stage. It’s the girl with black hair. She’s coyly looking at him from under her lashes. He looks pissed.

Nathaniel guides me forward, and I want to yank my arm from him. I want to tell him I left my courage back in that cubicle, but I don’t. I can’t. My lips are glued shut by fear. My knees have turned into two extremities of doubt, and I know I’m going to fall. I’m going to forget how to speak.

Steel blue eyes find mine from across the stage. Elder Maddock. He bows ever so slightly in my direction, his eyes seeking past my outer appearance. I wonder if he knows who I am. He has to. I stop right before him and feel like a bird trapped in a cage. I can’t escape the thousands of eyes studying me. I can’t escape the hundreds of assumptions building me into something I’m not.

“Faye Middleton,” he says, his voice eager and curious. There’s a friendly lightness in his voice I don’t expect, a sound that makes me feel safe and comfortable under his gaze. He has thick, golden brown hair combed neatly over to the side and back, showing off the squared planes of his face. He looks much younger than he should, but older than my father. “Are you ready to begin?”

I turn to the crowd and scan desperately for my parents. Eyes. There are so many eyes. Too many. They form together, creating an awful monster that wants to swallow me whole. I can’t find them. The eyes have hidden them from me. I’m all alone. I try to swallow, but my mouth is so dry. I bite the inside of my cheek, curbing the need to release tears.

The Witch standing next to him says, “Faye, he asked you a question.”

I take in a tight breath and force myself to look away and back at Maddock. “I’m sorry,” I whisper, my stomach twisting a little tighter.

He pretends not to notice the panic I’m sure my face is masked in and offers me the kindest, most patient smile. “Everyone is nervous on the day of the Culling,” he says knowingly. “I was a wreck the day of mine.”

Polite laughter comes from the audience, and I feel myself relax just enough so that I can breathe again.

He offers me a small wink…a knowing sort of wink, and says, “Your parents will be proud.” He says these words carefully, evenly, and I know he’s trying to tell me something. They’re okay? He’s aware of who I am. “So are you ready to begin?”

Excerpt one:

“Do I get to see what’s under your robe?” He grinned wickedly as he reached for the belt.

She giggled and turned away. “Not yet! I have to finish my wine first. You should have thought of that before you poured me a glass,” she said laughing wickedly at the look on his face.

Martin groaned and dropped his head back on the couch, but then he got an ornery look on his face. He sat up and guzzled the last of his wine. He took her glass from her and tipped back the remainder of hers, too, sounding a refreshed “ahh” through his smile.

“Hey!” she said, laughing with him.

“Ok. Wine’s not an issue,” he grinned at her. “Show me.”

Still laughing a bit, she stood up and walked across the room from him. He stayed in his spot on the couch and waited for her to drop the robe. Like the seductress that she was, she stood there for a long moment, her makeup subtle-sexy and her beautiful auburn hair in a messy, wavy up-sweep.

She did nothing but look at him with heated eyes. She too-slowly reached for the belt and then stopped. She toyed with the ends of the terry-cloth rope that held the fabric closed around her.

“You know you’re killing me over here, right?” he asked, loving her playful side.

“Well, we can’t have that,” she said, pulling the belt loose but leaving the robe firmly closed around her body. “Are you sure you’re ready for this?”

“I did mention the death part, right?” he said, laughing. “I’m more than ready, Abby. Show me.”

“Can’t say I didn’t warn you…” and with that, she opened the robe and let it fall to the floor. Martin gaped at the sight in front of him. Never in his life, ever, had he seen anything so unbelievably sexy as what he saw in front of him in that moment. He must have inadvertently made a deal with the devil in order to have that in the room with him. She was absolutely, sinfully provocative.

His eyes raked down her body, pausing at every sexy, delicious curve. She wore a deep emerald corset with wickedly erotic black lace trim. The bodice hugged her ribs tightly and tucked her already tiny waist into a perfect hourglass center. The satin flared back out to accent her hips in a way that made him want to worship at her feet.

Then, as if that weren’t enough, the bottom rim of ribbon and lace held black garters that traced sexy lines down to black thigh-highs. Those alluring sheer hose hugged her legs with a lace border that nearly danced around the soft, creamy skin of her thighs. His eyes traveled back up to rest on her full breasts straining against the satin laced up to a bow between them.

The exaggerated curves were even more accented by a wisp of hair that waved down her neck and nestled in her substantial cleavage. He noticed one last detail around her hips. A scant strip of lace served as panties. She obviously put those on over the garters. He could strip them off and leave her in the corset and thigh-highs if he wanted to.

Oh. Sweet. God. He wanted to.

“Damn…” was the only word he could think to say as he walked the length of the room in about four long strides. His hands gripped around her ribs and he could feel the heat of their skin reacting through the satin and ribbings. He jerked her forward that way, her whole body following the constraints of the corset. She fell into him hard and let her hands rest at his chest.

He was no longer laughing with her playfully. Now he was so sexed-out he was ready to throw her down and take her hard. She looked at him with wide, expecting eyes, wanting the same thing. He hoped she was expecting the animal side of him, because that’s exactly where she took him the minute she dropped her robe.

He grabbed her by the hair as he searched her mouth with his desperate tongue. His other hand gripped at her back, bottom and shoulder with the full strength of his desire. She was the only woman to evoke this kind of passion from deep within, and he couldn’t turn it off. He jerked her hair back again to give himself access to her neck.

Excerpt two:

He walked down the steps and dropped his bag next to the couch. As always when upset, he walked to his keyboard, plugged his headphones to inject the music directly into his ears. He played deep, rhythmic pieces that spoke to the heavy feeling in his chest. He connected with the music and played whatever he needed to get some tension out of his shoulders. After a long while of playing piece after piece, he began to ease into a better mindset. Finally, he let himself think about Abby.

He focused on those lips of hers again. He loved to watch them speak. He loved her smile and that little focused bite of hers. He allowed himself to remember that study of her lips when she held herself still, simply so he could experience every millimeter of her beautiful mouth.

He had touched and explored and licked every warm surface of her while she laid beneath him so sweetly. He remembered exactly the pressure of her full bottom lip under his teeth, just as he imagined. As he let his mind wander through that exploration, a song started to form in his head.

He experienced that study of her lips again, but this time through his fingers on the keys. The notes started light and feathery, hesitantly, just like the kiss had. He let the song grow in intensity, moving up and down the scales. The melody played out the soft brushes of his lips and the deep moves of his tongue.

The rhythm moved slowly, then sometimes quickly. The crescendo and decrescendo matched the shifting intensity of his body’s response to her. The forte moments of the song mimicked every sensation when he was so lost in her. Then, much like that precise, beautiful moment with Abby, the song ended on a pianissimo, peaceful, soft chord.

He was in awe of the moment he just lived through. He remembered every note he played, and he played the melody again with his eyes closed. The music came from her memory, not from his creation. The music was her and for her.

I love a good love story. I reread the first kiss a few times before I read on…even in my own books. That moment gets me every time no matter how often I revisit that beautiful connection. I dive into every story to the point where I have so many fictional boyfriends that I can’t keep track of them all.

In the world of reality, I have a loving and tolerant husband who smiles and rolls his eyes every time I tell him about my latest fictional love affair. I have two autistic pre-teen boys who keep me on my toes. I have a psychotic Golden Retriever (I was told those don’t exist…) and a cat that rules our house. I used to be the queen. Our regal feline has usurped my throne and demoted me to Prime Minister.

I studied English/Journalism at Miami University in Ohio, have a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the University of Dayton and I spent five years teaching even more personality-rich pre-teens. For some sick reason, I actually enjoyed teaching junior high. Now as a stay-at-home mom, I’m clinging to that status by throwing my hat in the author’s ring and hoping I get to keep it there.

CHAPTER ONE

Chloe Bennett eyed the blinking red light on the desk. The nurse’s call bell barked incessantly, chopping through the silence of the night.

“There’s no way I’m going back in there!” Susan, another nurse, declared. She planted a hand on her hip. “That patient has been on the bell all night long! It’s two in the morning for God’s sake!”

Chloe issued a sigh and rose from her seat in front of the charts she’d been working on. Her gaze traveled down the dark hall that tunneled off from the nurse’s station. Usually at this time of night, most of the patients were asleep and all that would be heard was the intermittent beep of a cardiac monitor or the deep snore of a restless sleeper. Now in the distance, she could see a light wink on and off over Mr. Barkley’s door. He was an elderly patient who’d been admitted for heart monitoring. The red light flashed in rhythm to the noise bullying the quiet night, demanding attention once again.

“I’ll go. I think he’s just confused.”

“I’ll say he’s confused. He thinks my ass is a squeezy toy!” Susan bristled.

“Poor Mr. Barkley is not himself tonight. He seems more disoriented than ever.” Chloe chewed pensively on her bottom lip. The hairs on the back of her neck stood at attention as her gaze lingered down the hall.

She brushed her palms across the front of her white nurse’s uniform and made her way to his room, her sturdy shoes thudding on the laminate tiles.

Mr. Barkley’s mental status waxed and waned. For a few days he’d been extremely lucid, then his mind slipped between pleasant dementia and foggy reality. Even then, there were times Chloe swore she saw a bead of clarity rolling in his cloudy blue eyes. The bead seemed to condense all the wisdom and knowledge that his eighty-five year old brain had accumulated, and Chloe loved his convoluted stories. Imbedded in those stories was a richness of experience, and the contentment of a life lived well. She’d miss him after he was discharged. Though Mr. Barkley often became overly zealous with the nurses, he was rarely agitated.

She frowned, a strange feeling of déjà vu plaguing her. Just two weeks ago, she’d had another patient who’d exhibited the same behavior: acute confusion and agitation. She’d mentioned it to her nursing supervisor, but Nurse Wall hadn’t thought much of it because many of the elderly patients had some baseline dementia. But Chloe knew Mr. Barkley well and tonight he just seemed…off.

She pushed open the door to the small room and entered, her heart clenching as she heard Mr. Barkley’s raspy voice yelling in the dark.

“Shhh, it’s okay, Mr. Barkley. It’s okay.” She flipped on the soft overhead light and walked swiftly to his bed, something deep inside her responding to the neediness in his voice.

“Who is it? Who…who’s there?” Mr. Barkley asked, his voice jumping with agitation.

“Shhh, it’s okay. It’s me, Chloe, your nurse.”

She watched as his bushy white brows pulled together. “Thanks for coming to the beach with me. I just fell off my surfboard. I hate when the waves are so rough.”

Chloe smiled warmly and placed a hand on Mr. Barkley’s shoulder. “You’re not at the beach, Mr. Barkley.”

She brushed back a strand of paper thin, white hair that had fallen over his eyes, thinking wryly that he’d probably been having a good time surfing in his head before his imagined fall. A red cast glazed his eyes, and she wondered if he’d been rubbing them.

“Mr. Barkley, you’re at the hospital. You’re at Washington Memorial Hospital.”

His mind seemed to clear as he bounced his gaze around the room. “Hmmm…yeah. Those waves were rough. Mom told me not to go in today. She wanted me to stay home. She’s waiting for me. I have to go with her.”

Chloe sighed and tried to reorient him, hoping to nudge him back to the present.

“So,” she announced with a big smile. “Tomorrow you’ll be returning home!” She eyed the IV bag quickly dripping into the clear tube snaking into his arm.

Mr. Barkley pursed his thin lips as his eyes filled with alarm. “No, I won’t. They won’t let me.”

She smiled gently, her eyes returning to his restless blue gaze. “Yes. I got your discharge papers today. Your granddaughter is coming to get you in the morning. It’ll be a wonderful day.”

Chloe flinched as his gnarled hand suddenly grasped her arm, jerking it to a stop as she was about to check the flow of the IV.

“I won’t be going home! They won’t let me leave here! I know they won’t!” Mr. Barkley was almost shouting now, his hand clutching tighter, his jagged nails biting into her skin. His eyes became wild and panicked like a cornered animal.

She softened her voice, trying not to react to his acute distress. If Mr. Barkley saw that she was upset, it might make him more agitated. Instead, she smiled and placed her other hand comfortingly over the one that had a painful grip on her.

“Let’s not think about that now, okay? You should really get some rest.” She looked around and whispered, “You need to keep up your strength for surfing.”

At that, Mr. Barkley’s eyes fogged over and he relaxed his hold on her arm. A dreamy smile pulled at the corner of his lips.

Chloe smiled again, her heart tugging in her chest. She barely noticed the tiny half-moons his nails had embedded in the pale skin of her forearm.

Her gaze landed on his blanket that had fallen on the floor, and she turned to pick it up, almost jumping out of her skin when she felt a firm pinch of her rear end.

“Mr. Barkley!” She turned and waggled an admonishing finger at the elderly man, but her annoyance lost its fervor as she watched a sly smile spread across his lips.

Demented, my ass!

She talked to him while she straightened the cluttered space, telling him how wonderful life would be at home. Mr. Barkley was an active eighty-five year old. From what his family had told her, he loved taking daily walks in the park with his granddaughter, singing old tunes, and going out to the movies.

She folded the blanket into a small square and was about to lay it at his feet when her gaze landed on Mr. Barkley’s face. For a second she stood stock still, her brain fighting with the fear in her accelerating heart.

“Mr. Barkley!” she yelled. When she got no response, she screamed his name even louder. Rushing forward, she placed a palm on his shoulder and shook him roughly, already tasting the bitter dread leaking onto her tongue.

Mr. Barkley’s face was turning a pasty white and the wrinkles in his skin seemed to press flat. One look at his still chest told her his lungs had abandoned their function and he wasn’t breathing. Chloe’s heart bang against her ribcage as she dug a finger into his neck to search for his carotid pulse. Not finding one, she opened her mouth and screamed a Code Blue alarm at the top of her lungs, the sound reverberating through the dark corridors like an agonizing cry.

Code blue! Code blue! Room 405!”

Willing her trembling hands to work, she initiated CPR, trying to suppress the tears stinging the back of her eyes. She saw a tinge of blue cling to her patient’s lips and horror gripped her heart. In seconds the room filled with people. Footsteps were heard running down the previously quiet hall. Sleepy doctors in blue scrubs filed quickly through the door, shouting in her direction, asking questions, and demanding answers.

Someone pushed her aside and took over doing chest compressions while another person pulled Mr. Barkley’s gown away and started attaching colorful wires to his pale, clammy skin. Again Chloe had to step back as medical equipment, a crash cart, the Code Blue team, and young doctors in training flowed towards the bed in a ceaseless wave of bodies.

One doctor yelled. “How old is this man?”

The question was thrown at Chloe. She blinked rapidly, linking her fingers behind her back to stop her shaking. She felt so cold.

“He…he’s eighty-five,” she replied.

“Are you sure he wants to be resuscitated?”

“Does he have signed orders?” It was her nursing supervisor, Nurse Wall. She skewered Chloe with a beady gaze.

Chloe’s head shot up and she stuttered. “Yes…yes. I mean, no…no. He wants everything done. He wants to be resuscitated!” she answered, hating the quiver in her voice. She started attaching the colorful leads of the heart monitor to his chest.

Just then, she saw Susan rush into the room. She handed off some extra supplies, tossed her a sympathetic gaze, and then scurried away, presumably to check on the other patients.

“Tell me about this patient!” A voice was directed at her. It was Dr. Wasko, the doctor who’d taken charge.

Chloe almost bit through her bottom lip, but she took a deep breath and relayed Mr. Barkley’s medical information. She watched in a robotic state of shock as the team worked on Mr. Barkley’s lifeless body. A large liter bag of saline was thrust at her, and she set it up to flow openly into her patient’s IV. She glanced at the noisy monitor failing to get a blood pressure reading, and the flat line on the cardiac screen. Someone continued compressions, while another person pulled his jaws wide and inserted a breathing tube into his throat. Mr. Barkley’s pale body seemed so puny, unresponsive and crowded with busy hands and medical devices.

Adept fingers pierce his groin with a long, ferocious-looking needle, drawing back dark red blood from his artery. Chloe’s stomach twisted and turned as she began to lose faith. The room was a swirling frenzy of chaotic order and the air was stale and oppressive. Doctors shouted orders, medications were handed over, and monitors beeped urgently. Someone yelled “Clear!” and everyone stepped back from the bed. Chloe watched as paddles discharged on Mr. Barkley’s chest and his inert body flopped like a fish. She felt an arm slip around her shoulder and she turned her head as Susan leaned in.

“You okay? It doesn’t look good.”

Chloe nodded, but swiped at a tear threatening to fall.

“Are the other patients okay?” she asked weakly.

“Yeah. A little shaken up. They can hear what’s going on, but we’re keeping things calm.”

Chloe saw a movement from the corner by the bathroom. One of the new phlebotomists, Nigel, moved toward the door. He shot her a dazed look, then sadly shook his head, his mouth pulling downward. Her attention was drawn away when Susan leaned in.

“I heard that Dr. Markson’s been called. He should be here any minute now. He’s just getting out of surgery.” She informed nervously.

Chloe gasped, her eyes growing wide. She felt her heart rate rev as Susan gave her hand a quick squeeze. Dr. Markson was one of Washington Memorial’s finest cardiac surgeons. He was lauded for making great advances in cardiac surgery at his young age, and was renowned for his expertise in Robotic Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery. He was almost a deity at the hospital. From what Chloe had heard, his colossal ego was the only thing that surpassed his reputed glory. She’d never had the opportunity, thank God, to meet him. Her night shift ended at seven in the morning, just before the surgeons rounded on their patients. She did, however, see the nurses of the oncoming shift sweat nervously whenever they got slated with a patient of his.

“I’m going back outside. You need anything?” Susan asked.

Chloe shook her head, her eyes glued to the activity on the bed. She watched numbly as the doctor in charge stepped back from Mr. Barkley’s body, shaking his head gravely. A single tear meandered down her cheek. Oh, God…

She braced herself as Dr. Wasko’s mouth open, ready to pronounce her patient dead. She was just issuing a prayer when a large shadow filled the doorway, distracting her morbid thoughts.

“What the hell is going on here?” The booming voice stirred the air in the room, causing all noise to cease.

Chloe took a step back as the large looming figure stalked quickly to the bed. She held her breath as she watched a man, who could be none other than Dr. Markson, part the sea of bodies to stand over Mr. Barkley. He was yelling now, his voice belting like thunder as he demanded answers. The chiseled lines of his face pull taut as a storm swirled in his dark blue eyes. He shoved aside one doctor and his powerful arms locked tight as he started aggressively pounding on Mr. Barkley’s flaccid body in an attempt to resuscitate him.

He yelled for medications in the process, growling a nasty curse as one doctor’s shaky hands tarried. Chloe didn’t know why, but as she watched determination sculpt the lines of Dr. Markson’s face, hope started to blossom. Her eyes widened as the cardiac monitor flickered, the staccato beat jostling the glowing flat line, causing doubtful gazes to latch on to it hopefully. For long moments, Dr. Markson worked furiously, but the stubborn line kept lying flat, refusing to jump to life.

Suddenly Dr. Wasko stepped forward, his hand snaking out to stop Dr. Markson’s unrelenting pounding.

“Brad,” he said gently. “Brad!” He raised his voice when he got no response. “Brad! Stop. He’s dead! You have to pronounce him.”

Chloe’s lungs fought to take a breath. She felt as if everyone in the room was afraid to breathe, as absolute quiet settled around them like heavy fog. It seemed even the machines felt the tautness of the moment and had paused their blinking and beeping.

Dr. Wasko inhaled deeply and sighed. “Brad. It’s over. He was an old man. His heart gave out.”

Chloe watched Dr. Markson’s head snap up. His jaw squared angrily and a fist flew through the air. A collective gasp whooshed around the room like liquid swirling in a glass. Chloe’s hand clapped over her mouth in disbelief. Dr. Wasko ducked, but could not avoid the impact of the glancing blow, and his head snapped to the side. Another doctor rushed over to hold Dr. Markson, but just as quickly as he’d ignited, Dr. Markson seemed to calm, and the other man steered clear.

Christ, Brad!” Dr. Wasko shook his head, his eyes narrowing. He held his jaw and tested it. “I’ll let this go. I can see you’re hurting. But, don’t ever do that again. Best friend or not, I’ll kick your ass.” He took a deep breath and pointed to the body on the bed. “Now. Pronounce him!”

Dr. Markson stared angrily, his silence derisive. Chloe could sense his barely leashed fury coupled with profound loss and grief. The emotions emanating from him were terrifying. She briefly wondered if there was more than a patient-doctor relationship.

Dr. Wasko sighed in exasperation, looked at his watch, and then turned to Nurse Wall. “Mr. Barkley is pronounced dead. Time of death four twenty one a.m.” At that, he turned and left the room. It was as though a tight band had snapped. Suddenly gazes darted about, seeking confirmation on what had just been witnessed. No one dared to look in Dr. Markson’s direction. Feet hurried towards the door, making a hasty escape.

“What the fuck happened here?” The deep voice was controlled, but infused with rage. “Who found him?” Dr. Markson addressed Nurse Wall, his tall frame hovering menacingly over her.

Chloe’s back hugged the wall. She felt her stomach plummet to her feet when Nurse Wall’s head swiveled towards her. A pair of intensely blue eyes locked on hers, and Chloe thought she’d faint from the power of that angry gaze. A cold wave blew down her spine, but ironically she could feel sweat bead on her temple and upper lip. Afraid, she pulled her gaze away and jerked it around the room, not surprised by it’s now near emptiness. Everyone had fled, she guessed afraid of Dr. Markson’s wrath.

In two long-legged strides, he was towering over her, his hard gaze zooming in on her face.

“What the fuck happened to my patient?” he growled.

“I…I…don’t know. He was just so confused and agitated tonight! One minute we were talking, and then…then…” Chloe swallowed nervously, but her weepy gaze kept returning to the bed where her dead patient lay.

“I demand an explanation! Now! Let’s go outside.”

Chloe jumped as the deep baritone shot through her like a blazing cannonball. She could clearly see pain in Dr. Markson’s eyes, but her priority was her patient. God! They had just left him there in a mess of tubes and wires and blood. Even his gown was now on the floor! He was naked.

She squared her shoulders and looked into the penetrating gaze that stabbed her, trying to ignore the fissures it made in her composure.

“I’ll talk to you after I take care of Mr. Barkley,” she said shakily and took a step towards the bed.

His large hand shot out to grab her and she jolted as his touch burned her skin. She looked at the long, tapered fingers circling her upper arm, then stared into the bottomless eyes that seemed to be a pathway to hell. Anger settled in, quickly sweeping away her fear. She would not allow him to bully and intimidate her.

“Get your hand off me. Now. And I refuse to talk to you while Mr. Barkley is laying here, dead. I will not disrespect him like this.” Her words sieved through clenched teeth.

She watched air charge through his flared nostrils as his forehead pinched in a flagrant show of disbelief.

Chloe heard her nursing supervisor shuffle up next to them. Peripherally she could see her wringing her hands, her fingers white with anxiety.

“I’m so sorry, Dr. Markson. She doesn’t know what she’s doing. She’s always been a bit of a problem. Chloe, why don’t you step outside with Dr. Markson. I’ll take care of Mr. Barkley’s preparation.”

Chloe’s gaze darted to her supervisor. She could feel the wheels roll over her as she lay sprawled under the bus.

“No. He’s my patient. I want to take care of him. We were…close,” she beseeched the other woman, but could see Nurse Wall’s lips tighten angrily. “There’s no reason why Dr. Markson can’t wait.”

Her supervisor’s face colored angrily. “Listen, Nurse Bennett, when Dr. Markson asks you to do something, you do it! I cannot believe your insubordination!”

Instantly bells started ringing in her head, echoing a warning. He could have her fired in the blink of an eye with just one word to her nursing director, and she desperately needed this job, but now anger and grief overruled common sense. She pursed her lips and turned back to him, noticing he was staring at her. His head swiveled and his gaze roved Mr. Barkley’s body. She saw shadowy grief fill his eyes, and abruptly he dropped his hand from her arm. She inhaled deeply, finally able to breathe again.

“I’ll be out after I’m done,” Chloe informed him firmly.

Nurse Wall’s eyes rounded. “Your behavior is completely outrageous! Who do you think you are? I want you to know we’ll be recommending your discharge!”

Her stomach plummeted, but she pushed back the billowing fear. She did notice that Dr. Markson turned abruptly to Nurse Wall, his eyebrows raised in question. He took a step back and speared his long fingers through his hair, a look of exhaustion blanketing his face.

“I will be waiting in the nurse’s station. And please do not test my patience.”

He turned and stalked from the room, leaving her with her glaring supervisor. Chloe tried to ignore the vehemence leaking from Nurse Wall as she steeled her emotions and focused on the task ahead.

Dr. Brad Markson paced the small room at the back of the nursing station, his long legs taking him from one side of the confining square to the next in just three determined strides. His fingers forked through his hair for about the tenth time since he’d walked into the room. His back ached and his temples throbbed from the unrelenting pressure bearing down on him. Usually he could shoulder the responsibilities of his position and tackle any obstacle that came at him with an innate skill that others openly admired and awed. But today had been a brutal day, a true test of a man wound so tight he threatened to collapse, and this last devastating blow was crushing his shoulders with its mighty weight.

He’d been in surgery for the past six hours repairing a major coronary anomaly that other doctors had deemed inoperable. Not a candidate for a heart transplant, the patient’s prognosis had been grave. The young man would have been lucky to last another week without Brad’s intervention. The surgery had been grueling, requiring every measure of his skill and concentration. The cardiac team had all but fallen at his feet as the stuttering heart had jumped to life and the muscle started to pump vigorously as he’d finished the surgery. Brad had come out of the OR on an adrenaline high, full of hope and testosterone, only to hear the news about Mr. Barkley.

Mr. Barkley had been one of the first patients he’d treated with Robotic Coronary Bypass Surgery. That surgery had been a stunning success and had catapulted his career. Other doctors had thought Mr. Barkley’s cardiac muscle too damaged to tolerate the surgery, but Brad had been successful. Mr. Barkley’s supportive family had been greatly appreciative and extensively generous to the hospital in Brad’s honor. He’d quickly developed a close relationship with the family, frequently attending family functions, and he even had several as patients. It had only been in the last year or so that Mr. Barkley’s mental status had started to deteriorate, but he still had a productive life.

Brad ground to an abrupt halt, staring blindly at the wall. What the fuck? Mr. Barkley was supposed to go home tomorrow. What could have happened? How was he going to explain this to his family? He needed answers and that damn nurse told him he had to wait? He never had to wait for anyone! Yet, here he was, pacing a small disheveled room, waiting. He grumbled with annoyance, stemming the urge to march back to the room and drag her out. He could feel his stress simmering hotly below his skin, blistering his composure.

Brad looked down at his long fingers, frowning deeply when he saw the fine tremors start. Damn! He fished a pill bottle from the pocket of his scrub top, adeptly twisted the top and popped a tiny white oval under his tongue. Feeling the sharp edge of his anger dull slightly, he closed his eyes and sighed wearily. His heart lurched painfully as he thought of his patient’s family, especially Mary. Poor Mary. She was going to be devastated.

. Unable to contain his impatience a moment longer, he took a step towards the door just as it swung open.

“What the hell took you—” Brad’s roaring words crashed abruptly as his gaze landed on the nurse’s face.

Her countenance was glazed with a sickly pallor and the large hazel eyes that had previously glared defiance at him now studied the floor with a dull dispassion. He pulled his lips thin and turned his gaze from her, surprised by how much her doleful expression moved him. He couldn’t imagine what she’d just had to do. She’d said that she and Mr. Barkley were close. He supposed he should be sympathetic, but he had a difficult time considering anything except the task that lay ahead of him tonight. He’d have to call the family to inform them, then meet with them later in the morning. Just the thought sent crushing pressure sliding down his back-bone. He braced his arms across his chest.

“What happened in there?” His voice came out rougher than he’d intended.

Large, sad eyes hesitantly met his and he ignored the sudden jolt of emotion. “It—it’s as I said. We were talking and then he just coded. He seemed to just stop breathing.”

“Had he complained of anything? Chest pain? Trouble breathing?”

She swung her head back and forth, returning her nervous gaze to her feet. “Nothing. He was just confused.” He watched her forehead crease in a frown. “More tonight than usual. It’s so strange.”

“His mental status tends to fluctuate,” Brad explained. “Did he get all of his medication?”

The nurse nodded.

“On time?” he pressed.

At that, her head shot up and her dull eyes narrowed, filling with a glassy shine. She was obviously offended by his question. He almost smiled as he saw a hint of the defiance he’d witnessed back in his patient’s room.

“Of course on time,” she snapped.

He resumed his pacing, hands clasped behind his back. He shot a quick glance at her. She was still a statue by the door, her glare tracking his progress. “He was supposed to have his beta-blocker increased to fifty milligrams. Did he get the increase in medication?”

Her shoulders squared and her narrow jaw tightened. “That increase was not supposed to occur until tomorrow morning, after he was done with the IV taper. Those were the orders,” she stated archly.

Brad gave a perfunctory nod. She was right. He didn’t know why he felt the need to test her. She’d just been through hell and didn’t deserve his wrath. He sighed and delved his fingers into his hair, absorbing the anger and hatred that radiated like dark fumes from the nurse standing in front of him. Her lips were a slash of indignation and her eyes glazed with loathing. He knew if she had the liberty, she’d toss a few choice words in his direction.

He continued to pace silently while she waited in anticipation of his next question. Truthfully, he had no more questions. She’d told him all he needed to know. He thought back to Larry Wasko’s words. Mr. Barkley was an old man. And although he’d seemed to be doing well, his heart must have failed. Brad just didn’t deal well with losing patients. He had a tremendous respect for life. His job was to preserve it and keep people healthy. It pained him to lose a patient, especially someone he was close to. It wasn’t something that happened often. The tough week and this grueling day were beating at him like heavy fists, leaving dents in his usually solid nerves of steel. He stopped and pivoted towards the nurse, feeling like a jerk for having been so hard on her.

“That will be all.”

She hesitated, as if wanting to say something, but then turned to leave, no doubt in a hurry to escape him. Brad’s gaze landed on her arm and he frowned.

“You’re hurt. What happened?”

She turned back, her amber eyes wide with confusion, and then she followed his gaze to her forearm.

“Oh, nothing, really.”

She started to leave again and he strode impatiently towards her. Taking her arm to get a better look, he scrutinized the line of half-moon bruises that marched across her forearm. The flesh was starting to blotch a light purplish-red, and he noticed that some of the skin was broken. He traced a finger pad over the area, registering somewhere in his subconscious the smooth texture of her delicate skin.

“This looks new. Did this happen with Mr. Barkley?”

She jerked her arm away from his grasp, seeming annoyed by the question.

“Yes, but he didn’t mean to. He was just confused.”

“It’s not like him to be combative.”

“He wasn’t combative. Like I said, he seemed more confused tonight.” He watched her eyebrows pull together as she seemed to summon a memory. “He was saying something about leaving the hospital.”

“What was he saying?”

Her pinched forehead showed her clear exasperation with him, but it was his personality to be tenacious, to question everything.

At length, she shook her head. “He said ‘they won’t let me leave here’.”

“Here…as in?”

The nurse shrugged. “I don’t really know. The hospital, I think. He said he wouldn’t be going home. He was just so confused. He was also talking about surfing and falling from his surfboard.”

Brad smiled and noticed her nervous gaze land on his mouth, but then it quickly fluttered away. “He was a big surfer when he was young.”

She nodded, her glance veering eagerly towards the door.

Brad found himself staring at her face. “What’s your name?”

“Chloe.”

“You may go, Chloe.” He sighed and nodded his chin towards her arm. “Get that looked after.”

The words hadn’t fully left his lips before she was through the door. He stood silent for a moment, staring at the spot she’d occupied then ground the heels of his hands into his eyelids. Damn! He was stressed! He vaguely wondered if he should increase the dose of his medication.

Pulling his cell phone from his pocket, he settled for a different option and dialed the familiar number to his current stress reliever.

“One hour. Be naked when I get there!” He snapped his phone shut and headed through the door.

Book Review

pizap.com10.60058447951450941389336923904

This was my first Lisa Eugene Novel.  Once I started reading, Surrender My Love, I did not want to put the novel down. The mystery and pull between the hero and heroine had this reader totally engaged. Even though I enjoy romance reads, medical themes are not my normal read. But I have to say that I very much enjoyed this read. Though it is the second book in Eugene’s Washington Memorial Hospital Series, it can be read as a stand-alone. Or as I read it, out of order. The first novel in the series is, Steal My Heart. After reading Surrender My Love, I look forward to making the first book in the series, including Eugene’s Strictly Business my next reads.

In reading, Surrender My Love I encountered several large words. Now, don’t let this discourage you from reading this novel. Luckily my Kindle app has a dictionary function. So all I had to do was touch the word on the screen and it would tell me what the word meant.  Learning new words is one reason I like to read books.  My motto is to , “learn something new each day.” Reading this novel, definitely helped me with this goal.

My mom was going to be a nurse in the early 50’s. However she got married instead, and back then a woman could not be married and be a nurse. She did enjoy reading books in which doctors and nurses where the main characters. So in a way, I felt like I was reliving happy memories while reading this novel. I can totally understand Chloe’s character. I watched my mom look after her own mother when she had dementia. Looking after someone you love with health issues, especially the ones Chloe’s mother and my own grandmother had takes its toll emotionally, physically, and monetarily on the caregiver. It is really heartbreaking and is something never forgotten no matter how much time passes.

All I can say is that the patients at Washington Memorial Hospital sure get good care. I thought it was interesting to read in the novel that Chloe used a flashlight at night to check on the patients. Also that the hall lights dimmed in the evening hours, and that she and Susan checked on their patients every thirty minutes. I have been in the hospital as a patient a few times. I think the hall lights stayed on constant, and the nurses came in a few times, but not every thirty minutes. I am just glad that I usually had someone stay with me when unfortunately in the hospital. As a patient, at least for me, it can be scary at times.

Writing was spot on, big words an all. The story-line was engaging, interesting, filled with romance, mystery, and humor (thanks to Bea). Enjoyed the story from start to end. I only wish the end had not been so fast. Wishing it could have been drawn out a little longer. It was like slam, bang, HEA.  As mentioned before, I read this novel first and out of sequence. I reading about the character Nina, I was a bit curious about her husband. Now I know that her story is in, Strictly Business (Amazon). Readers are also briefly introduced to Maggie who is also a nurse at Washington Memorial. Her story is in, Steal My Heart (Amazon). One of my favorite parts of the novel was when our hero and heroine went to visit the professor at his home. Loved all his animals, sounded like my house, the talking to them and everything. However, my dogs have more creative and original names…  🙂

I am looking forward to making these novels my next reads.

From the instant the hero and heroine meet there is chemistry. This chemistry only gets hotter as the story goes along. Readers, let this story be a lesson to you, don’t judge a person by their outside, but about their inside… (though being a HOT doctor is a perk!)

Do I recommend this read? YES!!!
