Synopsis

Being the niece of the biggest star in the world isn’t easy–especially when someone is trying to kill you.

Nikki Solange is a small town Tennessee girl.  When she hits Hollywood and tries to become a movie Producer, she’s in for the culture shock of her life–and finding a D-list actor turned up-and-coming director floating face down in his Beverly Hills swimming pool is the least of it.  Now Nikki must walk the gauntlet that is Hollywood and try to stay alive because someone from Nikki’s hard-scrabble past is out to make sure that she ends up dead.

Pretending to be a Hollywood playboy film producer is easy when one of the world’s richest men is backing you.

Ex Marine sniper Rush Nelson is back from his final tour in Afghanistan and is now a security specialist for one of the world’s richest men, media mogul Ted Robinoff. Backed by his boss, Rush has a solid cover-story that includes some serious Armani threads, a pulse-pounding car, and a limitless expense account.  All to protect Robinoff, his business interests, and Robinoff’s family, which includes Ted’s superstar wife Celeste ‘Cici’ Solange and her pain-in-the-ass niece Nikki. Rush must achieve his directive without ruining his cover. Easy–except for one problem–Nikki Solange. Rush is falling for her.

When your mission is security, falling for the person you’re meant to protect is the number one rule not to break.

Guest Post

Nikki Solange is the perfect mix of tough and insecure.  She is so resilient and has so much perseverance.  She is a character who has been knocked down by life so many times and yet continues to get back up and keep going.

Author Quote

There was a path that each person walked, and you could shout to them, but somehow the wind that whistled through their ears on their own path always seemed to drown out the words of advice and wisdom. The best you could do when your paths met was reach out and give them your hand.  –Christina Darmides

Marr: This quote, to me, speaks to the loneliness of life.  How, even when we are loved, we often feel alone and bare the weight of our life and our tragedies alone, but also how we can reach out to each other and give and feel love.

 Excerpt

Rush was screwed. Every which way. He looked over his shoulder, away from the full moon that cast a full glow across the Ojai Valley and toward the girl who slept in the bed. Her face was relaxed in the moonlight, a pale alabaster with her pretty rosebud lips still bee-stung from his rough kisses and her wild hair a fiery halo that framed her face.

Nikki got to him. Her combination of naïveté, innocence, bravado, and pain-in-the-ass nature got to him, pulled him tight, closer than he should have been or ever expected to be. This was not what Ted Robinoff had in mind when he’d told Rush to get close. A sick feeling clenched through Rush’s gut. No, Ted hadn’t intended that Rush should bed Ted’s niece. A deep inhale of breath pulsed through Rush. What was this? What had he managed to do—his weakness to this silly, sad sort of girl would cost him his job, might cost him his cover, might cost him his entire career.

He closed his eyes. You couldn’t build a relationship upon a lie. And Nikki knew nothing about him other than his lies. He was meant to protect her; this was a finite gig. A gig that was meant to end and he was meant to slip seamlessly into her past as she found a future with her type of guy. A guy who really wanted to be in entertainment or a doctor or lawyer or perhaps an executive that rolled with Ted.

Not with a man who lied for a living. Not with a man who used his body, his mind, his smarts, and the money of the man he worked for to ferret out the deepest secrets people never wanted exposed. Finding secrets, exposing lies, was Rush’s specialty, and that was not the type of man Nikki Solange should ever be in a relationship with—Rush didn’t want her to be.

He turned back toward the cathedral window beside the bed. Shadows bounced around the edges of trees. They would return to Los Angeles tomorrow. He would tell Ted what had happened. There was no other way but to shed this guilt and take the hit. Ted would decide how to proceed because Rush was too damn close to even see.

Excerpt

With gentle brushes of his tongue, his teeth, and deep breaths that expel hotly against my skin, Trenton travels lower and lower at a maddeningly slow pace, teasing and tickling me.

I writhe on the bed, anticipating his arrival. He sweeps his hand down the inside of my leg, clasps the back of my knee, and separates me a little more. His soft lips drift along my inner thighs. Then he opens his mouth and licks me right where I need him most.

My hips launch off the mattress. “Oh . . . Trenton!”

I feel the hint of a smile on his lips as he returns for more.

I can’t comprehend all of the sensations that blast through me as he repeats the slow sweep of his tongue, dragging deeper and deeper. The sucking . . . the swirling . . . the flicking . . . it’s far too much and too perfect, all at once. I wind my hand in his hair, quaking and panting, my climax approaching—

“Not yet,” he murmurs. “I want to be inside you when you come.”

Excerpt

When I stepped into the living room, my jaw dropped at the sight of him naked.

“Oh, I’m sorry!” I quickly turned away but not before the sight of him was seared into my memory. Images of carved muscles and exotic tattoos danced across my mind.

“Wow, that was quick. I thought you’d be in there longer.” I heard him laugh and the subsequent thud of his drenched sweats being thrown into a corner hamper. “You can turn around. I’m not naked, ya know. Unless you consider being shirtless as naked.”

I turned around and noticed he had a white towel around his waist. His torso was still fully bare though. Tattoos ran along the side of his chest and extended down his arm. They were mostly a mix of tribal designs but one tattoo stood out for

me. A picture of a large hammer was boldly etched on his upper arm. An unwelcome desire flittered in my stomach as I imagined running my fingertips over the inked lines.

I wasn’t opposed to seeing him shirtless at all. Not. At. All.

I forced myself to make eye contact with him, but was surprised to find him not doing the same. His eyes were wide, and they were roaming down and up my freshly showered body.

When his eyes finally met mine, his lips curved wickedly. “You clean up well.”

My cheeks flushed. “Thanks,” I replied, slightly uncomfortable. “I feel a lot better without all that lake gunk on me. I really appreciate the clothes, although they might be a little big for me.” I gestured to the jeans that were threatening to fall down my hips.

He looked me over again, dark eyes subtly lingering at certain parts: thighs, chest, lips. “No, you look good—real good.” His hand gestured to the couch. “Have a seat. I’ll get you some warm tea and a belt. I can get you back to your place after I wash up.”

He grabbed my wet clothes from me and set them down on the kitchen counter while I took a seat on his couch. I thought

it’d be a relief to sit down and relax but I found myself tense and restless, wondering who this guy was and what I’d gotten myself into by agreeing to come to his place.

He went into the kitchen and brought me a cup of tea. It smelled fragrant and spicy and the hot mug felt good in my hands, calming my nerves temporarily. I sipped slowly, enjoying the fluid warming up my chest as he went into his bedroom to search for a belt. Moments later, he returned.

“Thank you so much,” I said as he handed me the belt and sat down on the edge of the coffee table inches away from me.

He, in his shirtless glory, carefully watched me bring the cup of tea to my lips. I brought the edge to my mouth but didn’t drink, too distracted by the desire to touch my lips against the soft skin of those hard pecs right in front of me. I flicked my gaze to his to avoid staring at his chest. The concerned way he studied me with those dark irises matching the color of his damp hair was making me squirm in my seat. Not to mention the peripheral view of that towel around his waist was approaching scandalous. He didn’t cross his legs like I would if I were wearing a skirt and I fought the urge to snag a glance down at that distinctly male area. But it was hard to resist. Was this what it was like to be on the other end of someone trying to cop a peek up your skirt?

“How’s the tea?”

His voice interrupted my thoughts and I hurriedly swallowed a big gulp that burned my throat going down. “Very good, thanks,” I choked. “I feel bad you had to go to so much trouble to make it though. Sorry for being such a burden.”

“. . . Polite too.” He grinned. “Don’t worry about it. It was no trouble at all.” His demeanor was almost the opposite of what it had been at the lake—it was relaxed and warm now. But then again so was mine. The feeling of almost dying must be wearing off for both of us.

“Are you going to have some yourself?” I asked, uncomfortable with how he was just sitting there. Right there. Half naked in front of me with a ‘V’ shaped muscle around his pelvis tempting my eyes to look down to where the slanted lines met. Wasn’t he going to take his shower?

“Probably in a bit.”

Seeing him in no hurry to leave, I wracked my brain for a conversation topic. “So . . .” I looked down at the shirt I was wearing and pinched the lettering to try to end the silence. “Are you in the Air Force?”

He paused for a second longer than I was expecting. “No, I’m just a student. Senior, actually. You go to school here too?”

I nodded. “Yeah, sophomore.”

“Cool. So why did you come to campus so early?”

“I thought it’d be good to have some time by myself to prepare for the semester. You know, mentally prepare and all that.”

He nodded. “Alone time, yeah. Helps to work things out on your own sometimes. People can be stressful, especially at this school where people like to gossip. I swear it’s like every student’s minor here.”

I wondered if his comment was specifically directed toward me and my circumstances. Did he know who I was and my reputation? “Yeah, I’m not too interested in rumors. They’re often wrong anyway.” I shifted my legs and happened to briefly brush against his. I felt my nipples tighten from the unintentional intimate contact.

His eyes narrowed and he glanced at the offending leg. He looked at me for a while, apparently deep in thought. When his eyes glanced down at my chest, I saw an intense flicker in those dark irises—or was it a spark? “Haven’t met anyone here who doesn’t like gossip,” he said smoothly. “You do know you’re at Arrowhart right? Gossip is big here. It’s only normal that you’d be interested.”

“Yeah, I know,” I replied. And boy did I know. “But maybe I’m not normal.”

The smile he gave had an edge to it that made me uncomfortable and aroused at the same time. “I’d say so as well. Seeing imaginary cats and falling into frozen lakes isn’t exactly normal,” he teased, before his voice lowered intimately. “But then again, normal’s boring.”

A heated ache moved through me. Was it my imagination or was he flirting with me? It didn’t seem like he realized who I was. I noticed again how unusually neat the place was. Did he have a girlfriend that cleaned for him? Or his mom? “So do you live here by yourself?” My voice came out huskier than I intended and I cleared my throat, hoping he didn’t notice.

He smiled. “Yeah, I get plenty of alone time here.”

I found that difficult to believe given his devilish good-looks. It would be easier for me to believe if he’d said he had a ticket system for girls lining up outside his apartment door. Maybe even a BYOC policy—Bring Your Own Condom. That could explain the contents of his bathroom trash.

I forced another gulp down my throat, uncomfortable with how being so near him made me restless. “What do you like to do in your alone time?”

“In my alone time?” He cocked a brow and looked at me with curiosity.

I glanced at his sculpted chest because I couldn’t help myself. “Yeah, like when no one’s around, just in private.” I was thinking about how I liked to mope and draw in my alone time and was hoping to find common ground between us. He probably didn’t sit on icy bridges in his alone time but maybe he did something relatable so I could convince him I wasn’t just some depressed girl trying to kill herself.

A glint in his eye, his grin widened. “What do I like to do in my alone time?”he repeated, suggestively. “Oh, just the usual stuff guys do when they’re by themselves. You know, normal stuff.”

Oh no. Was I flirting with him? I’d unintentionally said something that could’ve been interpreted as a reference to his masturbation routine. God, how awkward. This was not my lucky day. I glanced at his towel and noticed a towering bulge that hadn’t been there before. My face flushed. Shit, did I do that?

About the Author

yessi Smith profile photo

I’m a Hispanic living in South Florida with my redneck husband from Texas and our “half breed” son, who is actually the reason I started writing again after years of celibacy. My son loves stories, but not the kind you can read in an existing book. No, he’d rather make up a story, complete with our own illustrations. So, thank you, Son, for igniting a flame I had let go out.
I also live with two dogs: a neurotic Border Collie we call Nitro and a midget Rottweiler named Nisa.
I have always found my sanctuary at the beach and in music and writing. I wish I could write rhymes so I could become a famous rapper, but rhyming is completely lost on me.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a Master’s in Human Resource Management. I have held several jobs, from picking up dog crap to upper management positions. And now I am hoping to leave the business world behind so I can live full time in a world that does not exist until I place my fingers on a keyboard and bring them to fruition.

readong, writing book reviews
I just finished reading, Life’s A Cappella by Yessi Smith.  I have to be honest and admit that when signing up for this tour, chatting with author, and even after having her takeover my Facebook page for a day, I did not really know what this novel was about. Then I began reading the novel. At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it or not. Right off the first page we are introduced to this woman in her early twenties. She is telling us the readers, flat out that her life has been a struggle, that she has moved on and even changed her name. All in the hopes of starting a new life. A life with better memories, a life she can control.
Next we learn that she lives in Miami, Florida. Now this drew me a little deeper into the story-line. Florida is one of my favorite states. One can tell reading this novel and really understanding Erin, that the ocean is important to her . Even Erin mentions several times throughout the novel that the beach calms her. Which is also true for this reviewer. My grandparents lived in Florida up until I was in say the fourth grade. We visited there every summer and Christmas. Lots of Happy Memories were made there, and are still with me now that I am in my forties .
We enter Erin’s world. Her best friend is Camilla. Erin met Erin while in College to be a nurse. Camilla introduces her to few of her close friends. These people make up Erin’s life. She goes to school, works, has her own apartment, and enjoys bonfires on the beach with her friends and a bottle of Patron.
The novel spans around a year and a half of time. Early in the novel Camilla asks Erin to go to Key West with her and their group of friends over school break. Here is where readers are introduced to Trent. Trent will become a main character and the Hero throughout the novel at this point. As well as playing a key role in Erin’s life.
After the break with its wonderful and invigorating trip to the Keys. School begins and so does a new routine for Erin. Now not only does her so called life include her close knit friends, but also Trent. Their relationship builds, and for once Erin’s life seems to be going as planned.
UNTIL…
Her past meets up with her. It is nothing bad. But she does get a shock. This shock complicates her controlled life and her relationships with others.
Erin has never been honest with her close knit of friends. Her past is a constant memory she would like to forget. That is why she moved and changed her name, to give her a redo in life. To be a brand new person, a stronger person.
This shocking news has her mentally and her body language even changes. She is protecting herself, walling her emotions about her past and present life inwardly. She does not need anyone, has never needed anyone. But Camilla and Trent being the close friends they are see that she is hurting. Words are said, that are in the heat of the moment. In the blink of an eye, they learn a part of her past that she never wanted them to know. Camilla tries to reach out to her. But this time with her dear Camilla is coming to an end that Erin does not see coming.
Resulting in Shock #2
(But you will have to read to find out what this is)
Her emotions are in turmoil. Literally knotting her up inside. Days are blurred, days pass. Erin is in so much pain.
Even though Erin had a big fight with Trent, he is there for her during this time. Before they have another argument. However, this most recent argument leaves Erin with new thoughts. So she begins to deal with shock #1, which eventually turns out to be a blessing.
Erin is a survivor. The novel is an experience in Life, with all its ups and downs, and happy middles.
During the novel she learns what being a friend is all about, says “I Love You” for the first time, and learns to truly trust someone. Erin matures throughout the novel. In the beginning she is the Miami party girl slash student. By the end she is complete, her world taken a full 360 degree turn along with her emotions and issues with her past.
I think you will like this story. It is not your average New Adult novel. It is about real type persons whom we may pass no matter where we live. The emotions and challenges faced in the plot, are REAL. The romance is REAL. The story could even be real in REAL Life somewhere out there, and we do not know it…
Do I recommend this novel, YES!!!

2.5 rating
2.5 Tears– This novel really speaks to the heart. Yes, I shed some tears. But most were happy tears!

3.5 Romance Rating- This novel has tender, loving, romance. But the romance does not distract from the story. The romance is not detailed, the reader just knows what action is being taken at times during the novel. But overall I the important thing is that Erin learns to love and trust in the novel. She puts her past behind her and uses it as a learning experience, not one to keep bottled up. But to open up about it, and learn how to use it to make her future a brighter, happier one for herself and those she loves.

Excerpt 1:

“Yes, I was supposed to be out of town all weekend. I wasn’t due back until tomorrow

evening.”

I sit back on the couch, leaning against the arm rest, facing him so I can watch him when he

talks. “Okay, so why are you back? You haven’t answered my other question yet either. Why were you

at my house?”

He raises my legs and scoots back on the couch, laying my legs across his lap and starts rubbing,

back and forth, up to my knees and back down to my ankles. “Do you want the honest truth or what I

think you want to hear?”

Duh! “Honesty, Caleb, always honesty.” I tilt my head sideways, trying to figure out what he is

about to tell me.

He turns his head and looks me square in the eyes. “I came back because I saw there was a

bad storm getting ready to hit.” Rubs up, then down. “I came back because I know you are terrified of

storms.” Rubs up, then down “I came back because I missed you. I came back because during the last

two years, I have always been with you during a storm. I went to your house to stay with you, but when I

drove up and saw that tree had fallen through your living room, it scared the hell out of me and I had to

make sure you were alright.”

There’s something else in his eyes. Something he’s not telling me, but I’m not going to push him

on the issue. I haven’t seen that look on his face before and I don’t know what to think about it.

“Thank you, Caleb. Thank you for always being there for me, for always knowing what I need

and when I need it. I don’t know what I would do without you in my life.” And I don’t.

In the last two years, he’s done more for me than any other man. I pull my legs away from

him and get up on my knees and scoot over next to him and wrap my arms around his neck. He brings

his arms around me, pulling me in closer, causing me to fall forward landing on his lap. I have my face

buried in the crook of his neck and his in mine. We just sit there, holding each other while the storm

goes on around us. Something has changed in Caleb, but having him hold me like this feels good. It feels

right. As soon as I think that I have a feeling of guilt wash over me. Gerrit.

Excerpt 2:

Ah, what the hell. “Sure, might as well get the full package.” I swing my legs off the couch and go sit in

front of him on the floor. I push the coffee table out of the way so I can extend my legs.

“Scoot up a little, you’re too far back.” I scoot forward just a bit. “Okay, that’s perfect.” He takes his

hands and pulls back my hair so it lays in between my shoulders, out of his way and starts in. As soon as

he places his hands on my shoulders, I can feel the warmth go through me. What is it with him and his

hands? It doesn’t take long before my mind is in the gutter, if you know what I mean.

“Seriously, that feels so good. I may never let you leave. I’ll just quit my job and you can do this all the

time.

He chuckles after that leaves my mouth. “That could be arranged, if you like.” He works his magic up

to the base of my neck where I can feel the most tension, leaning my head forward so he can get to it

better. I let out a breath and then quickly realize it wasn’t just a breath, but a moan. Oh, God. What is he

doing to me? I know he heard it to because his hands paused just long enough that I could notice. I lean

forward, bracing my hands in front of me while he works his way down my back as far as he can and

then back up. He moves my hair off to one side and leans down and kisses my neck. One single, soft kiss.

And then there’s another, right behind my ear.

Review

The first book in this series by Mandee Mae is Distant Myles. Both novels can be read as stand-alone and that is how I am currently reading,

A New Face to Love.  In both novels Amelia and Jamie are best friends. They are traveling nurses and met through their job. Both characters

have a wonderful sense of humor and are as close as sisters. Apparently two years ago, Amelia and Jamie visited Galveston, Texas for vacation. While there they

met two attractive guys. Their job was able to relocate with them, so for the past two years Texas has been there new home. During vacation Jamie was picking up some groceries and felt watched, and she was. Now two years later and at the same grocery store, she tells Amelia that Mystery Man is back. They quickly pay for

their purchase and leave the store as fast as they can. Both are freaked out. Amelia takes Jamie home, then goes to her own home (where apparently vacation love turned into serious love for Amelia and Myles). Jamie calls Caleb over and he stays the night.

Around a month or so later Jamie is out taking a walk in the park and feels that odd feeling of being watched again. Then she sees Mystery Man coming toward her. While trying to get away, she trips. After a few short words with this man, whose eyes look so familiar, she faints and wakes in his home.

Now she feels that pull toward him that she felt in High School.  Yet, what about Caleb? She knows that both men care for her. But which one will she choose.

The love she thought she had lost forever or the one that is such a good friend ?

New Image

I give the novel 3 1/2 roses. Story-line is straight forward, Characters are interesting and entertaining. There are a few grammar/spelling errors, but if you are enjoying the read, those can be overlooked.

3 .5 book romance review

Romance in the novel receives 3 1/2  lips/roses.  It was awhile before romance actually happened in the novel. When it does, Jamie is confused on who she actually loves. When she finally made her decision, I was surprised at who she choose. You will have to read the book to find out if who she chose. Will it be Gerrit or Caleb?

Synopsis

Laney Sawyer used to believe in love and all of the trappings that happily ever after could provide until Ryder Capwell crushed her

heart. When Laney is auctioned off as a prize at the drama department fundraiser the last person she expects to trade cold hard cash for her company is Ryder.

Ryder Capwell is in love with Laney Sawyer. One year ago she walked out of his life and took the light of his world right along with her. Ryder would do anything to have another chance with Laney, including purchasing her for the evening courtesy of Whitney Briggs University, and he does just that.

One thing leads to whiskey, which leads to a one-night stand. She thinks it’s revenge sex—he thinks its make up sex. Things can only go wrong from here.

EXCERPT

“Capwell”—he gives the ghost of a smile—“Ryder, Capwell,” he rumbles in his deepest octave and my stomach pinches tight. “I’ve always wanted to say that.” He smolders into me without even

trying, and good God almighty I’m way past the point of being seduced. It’s obvious this night is going to end with a bang, and now I feel like an idiot for putting myself within shooting, or rather bedding range. Face it. Those cobalt blue eyes of his cast a spell over me, and now, I’m voluntarily striding into his penthouse just hoping for some perversion.
He comes in close, and I’m terrified he’s going to kiss me and we’ll be tearing off one another’s clothes before I even get to berate myself properly for letting my vagina follow his happy trail right to his promiscuous penthouse.

Synopsis

It’s Maggie and Clay’s first Christmas together…

***Spoilers for those who have not read Find You in the Dark or Light in the Shadows***

Clay and Maggie have gone through the dark and come out on the other side. For the first time, they are on this journey together. Fighting for something they both need and can’t live without…each other.

But a long distance relationship is hard. Particularly for two people who are still trying to build something solid on a shaky and troubled foundation. Clay is finally out of treatment and is living in an out patient halfway house. He struggles with what he wants to do and where he wants to go. Questions he worries he will never have the answers to. Maggie is trying to transition into college life and learning how to create a future with someone who is over a thousand miles away.

As the months pass and they struggle with being a part, old insecurities and fears take root and threaten a love that has come so far.

When Maggie decides to fly to Florida as a surprise for Clay on Christmas, she is unsure whether it will be the first step toward what they both desperately want or whether it could possibly be the end of it all.

But with the holidays approaching, Maggie and Clay are reminded that even when the days are coldest, you can still find the warmth and that hope and love are the greatest gifts of all.

EXCERPT

“Let’s not make each other any promises we can’t keep right now. I’m not sure I can handle the disappointment,” I said, laughing humorlessly.

I was a trip wire set to detonate. These moments were a bitter reminder of the dark, twisted places my mind could go. Of where it still wanted to go.

I picked at the skin around my thumb, drawing blood. Seeing the bright red against my skin I stilled, gripping my hands into fists. “I’d better go.” I strangled out.

“Clay…” Maggie began. She shook her head, her face hidden by a long curtain of hair.

“You know I love you, right?” she asked and I hated how it felt like she was trying to convince both of us.

I nodded, still clenching my fists as tightly as they would go.

“Yeah, Mags. I know. I love you too,” I replied, the words as brittle as glass between my teeth.

Maggie was distracted by a knock on her door and I heard voices that had become unwelcomingly familiar.

“Just give me a minute to finish up and I’ll meet up with you,” Maggie was saying, her back to me as she spoke to the guy at her door.

The hateful coil of jealousy reared its head and without another word, and before Maggie could turn back around, I disconnected the call. I quickly logged out of my computer and slammed it closed with a decisive bang. I pulled the plug from the wall and then picked up the laptop and shoved it in my desk drawer as if I could shove away the ugly emotions burning a hole in my gut.

My breath came in painful bursts.

I had come so far. Yet how easy it was for me to lose all of that at the thought of Maggie disappearing forever.

Excerpt

Into the Unknown *Unedited*

“Wow,” Natalia breathed as they reached the top of the peak. She closed her eyes as the cool breeze ghosted against her face. Pine and oak fragranced the air, causing a smile to slide across her face. Opening her eyes, she surveyed the landscape.

Trees spread out for as far as the eye could see. The sun hung low, filling the sky with an orange pink hue. She spun around relishing in the fresh scent and the complete seclusion the trees offered. Crickets chirped and she could hear wildlife scuttling about. “This is amazing,” she said, focusing her gaze on Gene.

“My father worked hard on the landscape back home, but I don’t think it will ever be this secluded.”

“It is nice at your ranch,” Natalia commented. “I grew up in the city anything outside the city limits is rustic to me.”

“And you weren’t around any other wolves?” Gene questioned.

“No. My mother taught me what she knew. Which was not much. Her only experience was with my father, Luis.”

“I meant what I told you. I want to help you – teach you are ways.”

Natalia moved to the edge of the hill and stared down over the edge. Taking the chance and trusting him was about as appealing as jumping to the rocks and brush below. Still, she wanted to believe him.

“How do you do it?”

Swallowing she held her breath as he came to stand next to her. “What?”

“The partial shift. How do you do it?”

Natalia turned to look at him quirking her brow up as he came to stand in front of her. His heels touched the edge of the cliff and she blinked surprised how vulnerable he was allowing himself to be.

Her breath caught in her throat as he placed his hands on her shoulders, his chocolate eyes meeting hers. Her pulse spiked and a shiver ran up her spine as anticipation rolled through her.

“Close your eyes,” he said quietly.

Her eyes widened, heart accelerated and she fought the urge to lean into him. The innocent touch seemed anything but to her.

“You need to focus, close your eyes,” he urged, seemingly oblivious to her discomfort and arousal.

Clearing her throat, she closed her eyes, needing to escape his gaze.

“Now, think about your wolf. Your sight specifically. Imagine you are running. The wildlife and trees are whirling by you as you survey your surroundings. Everything is clearer, sharper. Inhale the pine and oak, the dirt and leaves.”

Natalia forced her breathing to even out, letting his voice guide her as she imagined what he was saying. Warm puffs of air hit her face as he spoke. She let his voice soothe her until she found herself lost in his words.

“Open your eyes, Talia,” Gene said softly.

Fingers grazed her cheeks and gently cupped her face. Startled, she opened her eyes, gasping at their close proximity.

Blinking, she stepped back taking him in. His face appeared clearer, stubble poked out from his pores. Gene’s brown eyes stared at her allowing her to see her goldish eyes reflecting off of them. Turning away from him, she took in the leaves noticing the fine lines of each of them and the tiny insects that gathered on the trunk of a tree.

“All you have to do is focus. How do you feel?” Gene asked.

“Good,” Natalia beamed. In fact, she felt better than she had in weeks.
“If you follow the same mindset when you transition I think it will help. The important thing to remember is you are still in control even if you are the wolf. Embrace who you are don’t fear it.”

“I’m not afraid of-“

“Yes, you are. You’re afraid of what we are because you don’t want to be like Juarez. You can be the wolf and still be yourself,” Gene said. He took a step to the side. “The wolf doesn’t make us do anything we wouldn’t already do. It’s just like with humans there are humans that are just evil. The same rule applies to wolves. There are wolves that are just bad too. On the flip side, there are good humans and wolves. It’s what we do that defines us not what we are.”

Gene sighed as he looked over the edge of the cliff. “I’m heading back. The house is a quarter of a mile that way,” Gene said pointing as he turned in the direction they’d come. “You should try shifting.”

Natalia nodded waiting until she heard the dirt and gravel crunching beneath his feet to turn around. He’d helped her. Swallowing, she watched as he disappeared into the trees. Satisfied she was alone, she undressed and prepared to transition.

 Synopsis

Being dumped just before the holidays was my worst nightmare. I’d spent so many years thinking Preston Wright was the one for me that when he told me it was over, I thought I’d rather die than face the future.

I never expected someone like Judd Kohler to come crashing into my life. Literally. He was coming out. I was going in. My face got in the way. You get the picture. It was an accident. Running into him twice in one day, though? It started to feel like fate.

My mother always says Christmas is a magical time of year. A season for hope. All I know is that just when I thought I’d lost mine, hope somehow found its way back to me.

Just in time for Christmas.

Season of Hope

EXCERPT

“I lean into his hand, my flesh burning under his touch. His fingers twitch slightly, as if he wants to pull me closer.
I want to kiss him, but I’m scared. I don’t want to be rejected again. I don’t want to misunderstand. And I don’t want to fall too fast just because I’m so hungry for something to heal my broken heart.
But I’m helpless to stop it.
When he leans down, he stops short, waiting for me to make a decision. I lift my head ever so slightly and he closes the space between us, his fingers tangling in the hair at the nape of my neck. He takes my mouth more forcefully than he did last night, and my body lights up at the first meeting of our lips.
Our lips open and explore. Our tongues dance, tasting for the first time.
My hands slip around his waist. I’m so aware of the fabric at the edge of his shirt, wanting nothing more than to slide my hand under and up. To feel the warm skin underneath and the hard muscles I know I’ll find along his back.
I want it so badly, I almost can’t control the desire.
He releases my lips and moves his kisses along the line of my chin. When he gets closer to my ear, he whispers, “You’re so beautiful.”
I immediately want to tell him he’s wrong. That he must not see me for some reason. But I hold it in, letting myself hear him. Not quite believing, but for the first time in a long time, wanting to believe.”

The first book in the series, Beautiful Demons, will be adapted into a graphic novel by Sea Lion Books later this year, and a spin-off series will begin in 2014.
