Exclusive Chapter 1 Sneak Peek:

CHAPTER ONE

Amy hummed along to the Christmas music as she worked the wire and beads in her hand.  She hated the overzealous songs, but her mind seemed to want to sing along with them anyway. Whatever. She’d be glad when the holiday was over. Christmas was the worst holiday ever. She loved winter though, snow especially.
As if to mock her, the air conditioning blew down on her, sending a cold chill zipping up her spine. At least she could pretend it was winter while in the store. Outside it was in the eighties. Ten years in Hawaii and she still couldn’t get used to the winters—or lack thereof.
“Are you sure you don’t mind locking up?” Celia asked as she strode by, slipping her purse onto her shoulder.
“Yeah. I’m fine,” Amy said, shooing her friend away.
“You know you can come to the ceremony, right?” Celia offered for the billionth time. “Everyone on the island will be there. I’m sure no one will notice if we close an hour early.”
Amy shook her head. “Thanks, but no.”
Celia sighed and came to the counter, leaning over the glass. She reached out and placed a warm hand on top of Amy’s. “You should get out and have fun,” she coaxed. “It’s Christmas and what better way to start off the holiday than watching the tree lighting ceremony. I’m going to a party afterwards, too. When’s the last time you let loose?”
Amy licked her lips and continued to work on the bracelet. She didn’t let loose—ever. Crowds bothered her. Christmas was a horrible reminder of all the bad things that had happened to her. Put the two together and you had a bad combination. “You know that’s not my thing.” God love Celia, but the two of them couldn’t be any more different if they tried.
Celia’s shoulders sagged and she let out an exasperated breath. “If you change your mind…” she trailed off.
“I’ll call,” she promised. Not that she was going to change her mind. She wouldn’t be caught dead in that chaos.
“Everyone is going to be there, including Mason and Rhea,” Celia tried again.
Amy quirked her brow at the mention of her brother, but continued to work on her beading. Mason always grumbled about going to the Christmas functions, but he would do anything to appease his wife and mate, Rhea.
Celia groaned and took a step back. “Still can’t change your mind, huh?”
Amy chuckled and shook her head. Nothing anyone said could make her go to the Christmas tree ceremony. She didn’t care if all of Honolulu was there.  Solitude in the safety of the shop sounded much more appealing.
Celia let out another dramatic huff. “I’ll see you in the morning,” she said defeated.
“Be safe,” Amy said quietly, glancing up at her friend for the first time. Celia was a werewolf like Amy and the rest of their family, but Celia was too careless sometimes.
“I always am.” She grinned as she walked out the door.
The bell chimed loudly, sending a series of dings chirping through the store. Amy stared at the glass opening as it gently slipped closed. Her heart ached as Celia drove off and she closed her eyes. It’d been ten years. She loved that her friend and family hadn’t given up on her, but in some ways she wished they would. She didn’t trust people. The less she was around them the better. At least she wouldn’t have to worry about anyone coming into the shop tonight. The entire city would be downtown. She could work in peace.
Amy returned to her beading. It was one of the only things that calmed her. Out of all the women, she was the only one that made jewelry. She’d gotten good at it through the years.
Her hand reached for a new bead, but none of the ornate purple and white swirls were atop the glass. She sighed, setting her work down on the counter and walked to the back to find another batch of the pretty beads.
The storage area was dark and the light bulb had burned out months ago. Not that it mattered; she closed her eyes, and called upon her inner wolf. Within seconds her eyes flitted into that of a wolf’s. She peered her eyes open. Everything was illuminated, similar to if she were wearing night vision goggles. Being part wolf had its perks.
She shuffled around boxes until she made her way to the shelf that held her supplies. As she was reaching for her beads, a series of dings tolled through the shop. Crap. Who was here?
A series of laughs rung through the front of the store as a few men joked with each other.
“Merry Christmas to us, guys,” a gruff voice called out.
“I bet we can sell this stuff quickly and make a pretty penny, too,” another announced.
“Check the cash register,” another hollered.
Amy swallowed as a lump formed in her throat. No, no, no. Why was this happening? Christmas—that’s why. Her heart pounded against her ribs and her pulse roared in her ears. The hairs on the back of her neck prickled.
Glass shattered and another series of laughs and hollers tore through the silence. Tears pricked her eyes and she covered her mouth to keep from whimpering. Her feet stumbled over a box, causing her to fall against a shelf. Items crashed to the floor. A box of beads erupted, sending the contents bouncing across the storeroom. She winced at the loud noise. Whoever was out there would’ve heard it. Wolves were supposed to be graceful, not klutzy.
Footsteps pounded against the carpet as a few of the intruders flocked to the back. They’re coming. Think. She had to do something. Her limbs were rubbery, refusing to move, and her brain seemed to have stopped working. Like a deer in headlights, she stood, rooted in her spot.
“Well, what do we have here,” a man chuckled as he shone a flashlight in her direction.
As Amy took a step back, her foot slipped out from under her, landing on beads. Her legs flew over her head and she gasped as the wind rushed out of her lungs as her back flopped to the ground. Her head bashed against a shelf and dots blurred her vision. Stay awake. Don’t pass out. God only knows what they’ll do.
Her mishap caused the men to laugh harder. They jogged toward her. Amy flailed, quickly hopping to her feet. Fight back. Don’t let them touch you. Her skin crawled just thinking about their grimy fingers on her flesh.
She snarled, using her quick reflexes to shove the first man away from her. He reeled back, falling on his ass.  Even if her brain was fuzzy, at least her reflexes were kicking in. She knew how to fight all too well. Mason had made sure she could defend herself. There was no reason for her to act like a flake. Terror did funny things to people though. She needed to focus.
Her eyes were still shifted, giving her an advantage. She kicked out with her left foot, catching one of her attacker’s in the jaw. Take that!
“Enough,” a man yelled. A click sounded and Amy froze as a silver barrel was leveled at her face.
This close, it was unlikely he’d miss and he was too far away for her to charge him, not without him firing first. She’d never been shot before and would like to keep it that way.
“Aren’t you a spry thing?” the man said, cocking his head at her. “What’s wrong with your eyes?”
Amy gritted her teeth. Her wolf’s eyes were most likely glowing. Humans didn’t know shifters existed. It was a secret. One she needed to keep.
“Get her and bring her out front,” the man holding the gun instructed to the two she’d attacked.
The two men grumbled beneath their breath as they warily approached her. Amy bit her lip to keep from crying out as the man she’d pushed wrapped an arm around her. She shivered as his beer breath assaulted her sensitive nose. Nausea rolled in her belly and she closed her eyes. Just do what they say until you get an opportunity to fight back.
“Move, bitch,” he instructed, thrusting her forward.
The man she’d kicked reached out, snatching her long, wavy, dirty blonde locks in his hand and wrenching her to him. “You are going to pay for this,” he sneered as he pointed to his bloodied lip.
Amy’s body tensed. How was she going to pay for this? She didn’t want to wait and find out.
Smack! Pain ripped through the side of her face and Amy cried out at the unexpected assault.
“Where is the safe?” the man holding the gun snapped.
Amy blinked. How did he get so close to me? Damn it, she needed to pay better attention. Breathe in and out. Don’t let them fluster you.
Another slap sent her head whirling to the side. Coppery warmth flooded her mouth and she spat blood at the man holding the gun.
The cool metal of the gun pressed against her forehead as the man used his free hand to swipe away the blood spattered across his face. “The safe,” he repeated.
Money wasn’t worth dying over. Maybe they’d take the money and products and leave. She could only hope. “In the office, behind the painting,” she lisped. There wasn’t really anything in there. Catalina had made a trip to the bank before she left for the day. “Just take it and go.”
“She’s seen our faces,” the man holding her acknowledged. His nasty breath puffed against her neck and she shivered, trying to shrink away from him.
“I won’t say anything. I promise,” she said, squeezing her eyes shut.
“That so?” the man in front of her asked as he trailed the gun down to her temple, across her cheek, and rested it on the tip of her chin.
Amy swallowed, unable to open her eyes. “Yes.”
“Such a pretty face,” the man said quietly. “Have your fun with her, then kill her,” he told his counterparts.
Amy’s eyes flew open as a hand groped her right breast. God no! Anything, but that. Panic and anger surged through her. She wouldn’t be a victim again. The man with the gun turned toward the office. Fight back! Now! Her nails lengthened into claws without her calling upon her wolf. She drove her hand back and jammed them into the man’s thigh, raking them up.
He howled, pinching her breast harder. Amy wiggled in his grasp as the gun-toting maniac whirled back to her. His finger curled tighter around the trigger as she flailed, desperate to get free of her captor.
A loud crackle and scream ripped through the air. Oh crap, this was it…

Cooper reached out and placed his hand on her elbow. She shuddered under the contact as her eyes flew to his hand. “We’re going to find him,” he promised even though there was no way of knowing whether he could keep it or not. He removed his hand, wiggling his fingers. Amy’s heat seeped into his body and he fought the urge to touch her satiny skin again. Wasn’t he supposed to be finding out what the hell was going on? He wasn’t doing such a stellar job at it.Amy cleared her throat as she rubbed the spot where his hand had been. Had she been affected by his touch, too?

Catalina collapsed on the ground, kicking dirt up into her face. She coughed and gasped for breath. The agonizing torture that had held her in its clutches the past few moments slipped away. Her vision cleared and she glanced around the tiny clearing.
Bray stood to her right, watching her through narrowed eyes. “Are you okay?” he questioned.
“What happened?” she gasped as she sat up. The breeze blew and she shivered. It was warm out but her sweat soaked body was damp. She glanced down and squeaked, realizing she was completely naked.
Her heart pattered violently against her ribs as she covered herself as best she could.
“Here. Take this.” Bray handed his black tee to her.
Catalina snatched it out of his hands and yanked it over her head. She stood up and tugged the shirt down as low as it would go. It didn’t go far, barely covering her ass.
“What happened?” she demanded as she held the shirt down with one hand and plucked twigs and leaves from her hair with the other.
“What do you think happened?” he challenged.
She snorted and shot him a glare. “You tell me.”
Bray nodded and reached out for her. She jerked away, and he held his hands up in surrender. “We can talk, but not here. We’re too exposed. If someone comes looking for you and they find us like this…” he trailed off as his eyes swooped up and down her scantily clad body…

Synopsis

Astrid loves her new life in Tuscany. She is free from the restrictive boundaries of pack life and able to make her own choices. When her alpha’s brother moves into the flat next to hers, it sets a series of events into place that will change her life forever. Should she flee or face her enemy?

Kendrick can’t believe it when he runs into Astrid in Tuscany. The fiery wolf has always held a special place in his heart. Can he prove to her that he’s different than his brother? Or will he lose her forever?

Excerpt

Astrid sprinted through her house like a mad woman. She was running late, of course, when wasn’t she running late? She overslept all the time. It was the insomnia. Wolves were nocturnal and no matter how much her human half wanted to go to bed, the animal within almost always refused. Hence why she was running late for the third day in a row.

Frazzled, she pulled her long hair up into a messy bun.  Satisfied she no longer looked like she’d just rolled out of bed, she pulled on her cardigan. Grabbing her car keys, she rushed out the door. Her boss was nice and not too strict, but she still liked to be on time. The quaint little café she worked at was a tourist hot spot, and she met all sorts of interesting people. By no means was it a glamorous job, but it paid the bills and she enjoyed it.

Rushing out to her car, she fumbled through her keys for the unlock button. She was so caught up that she didn’t see the approaching man until it was too late. Astrid ducked to the right, but not fast enough. Her chest collided with something solid. The breath whooshed out of her as she connected against a firm hard torso. Her car keys flew out of her hands falling a few feet away on the sidewalk. “I’m so sorry,” she gasped as she bent down to retrieve her keys.

“My apologies too. It’s not every day I get the pleasure of running into such a…” he trailed off as she stood up and their gazes met.

“Oh my God,” Astrid muttered as she stared into Kendrick Johnson’s brown eyes. Horror filled her as a million questions raced through her mind. The most important one being, what the hell was he doing here? While Kendrick had never personally done anything to her, it was his brother she was running from.

“This is an interesting development,” Kendrick smirked at her. He winked at her. “Oh and most people call me Kendrick, but I could be your God.”

“What are you doing here?” Astrid glared. Why was he here? At her flat? It couldn’t be a coincidence could it? Of course not. He was here on his brother’s behalf. Here to bring her back kicking and screaming to Killian. No. That didn’t seem right. Kendrick and Killian weren’t exactly close. Or they hadn’t been when she’d left. Had something changed? If memory served, Kendrick wasn’t too popular with anyone in his family. Maybe her cover wasn’t blown after all. She could only hope.

“Well as a matter of fact I am staying in my flat,” Kendrick said indicating her absent neighbors home.

“That is yours?” she stammered as she stared up at the large flat. Impossible. How could she have been living next to Killian’s brother and not have known it?

“It is,” Kendrick beamed. His amber eyes danced with mirth. He’s enjoying this. “It looks like you and I are going to be neighbors. This little trip is getting better by the minute,” he continued excitedly.

“Well this is just perfect. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m running late for work,” Astrid flustered, glaring at him for a long moment before darting towards her little blue car.

“I suppose I’ll be seeing you around,” Kendrick called after her.

“I’d really prefer if we didn’t,” Astrid hollered back over her shoulder. She climbed into her car and quickly locked the doors. Jamming her key into the ignition, she shifted into drive, and mashed her foot down on the accelerator. What was she going to do now? Was Kendrick here for her? Or did he have his own agenda? Damn it, she was just starting to like Tuscany too.

She chanced a glance in her rearview mirror. No one was there. Gripping the wheel tighter, she took in her surroundings. Everything appeared to be normal. Maybe running into Kendrick was a freak occurrence. Maybe she didn’t have to leave. Astrid turned down the road to work. The first thing she saw out of the ordinary, she was hightailing it out of Tuscany.

Goodreads Reviews

Another great story from Bethany Shaw, I have read a lot of this authors books and she never disappoints. This was a nice short story. Quick read but had me hooked from the start. I loved the characters and was happy they got their HEA. I’m anxious to read the next book in this series to see what she comes up with next. I was given an ARC for a fair and honest review.
~*~
Received this as a free arc in exchange for an honest review. It was a little to short for my taste. But it left you hanging at the end wanting more. And wondering what is going to happen to them and the pack they are on the run from. Can’t wait to read more from this author and this series.
~*~
A beautiful quick read. Astrid never thought she,d love the brother of th cruel alpha she was running from.
Little did she know the brother was also on the run. After saving her life she comes to believe he may not be the enemy after all.
They fall in love and live HEA.
I loved it perfect for a quick cold winter afternoon read. I loved it.

Hunter Excerpt

Excerpt 1

Nate pulled off at an exit. It was nearly three in the morning. He was exhausted, hungry, and needed a break from the endless darkness of the freeway. He scanned the rearview mirror, ensuring no one was behind him. The road was dark and vacant. It had been for miles, but he had to check to be sure. Better safe than sorry.

He didn’t want to stop for a long time. There was no doubt in his mind that they were being pursued. As long as they kept moving, they should be okay. Although, he swore at times that the Hunters had supernatural tracking abilities. It was the only thing that could explain how they found shifters sometimes.

Nate drove up to a twenty-four hour Taco Bell and came to a stop just short of the drive thru. He looked over at his passenger. Tess was sound asleep. Her long hair draped over her face like a curtain. He took a moment to appreciate the soft rise and fall of her chest that accented the swell of her breast. She truly was magnificent.

Reaching out, he tucked loose strands of hair behind her ear, letting his finger trail down her silky cheek. Tess stirred, her eyes fluttering for a moment as she leaned into his touch. What am I doing, he wondered as her breathing evened. She’s a werecat, and I’m a wolf, any feelings I have are forbidden, he reminded himself again. Why do I have to keep reminding myself to keep my hands off her? I need to find a wolf when I get home and get the whole mating process over. At least that way if she comes back, I won’t have to worry about whatever this is.

He moved his hand away from her, instantly missing the contact. Wake her up and ask her if she’s hungry. How hard is that? His hand reached out for her again, but he jerked it back. No. Don’t touch her. Say her name. Do something, but for the love of God don’t touch her.

     “Tess,” he said huskily.

“Hmmm,” she murmured as she sat up with a yawn. Her eyes blinked open a small smile pulling at her lips as she met his gaze.

He cleared his throat. Don’t make eye contact. “I was going to get something to eat. Do you want anything?” he asked, pointing to the empty drive thru.

Tess squinted at him for a moment as she slowly took in their surroundings. “Oh. Yeah. Sure,” she mumbled as she yawned again. “Where are we?”

“Ohio. Just crossed over the border. Thought we could get a quick bite and I’ll need some more specifics from you about where we’re going,” Nate explained.

“I have the coordinates. We are going just outside of Cincinnati. We shouldn’t be too far from it,” she sighed. “Are we being followed?”

“Not that I can tell. The roads been empty behind us for some time.” He pulled out his cell phone and opened up his Google maps app. “Here. Why don’t you put in the coordinates and I’ll order us some food. Want anything in particular?”

Tess squinted and then wrinkled her nose. “Taco Bell?”

He shrugged. It sounded good to him.

“A couple beef tacos,” she mumbled as she took his phone.

Her slender fingers grazed against his and he closed his eyes, trying to ignore the electricity rippling through his hand from the touch. He shook his head and pulled forward through the drive thru.

“Can I help you?” a male voice crackled over the intercom.

“Five beef tacos.” He’d eat what she didn’t since she hadn’t given a number. Surely she was starved too. “A burrito supreme, chili cheese burrito, two chicken tacos, and two Pepsi’s.”

“Hungry?” Tess asked, arching her brow.

“Yes,” he grinned. Anytime he transitioned, he always burned a ton of calories, and he needed to replace them. It was like that for all werewolves. He wondered if the same were true for werecats. Surely they had similarities as much as they did differences.

“According to this we’ll reach the pride in about thirty minutes,” Tess said, drawing him out of his thoughts.

Wow. They were close. He dug his wallet out and drove to the window, passing a card to the attendant. She promptly swiped it and handed the card and food over. The scent of cheap taco meat filled the car, and he inhaled greedily. His stomach rumbled as his mouth salivated. I can’t wait to dig into my burrito. Nate set the bag between them and drinks in the cup holder.

“Hop back on the highway,” she instructed.

“Got it,” he replied as he unwrapped a burrito. He took a large bite out of his food and swallowed it.

Tess set the phone down on her knee and let out a long breath. She ran a hand through her hair before picking up a taco from the bag.

“I’m sure it will be okay,” he tried to assure. “I’m not dead yet,” he teased around another bite.

She gave him a small smile before taking a nibble out of her food. “It’s not so bad,” she commented as she lifted her soda up and took a sip from the straw. “I just want to get to the pride. My family… we were close. It would be nice to know they’re okay—that they made it out. It makes me sick to think of what might have happened.”

His own stomach twisted at the thought. He’d seen what hunters did to those they captured, and it wasn’t pretty. After they’d tortured them for information they killed them and then burned the village and all of its occupants. If he had a quarter for all the forest fires hunters had started he’d be rich. Not only were they destroying shifters, but they were harming natural wildlife too. It was disgusting.

“You’ll be safe there,” Tess commented drawing him from his thoughts.

“Your prides let go of the feud?” he asked curiously. The wolves certainly hadn’t. You’d think it happened yesterday.

Tess set her food down on the wrapper. “You don’t know what really happened do you?”

Nate took a sip of his drink and looked at her. He knew the story his mother had told him. Given her hatred, he was beginning to wonder how accurate it was. Anger and racism could blind you from the truth. What if he had it all wrong? What if the wolves were spreading stories to keep the werecats at bay? But why?

“The story I’ve always been told is that a community of werecats and werewolves lived within thirty miles of each other. They were working together to stop an attack from the Hunters.  During a mission, a male werecat raped a female werewolf. The werecats refused to bring him to justice and when the Hunters attacked the werewolf pack, the cats never came to help. A lot of wolves died in that attack, including my grandma’s sister and younger brother,” he summarized. His mom had given a much more detailed account, but he didn’t see the need to retell it to Tess.

Tess clucked her tongue and pursed her lips. “Um. No.”

     “No?” he questioned.

“That’s not what happened,” she stated.

“I’ll admit my story could be wrong—”

     “It is,” she interrupted adamantly.

“And you know this how?” he asked. “You weren’t there.”

“Neither were you,” she countered. “I’ve seen the evidence to support the werecats side.”
“From a feud that’s lasted decades? How?” he asked skeptically. She was full of it now. There was no way she could know what had transpired all those years ago.

“First of all, the wolf and the cat weren’t in a relationship. They were good friends. The pack only assumed they were having an affair, and made up the story about the rape because they couldn’t stand the idea of an interspecies relationship, and wanted to make sure no one else got any ideas. And to make sure that there was a rift between the two species. Prior to the attack on the pack, the pride was under siege. There was no one to come to the packs aide because the pride had been destroyed. By the time the pride survivors made it there the pack had been desolated, and any survivors had fled.”

“You don’t know the truth behind your story anymore than I do behind mine,” he remarked.

She lifted her brow, silently challenging him. “Actually, I do. There were thirteen survivors from the pride. The werecat and wolf being two of them. He had family on the west coast, and he brought her there too. They joined a pride in Washington State, the same pride that I grew up in.”

Nate did a double take. Her eyes held his and her jaw was set firmly in place. She was serious. Is that what had happened? Why would she lie? Why would the wolves lie? What was the point in holding onto a feud for generations? To keep different species from mating. That seemed a little farfetched, or did it? Even now, interspecies mingling between different genders were strongly discouraged. There was the occasional hookup, but same species didn’t truly mate most of the time, sure they could still procreate, but there was a difference between finding your true mate and mating out of obligation to duty. Why would anyone think that two different species could truly mate, let alone have children? Was that even possible? Probably not. How would that even work?

“Wow,” he stated unsure what else to say. What could he say? “And your not just yanking my chain?” he asked.

     She shook her head. “No.”
“Why would the wolves lie? What do they gain from carrying on the feud with the werecats? Sanctuary needs as much help as it can get,” he thought aloud. It didn’t make sense.

Tess looked away and out the window. “I’m sure they have their reasons,” she said after a long moment. “It’s possible that they really believe that’s what happened too. I mean, the pack was destroyed except for a few. If the one’s who made up the lie all perished, then there would be no one to set the story straight.”

Could what she said be true? Questions whirled through his mind. If what she said were true, then they needed to figure out a way to get the truth out there. That was the only way the feud would ever end—at least for the wolves. He opened his mouth to speak, but the GPS spoke first instructing them to take the next exit.

Tess squirmed in her seat, squinting to see in the darkness. There was no way she was going to talk to him now. She was too worried about her family. Not that he could blame her. Later. We’ll talk about it later, he promised himself.

Tess tells it

Excerpt 2

Nate opened the door for Tess as he led her into the TV room. He smiled and motioned to the large couch. She took a seat and got comfortable.

He picked up the remote and eased down onto the opposite end of the couch. As much as he’d like to sit close to her, Tess’ perfume was intoxicating. He could be easily overwhelmed with desire for the werecat. Better to watch the movie at a distance. With the click of a few buttons, he brought up the red Netflix screen.

“You did it,” she laughed as she shifted so she could look at him.

“It took a little work.” Liar. You spent the better part of the afternoon rerouting wires and fiddling around with this. He handed the remote over to her. “Ladies choice.”

She leaned forward, her fingers grazing over his as she accepted the controller. He gritted his teeth as heat engulfed him. His cock hardened at her touch and his wolf roared to life, ready to claim her. He inhaled sharply. The desire for her seemed to be getting worse. Would it be so bad to give in? He could get her out of his system and then he could mate with a nice wolf in a few weeks. Would she be open to the idea? If they both agreed to a fling with no strings attached, it could work. No. He groaned inwardly. One night with Tess wouldn’t be enough. I still want her.

“I suppose I should spare you the sappy romance,” she teased, drawing him from his thoughts.

What did she say? Think. Romance. Right. “You don’t strike me as the type of girl who likes those,” he replied.

“I could go for a good action flick,” she agreed. “How do I do this exactly?” she asked looking down at the remote.

He scooted closer, his shoulder bumping against hers. His length throbbed against the restriction of his pants. She looked up at him, and her breath caught in her throat. He watched as her tongue darted out to wet her lips. So close—so beautiful. I want to taste her. I need to. Make a move.

“How do I…” she trailed off, locking gazes with him. “Nate.”

He growled low in his throat, enjoying the sultry way his name rolled off her tongue. “Tess.” He reached up and brushed strands of hair from her face. The silky locks slid through his fingers.

When she didn’t recoil, he moved closer, cupping her face with his free hand. His thumb traced tiny circles over her smooth cheek.

“Your pack won’t approve,” she spoke quietly.

“I don’t care what they think,” he answered honestly. He didn’t care. For years, he’d been following laws that made no sense to him. It didn’t bother him to break rules that he didn’t believe in. Tess was… there were no words to describe whatever was happening between them. The urge to claim her, to take her was driving him insane. He had to have her. Now.

Tess bit her lip, seemingly unconvinced.

Nate brushed a finger over her soft, plump lips. “They don’t have to know. It can be just tonight. No strings.” I’m such a liar. There is no way one night will be enough. We can sort that out in the morning. Maybe she feels the same.

Tess nodded with a sigh. Needing no further encouragement, he leaned in pressing his mouth to hers. Her lips were softer than he imagined. They were so full, and they moved harmoniously against his. More. I need to feel every inch of her silky skin.

He growled, pulling her closer, needing to feel her plush body pressed against his. Her mouth parted, and he slipped his tongue into her mouth, exploring every inch that she allowed him to.

Tess gripped his shoulders and shoved him back. He frowned momentarily confused until she slid one of her lithe legs over his waist and straddled him. Her lips found his again. The light kisses quickly changed to heated nips and feverish clashing of tongues. Their teeth gnashed together as they both fought for control. Her nails dug deliciously into his shoulders, marking him as hers. He reveled at the thought as the urge to make her his filled him.

He gripped her waist firmly, lifted her, and then laid himself over her on the couch. Tess mewed beneath him, her hands raking up and down his back, lifting the hem of his shirt up, and over his head.

Yes. I need more. I need her. Claim her.

I couldn’t put the book down. I actually stopped studying so could finish it. Nate and Tess are awesome. If you love reading about shifters then you will need to add this to your book list. I give it 5 out of 5. Bethany Shaw is great and I can’t wait for the next books.

This is the first book in a new shifter series with each story with its own HEA but with a continuing storyline. This story starts off with Tess, a Werecat, wounded and running for her life. She is being hunted by The Hunters, who hate all shifters and she stumbles into a bar being ran by a half shifter. Nate, a werewolf, is determined to help her even though there is a long standing feud between the two. Nate takes her to Sanctuary, a place were different species gather to hide from the world, but Tess is not welcomed because of what she is. Tess just wants to find her family while Nate just wants to save her. These two have an instant attraction but Nate knows his pack will not accept her and Tess knows this also. When the two leave to find Tess’ family there is trouble and Tess and Nate are forced to take shelter where the attraction comes ahead. They soon learn that they are true mates and this can and will lead to problems. When Nate’s sister is taken by the hunters, we learn there is a traitor in their mist. Will Tess and Nate have their HEA and will the find his siter before something bad happens?

I was given a copy of this book for a honest review…

Okay to be honest I don’t give very many reviews because I feel that I cannot be objective enough to express my opinion regardless of whether or not I liked the book. Every once in awhile though a book will be brought to my attention with an intriguing story line and engaging characters, Bethany Shaw’s Sanctuary just so happens to be one of these books!

This was my first book by Ms. Shaw and it was truly an awesome read, I’ve always loved shifter novels and her’s was no exception. It had to be one of the best shifter stories I’ve read in a while!
after my literary journey with Tess and Nate I found myself wishing for their happily ever after, They deserve it! I thought.

The emotions the author expressed in the story seem to leap out and wrap themselves around the reader, especially during scenes of suspense, there was a tenseness in some of the scenes that you could easily feel. Similar to when you watch a suspenseful movie and find yourself thinking Be careful guys!

The first chapter does a nice job of grabbing your attention from the very start, you can very easily feel Tess’ emotions; her pain and fear, it’s these emotions that keep you reading!

Hunted Synopsis

Tess Monroe is a werecat on the run. Pursued by Hunters, an elite group of humans tasked with extinguishing the entire shifter species, Tess stumbles upon a safe haven. Due to a long-standing feud, she receives an icy reception. Determined to reunite with her loved ones, she accepts the help of, Nate, a werewolf. The attraction to Nate is instantaneous, and Tess trusts him despite his packs archaic beliefs and traditions.

Werecats can’t be trusted. They are the enemy. That’s the motto Nate Tucker grew up with, but when he meets Tess, he can’t help feeling protective of the beautiful feline. He knows he shouldn’t care about her, and he shouldn’t be attracted to her, let alone desire her, but the feelings are undeniable. Tasked with escorting her to a nearby pride, Nate must fight his passion for Tess. An interspecies romance is forbidden. But as they unravel secrets from the past and discover new threats, a taboo romance is the least of their concerns.

Hunter Excerpt

Special Sneak Peek into Chapter 1

Tess stepped into the bar. It was louder than the night before. Every seat at the bar was full and only a few tables were open. Her eyes immediately found Eden. Xander was talking to her, and the waitress seemed relaxed.
“Is that the guy from last night?” Nate asked. His breath tickled her neck as he leaned into her.
Tess shivered at his close proximity wanting to both move away and closer at the same time. Nate reached over her and pointed to the far right corner. His arm rested against her shoulder, causing a delicious friction. She ignored the heat building in her and followed his finger.
“Yes,” she answered as soon as her eyes fell on the greasy haired man. The creep was openly staring at Xander and Eden. His interest in them was unnatural. He was completely fixated on the pair, and gross, he was drooling.
“He definitely looks like someone we need to keep our eye on,” Nate growled.
“Yeah,” Tess agreed, turning to Nate. Her breath caught as she realized how close he actually was. His lips were mere inches from hers. Her chest grazed against his, causing her nipples to harden. He feels good.
Thankfully, Nate seemed unaware of their proximity. He watched his sister for a long moment before focusing on Tess. He swallowed thickly before averting his gaze. “Come on, let’s get a table. I think Xander has this covered for the moment.”
Nate’s hand fell to her lower back. Tess instinctually leaned into him as he guided them to a table. He paused at the first chair and pulled it out, motioning for her to sit. A smile slid across her face at the action. It was cute.
“You hungry?” Nate asked as he pulled a menu out from between the napkins and the wall. “I interrupted your dinner. It’s my treat.”
Tess licked her lips. The bacon burger she’d had last night had been delicious. “Sure.”
Nate raised his hand up and motioned for Eden to come to their table.
Eden beamed as she approached, placing a hand on Tess’ shoulder. “I’m glad to see you’re okay. How do you feel?” she asked with a gentle squeeze.
“Much better. Thank you for helping me out,” Tess responded genuinely. If Eden hadn’t of acted she could be dead, or worse in a hospital undergoing countless tests because of her uniquegenetic makeup.
“Good,” Eden grinned. “You want the same thing as last night or do you want to try something new?”
“Hmmm,” Tess thought out loud as she browsed the menu. “I think I’ll try the black and bleu burger tonight. And can I get a Coke with that?”
“Sure thing. That’s my favorite burger,” Eden admitted. “I’ll put that in and get it right out to you.”
“You’re not going to ask what I want?” Nate asked, setting his menu down.
Eden rolled her eyes and shook her head. “No. You always order the same thing.”
Nate tucked the menu back away. “I guess I’ll try something different next time.”
“Right,” Eden scoffed. “I’ll be back in a few.”
“Hey,” Nate said, clasping Eden’s wrist in his hand. “Everything okay?”
Eden nodded as her eyes darted to the bar then back to her brother. “Yeah. Xander has it taken care of.”
“All right,” Nate exhaled. “I’m right here if you need me.”
Tess watched as Eden hurried back to the counter to put in their order. Eden patted Xander’s shoulder as she slipped past him.
“Does your pack take into account love?” Tess asked.
“You think they are in love?” Nate frowned.
“Sure. Why not? Look at them. He’s over protective of her. They can’t take their eyes off each other. I imagine they think about each other constantly. And I think she eluded to something last night,” Tess explained.
“It doesn’t matter,” Nate said. He slammed his fist down on the table. The salt and pepper shakers clanked together, rattling against each other before tipping over. A sprinkle of black pepper puffed out onto the table. “Even if they were soul mates, which there hasn’t been a true soul mate pairing in my lifetime, I don’t think anyone on the council would care.”
Tess wriggled her nose as the pepper assaulted her senses. She covered her mouth, sneezing several times before the offensive smell left. She cocked her brow in question as Nate bristled in his seat. Why was he so mad? Did the rules affect him in some way too?
“Sorry,” he sighed, righting the condiments. “All pack members must choose a suitable mate by the first full moon after they turn twenty-five.”
Tess’ brows dipped down into a scowl. “That’s ridiculous.” It was absurd. What rock did these people crawl out of? It was the twenty first century for crying out loud.
“The way our enemies pick us off, it’s important that we continue the blood lines from an early age,” he explained.
“I’m guessing Xander’s birthday is soon?” she inquired.
“Two weeks.”
“Oh,” she whispered.
“Yeah.”
Tess turned back to watch the pair at the bar. Eden’s eyes lit up as she spoke to the wolf. Her hand reached out, taking Xander’s calloused fingers into hers. The movements were effortless, thoughtless, but it was obvious they both needed the touch.
A warm hand landed on top of hers. Warmth crept up her arm and heat pooled in her belly. Her fingers entwined with Nate’s before she could think better of it.
“Try not to think about it too much. I’m sure they’ll both move on.” He squeezed her hand, allowing it to linger on hers.
The gesture was nice. Too nice. Crap. No. No. No. He is a wolf. You can’t allow anything to happen between the two of you. It would start a war. His parents would kill him, and you. Crap.
