I love to read stories about loss, heartache and redemption so it didn’t shock me when I ended up writing stories of my own revolving around those themes. I write with my heart, using my life experiences and emotions to dictate the tone and path in which my fictional characters embark. I believe in the power of friendship and to always have hope because life is always full of pleasant surprises. If you were to ask me if I consider myself an author, I would tell you no, I am not. Severed Angel is a thrill ride from start to end. The plot contains friendships, enemies, pain, loss, with romance as a wonderful way to relieve stress. The characters come alive on the page. Readers will learn some of the hero and heroines background story. Days and time are easy to follow in the novel. The story line flows and every page is a new experience. The romance is soft and tender. The action is a lip biting and breath holding race of a read. The writing is spot on, very few grammar issues. Characters are clearly presented and represented throughout the novel. Once this reviewer started the read, I could NOT put it down. When it ended, I wanted more, more, MORE!!! I did not want it to end, but keep going, going, GOING!!!

There were parts of this novel in which I really needed my tissues. Painful and shocking moments that happen in the blink of an eye. When you read these areas you will most likely gasp and become saddened, just like the characters do.

Why I Decided To Write A Serial

Serials can be frustrating to some readers. Me personally? What bugs me about them is the waiting time between releases and wondering when the end will come. So I kept that in mind when I launched into Legal Affairs and decided to release them quickly, cheaply and with a definite ending.
I wanted to try a new project, coming off the heels of the Off Series which was very successful. I had a very specific formula in mind… sexy + funny. I also wanted to try my hand at writing a legal themed book since I’m a lawyer by first trade. With this new formula, I thought… “Why not try a serial, where I could make each volume like an episode of ‘must see TV’ where you had a single story line that was actually part of a bigger picture?”
Legal Affairs was soon born of those thoughts. I decided to limit the series to just six volumes, each about 12,000 words or so, with the series finale coming in at just over 17,000 words. I bumped up the heat factor, so beware… this is hotter than the Off Series. I blushed when my mom read it. Blushed again when the lawyers in my firm read it.
Overall, I loved how it turned out. I felt I was able to convey a realistic struggle between the hero and heroine, with each volume having a true conflict that was resolved for that particular story line, but still made you wonder if they would get their HEA in the end.
More than anything, Legal Affairs is a test of sorts. I wanted to see how well I could mesh my knowledge of the law into a steamy romance. My hope is that if Legal Affairs is successful, I will do a full length novel series with a similar theme. Maybe a law firm filled with sexy, quirky lawyers that may be a bit unethical but in the end want justice for their clients. I’ll add in plenty of snark, humor… and oh, yeah… hot sex!! Think of it as Sex In The City meets Ally McBeal.

How Writing A Serial Differs From Writing A Full-Length Novel

I had no idea how to write a serial when I first started Legal Affairs. It takes some planning because you have an overall story line that will result in a resolution with an HEA. But the concept of a serial is to have each volume be its own story within a story. This took even more planning, resulting in charts, graphs and maybe even a Power Point presentation to make myself organized.
My chapters were shorter, thus it became a challenge to create plot points that were clear yet descriptive within a limited budget of words. I also didn’t want to miss out on steaming up the pages with some yummy sex scenes, so I had to budget those in as well.
Overall, this was a unique writing experience. It took more forethought to complete the story, which is different for me as I am a pretty organic writer. It was almost like piecing a puzzle together, but not knowing if I had all of the pieces before me.
I truly enjoyed this writing experience. It enabled me to try out a new concept in a unique fashion. I went out on a limb on this one but I think it turned out marvelously well. I truly hope you enjoy Legal Affairs!!!
Bringing My Real Life Into Fictional Writing

So, I’m a lawyer. A trial lawyer to be exact. I’ve spent the past 16 years arguing my heart out to juries but honestly, it wasn’t that big of a transition to bring my creativity in oral prose to the pages.
I’ve been dying to write a romance with a legal theme floating in the background. Legal Affairs was the perfect opportunity and I have more ideas for future books that revolve around lawyers, hot sex, gooey romance and interesting cases.
In Legal Affairs, I went light on the legal action. This was mainly because each volume has a limited budget of words, but there is a defined case that our heroine, McKayla Dawson handles in this story. It’s an actual case based on one of the very first cases I handled when I was a young lawyer fresh out of law school. The factual details are straight from my own files and it was an amazing trip down memory lane.
One of my biggest challenges as a trial lawyer was getting a jury to step into my client’s shoes… to make them feel in their gut how much my client had been affected. It’s been an incredible journey to make my readers feel an emotional tie to the characters in my stories. When that connection happens, it is beyond awesome.
