Excerpt

CHAPTER ONE

Chloe Bennett eyed the blinking red light on the desk. The nurse’s call bell barked incessantly, chopping through the silence of the night.

“There’s no way I’m going back in there!” Susan, another nurse, declared. She planted a hand on her hip. “That patient has been on the bell all night long! It’s two in the morning for God’s sake!”

Chloe issued a sigh and rose from her seat in front of the charts she’d been working on. Her gaze traveled down the dark hall that tunneled off from the nurse’s station. Usually at this time of night, most of the patients were asleep and all that would be heard was the intermittent beep of a cardiac monitor or the deep snore of a restless sleeper. Now in the distance, she could see a light wink on and off over Mr. Barkley’s door. He was an elderly patient who’d been admitted for heart monitoring. The red light flashed in rhythm to the noise bullying the quiet night, demanding attention once again.

“I’ll go. I think he’s just confused.”

“I’ll say he’s confused. He thinks my ass is a squeezy toy!” Susan bristled.

“Poor Mr. Barkley is not himself tonight. He seems more disoriented than ever.” Chloe chewed pensively on her bottom lip. The hairs on the back of her neck stood at attention as her gaze lingered down the hall.

She brushed her palms across the front of her white nurse’s uniform and made her way to his room, her sturdy shoes thudding on the laminate tiles.

Mr. Barkley’s mental status waxed and waned. For a few days he’d been extremely lucid, then his mind slipped between pleasant dementia and foggy reality. Even then, there were times Chloe swore she saw a bead of clarity rolling in his cloudy blue eyes. The bead seemed to condense all the wisdom and knowledge that his eighty-five year old brain had accumulated, and Chloe loved his convoluted stories. Imbedded in those stories was a richness of experience, and the contentment of a life lived well. She’d miss him after he was discharged. Though Mr. Barkley often became overly zealous with the nurses, he was rarely agitated.

She frowned, a strange feeling of déjà vu plaguing her. Just two weeks ago, she’d had another patient who’d exhibited the same behavior: acute confusion and agitation. She’d mentioned it to her nursing supervisor, but Nurse Wall hadn’t thought much of it because many of the elderly patients had some baseline dementia. But Chloe knew Mr. Barkley well and tonight he just seemed…off.

She pushed open the door to the small room and entered, her heart clenching as she heard Mr. Barkley’s raspy voice yelling in the dark.

“Shhh, it’s okay, Mr. Barkley. It’s okay.” She flipped on the soft overhead light and walked swiftly to his bed, something deep inside her responding to the neediness in his voice.

“Who is it? Who…who’s there?” Mr. Barkley asked, his voice jumping with agitation.

“Shhh, it’s okay. It’s me, Chloe, your nurse.”

She watched as his bushy white brows pulled together. “Thanks for coming to the beach with me. I just fell off my surfboard. I hate when the waves are so rough.”

Chloe smiled warmly and placed a hand on Mr. Barkley’s shoulder. “You’re not at the beach, Mr. Barkley.”

She brushed back a strand of paper thin, white hair that had fallen over his eyes, thinking wryly that he’d probably been having a good time surfing in his head before his imagined fall. A red cast glazed his eyes, and she wondered if he’d been rubbing them.

“Mr. Barkley, you’re at the hospital. You’re at Washington Memorial Hospital.”

His mind seemed to clear as he bounced his gaze around the room. “Hmmm…yeah. Those waves were rough. Mom told me not to go in today. She wanted me to stay home. She’s waiting for me. I have to go with her.”

Chloe sighed and tried to reorient him, hoping to nudge him back to the present.

“So,” she announced with a big smile. “Tomorrow you’ll be returning home!” She eyed the IV bag quickly dripping into the clear tube snaking into his arm.

Mr. Barkley pursed his thin lips as his eyes filled with alarm. “No, I won’t. They won’t let me.”

She smiled gently, her eyes returning to his restless blue gaze. “Yes. I got your discharge papers today. Your granddaughter is coming to get you in the morning. It’ll be a wonderful day.”

Chloe flinched as his gnarled hand suddenly grasped her arm, jerking it to a stop as she was about to check the flow of the IV.

“I won’t be going home! They won’t let me leave here! I know they won’t!” Mr. Barkley was almost shouting now, his hand clutching tighter, his jagged nails biting into her skin. His eyes became wild and panicked like a cornered animal.

She softened her voice, trying not to react to his acute distress. If Mr. Barkley saw that she was upset, it might make him more agitated. Instead, she smiled and placed her other hand comfortingly over the one that had a painful grip on her.

“Let’s not think about that now, okay? You should really get some rest.” She looked around and whispered, “You need to keep up your strength for surfing.”

At that, Mr. Barkley’s eyes fogged over and he relaxed his hold on her arm. A dreamy smile pulled at the corner of his lips.

Chloe smiled again, her heart tugging in her chest. She barely noticed the tiny half-moons his nails had embedded in the pale skin of her forearm.

Her gaze landed on his blanket that had fallen on the floor, and she turned to pick it up, almost jumping out of her skin when she felt a firm pinch of her rear end.

“Mr. Barkley!” She turned and waggled an admonishing finger at the elderly man, but her annoyance lost its fervor as she watched a sly smile spread across his lips.

Demented, my ass!

She talked to him while she straightened the cluttered space, telling him how wonderful life would be at home. Mr. Barkley was an active eighty-five year old. From what his family had told her, he loved taking daily walks in the park with his granddaughter, singing old tunes, and going out to the movies.

She folded the blanket into a small square and was about to lay it at his feet when her gaze landed on Mr. Barkley’s face. For a second she stood stock still, her brain fighting with the fear in her accelerating heart.

“Mr. Barkley!” she yelled. When she got no response, she screamed his name even louder. Rushing forward, she placed a palm on his shoulder and shook him roughly, already tasting the bitter dread leaking onto her tongue.

Mr. Barkley’s face was turning a pasty white and the wrinkles in his skin seemed to press flat. One look at his still chest told her his lungs had abandoned their function and he wasn’t breathing. Chloe’s heart bang against her ribcage as she dug a finger into his neck to search for his carotid pulse. Not finding one, she opened her mouth and screamed a Code Blue alarm at the top of her lungs, the sound reverberating through the dark corridors like an agonizing cry.

Code blue! Code blue! Room 405!”

Willing her trembling hands to work, she initiated CPR, trying to suppress the tears stinging the back of her eyes. She saw a tinge of blue cling to her patient’s lips and horror gripped her heart. In seconds the room filled with people. Footsteps were heard running down the previously quiet hall. Sleepy doctors in blue scrubs filed quickly through the door, shouting in her direction, asking questions, and demanding answers.

Someone pushed her aside and took over doing chest compressions while another person pulled Mr. Barkley’s gown away and started attaching colorful wires to his pale, clammy skin. Again Chloe had to step back as medical equipment, a crash cart, the Code Blue team, and young doctors in training flowed towards the bed in a ceaseless wave of bodies.

One doctor yelled. “How old is this man?”

The question was thrown at Chloe. She blinked rapidly, linking her fingers behind her back to stop her shaking. She felt so cold.

“He…he’s eighty-five,” she replied.

“Are you sure he wants to be resuscitated?”

“Does he have signed orders?” It was her nursing supervisor, Nurse Wall. She skewered Chloe with a beady gaze.

Chloe’s head shot up and she stuttered. “Yes…yes. I mean, no…no. He wants everything done. He wants to be resuscitated!” she answered, hating the quiver in her voice. She started attaching the colorful leads of the heart monitor to his chest.

Just then, she saw Susan rush into the room. She handed off some extra supplies, tossed her a sympathetic gaze, and then scurried away, presumably to check on the other patients.

“Tell me about this patient!” A voice was directed at her. It was Dr. Wasko, the doctor who’d taken charge.

Chloe almost bit through her bottom lip, but she took a deep breath and relayed Mr. Barkley’s medical information. She watched in a robotic state of shock as the team worked on Mr. Barkley’s lifeless body. A large liter bag of saline was thrust at her, and she set it up to flow openly into her patient’s IV. She glanced at the noisy monitor failing to get a blood pressure reading, and the flat line on the cardiac screen. Someone continued compressions, while another person pulled his jaws wide and inserted a breathing tube into his throat. Mr. Barkley’s pale body seemed so puny, unresponsive and crowded with busy hands and medical devices.

Adept fingers pierce his groin with a long, ferocious-looking needle, drawing back dark red blood from his artery. Chloe’s stomach twisted and turned as she began to lose faith. The room was a swirling frenzy of chaotic order and the air was stale and oppressive. Doctors shouted orders, medications were handed over, and monitors beeped urgently. Someone yelled “Clear!” and everyone stepped back from the bed. Chloe watched as paddles discharged on Mr. Barkley’s chest and his inert body flopped like a fish. She felt an arm slip around her shoulder and she turned her head as Susan leaned in.

“You okay? It doesn’t look good.”

Chloe nodded, but swiped at a tear threatening to fall.

“Are the other patients okay?” she asked weakly.

“Yeah. A little shaken up. They can hear what’s going on, but we’re keeping things calm.”

Chloe saw a movement from the corner by the bathroom. One of the new phlebotomists, Nigel, moved toward the door. He shot her a dazed look, then sadly shook his head, his mouth pulling downward. Her attention was drawn away when Susan leaned in.

“I heard that Dr. Markson’s been called. He should be here any minute now. He’s just getting out of surgery.” She informed nervously.

Chloe gasped, her eyes growing wide. She felt her heart rate rev as Susan gave her hand a quick squeeze. Dr. Markson was one of Washington Memorial’s finest cardiac surgeons. He was lauded for making great advances in cardiac surgery at his young age, and was renowned for his expertise in Robotic Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery. He was almost a deity at the hospital. From what Chloe had heard, his colossal ego was the only thing that surpassed his reputed glory. She’d never had the opportunity, thank God, to meet him. Her night shift ended at seven in the morning, just before the surgeons rounded on their patients. She did, however, see the nurses of the oncoming shift sweat nervously whenever they got slated with a patient of his.

“I’m going back outside. You need anything?” Susan asked.

Chloe shook her head, her eyes glued to the activity on the bed. She watched numbly as the doctor in charge stepped back from Mr. Barkley’s body, shaking his head gravely. A single tear meandered down her cheek. Oh, God…

She braced herself as Dr. Wasko’s mouth open, ready to pronounce her patient dead. She was just issuing a prayer when a large shadow filled the doorway, distracting her morbid thoughts.

“What the hell is going on here?” The booming voice stirred the air in the room, causing all noise to cease.

Chloe took a step back as the large looming figure stalked quickly to the bed. She held her breath as she watched a man, who could be none other than Dr. Markson, part the sea of bodies to stand over Mr. Barkley. He was yelling now, his voice belting like thunder as he demanded answers. The chiseled lines of his face pull taut as a storm swirled in his dark blue eyes. He shoved aside one doctor and his powerful arms locked tight as he started aggressively pounding on Mr. Barkley’s flaccid body in an attempt to resuscitate him.

He yelled for medications in the process, growling a nasty curse as one doctor’s shaky hands tarried. Chloe didn’t know why, but as she watched determination sculpt the lines of Dr. Markson’s face, hope started to blossom. Her eyes widened as the cardiac monitor flickered, the staccato beat jostling the glowing flat line, causing doubtful gazes to latch on to it hopefully. For long moments, Dr. Markson worked furiously, but the stubborn line kept lying flat, refusing to jump to life.

Suddenly Dr. Wasko stepped forward, his hand snaking out to stop Dr. Markson’s unrelenting pounding.

“Brad,” he said gently. “Brad!” He raised his voice when he got no response. “Brad! Stop. He’s dead! You have to pronounce him.”

Chloe’s lungs fought to take a breath. She felt as if everyone in the room was afraid to breathe, as absolute quiet settled around them like heavy fog. It seemed even the machines felt the tautness of the moment and had paused their blinking and beeping.

Dr. Wasko inhaled deeply and sighed. “Brad. It’s over. He was an old man. His heart gave out.”

Chloe watched Dr. Markson’s head snap up. His jaw squared angrily and a fist flew through the air. A collective gasp whooshed around the room like liquid swirling in a glass. Chloe’s hand clapped over her mouth in disbelief. Dr. Wasko ducked, but could not avoid the impact of the glancing blow, and his head snapped to the side. Another doctor rushed over to hold Dr. Markson, but just as quickly as he’d ignited, Dr. Markson seemed to calm, and the other man steered clear.

Christ, Brad!” Dr. Wasko shook his head, his eyes narrowing. He held his jaw and tested it. “I’ll let this go. I can see you’re hurting. But, don’t ever do that again. Best friend or not, I’ll kick your ass.” He took a deep breath and pointed to the body on the bed. “Now. Pronounce him!”

Dr. Markson stared angrily, his silence derisive. Chloe could sense his barely leashed fury coupled with profound loss and grief. The emotions emanating from him were terrifying. She briefly wondered if there was more than a patient-doctor relationship.

Dr. Wasko sighed in exasperation, looked at his watch, and then turned to Nurse Wall. “Mr. Barkley is pronounced dead. Time of death four twenty one a.m.” At that, he turned and left the room. It was as though a tight band had snapped. Suddenly gazes darted about, seeking confirmation on what had just been witnessed. No one dared to look in Dr. Markson’s direction. Feet hurried towards the door, making a hasty escape.

“What the fuck happened here?” The deep voice was controlled, but infused with rage. “Who found him?” Dr. Markson addressed Nurse Wall, his tall frame hovering menacingly over her.

Chloe’s back hugged the wall. She felt her stomach plummet to her feet when Nurse Wall’s head swiveled towards her. A pair of intensely blue eyes locked on hers, and Chloe thought she’d faint from the power of that angry gaze. A cold wave blew down her spine, but ironically she could feel sweat bead on her temple and upper lip. Afraid, she pulled her gaze away and jerked it around the room, not surprised by it’s now near emptiness. Everyone had fled, she guessed afraid of Dr. Markson’s wrath.

In two long-legged strides, he was towering over her, his hard gaze zooming in on her face.

“What the fuck happened to my patient?” he growled.

“I…I…don’t know. He was just so confused and agitated tonight! One minute we were talking, and then…then…” Chloe swallowed nervously, but her weepy gaze kept returning to the bed where her dead patient lay.

“I demand an explanation! Now! Let’s go outside.”

Chloe jumped as the deep baritone shot through her like a blazing cannonball. She could clearly see pain in Dr. Markson’s eyes, but her priority was her patient. God! They had just left him there in a mess of tubes and wires and blood. Even his gown was now on the floor! He was naked.

She squared her shoulders and looked into the penetrating gaze that stabbed her, trying to ignore the fissures it made in her composure.

“I’ll talk to you after I take care of Mr. Barkley,” she said shakily and took a step towards the bed.

His large hand shot out to grab her and she jolted as his touch burned her skin. She looked at the long, tapered fingers circling her upper arm, then stared into the bottomless eyes that seemed to be a pathway to hell. Anger settled in, quickly sweeping away her fear. She would not allow him to bully and intimidate her.

“Get your hand off me. Now. And I refuse to talk to you while Mr. Barkley is laying here, dead. I will not disrespect him like this.” Her words sieved through clenched teeth.

She watched air charge through his flared nostrils as his forehead pinched in a flagrant show of disbelief.

Chloe heard her nursing supervisor shuffle up next to them. Peripherally she could see her wringing her hands, her fingers white with anxiety.

“I’m so sorry, Dr. Markson. She doesn’t know what she’s doing. She’s always been a bit of a problem. Chloe, why don’t you step outside with Dr. Markson. I’ll take care of Mr. Barkley’s preparation.”

Chloe’s gaze darted to her supervisor. She could feel the wheels roll over her as she lay sprawled under the bus.

“No. He’s my patient. I want to take care of him. We were…close,” she beseeched the other woman, but could see Nurse Wall’s lips tighten angrily. “There’s no reason why Dr. Markson can’t wait.”

Her supervisor’s face colored angrily. “Listen, Nurse Bennett, when Dr. Markson asks you to do something, you do it! I cannot believe your insubordination!”

Instantly bells started ringing in her head, echoing a warning. He could have her fired in the blink of an eye with just one word to her nursing director, and she desperately needed this job, but now anger and grief overruled common sense. She pursed her lips and turned back to him, noticing he was staring at her. His head swiveled and his gaze roved Mr. Barkley’s body. She saw shadowy grief fill his eyes, and abruptly he dropped his hand from her arm. She inhaled deeply, finally able to breathe again.

“I’ll be out after I’m done,” Chloe informed him firmly.

Nurse Wall’s eyes rounded. “Your behavior is completely outrageous! Who do you think you are? I want you to know we’ll be recommending your discharge!”

Her stomach plummeted, but she pushed back the billowing fear. She did notice that Dr. Markson turned abruptly to Nurse Wall, his eyebrows raised in question. He took a step back and speared his long fingers through his hair, a look of exhaustion blanketing his face.

“I will be waiting in the nurse’s station. And please do not test my patience.”

He turned and stalked from the room, leaving her with her glaring supervisor. Chloe tried to ignore the vehemence leaking from Nurse Wall as she steeled her emotions and focused on the task ahead.

Dr. Brad Markson paced the small room at the back of the nursing station, his long legs taking him from one side of the confining square to the next in just three determined strides. His fingers forked through his hair for about the tenth time since he’d walked into the room. His back ached and his temples throbbed from the unrelenting pressure bearing down on him. Usually he could shoulder the responsibilities of his position and tackle any obstacle that came at him with an innate skill that others openly admired and awed. But today had been a brutal day, a true test of a man wound so tight he threatened to collapse, and this last devastating blow was crushing his shoulders with its mighty weight.

He’d been in surgery for the past six hours repairing a major coronary anomaly that other doctors had deemed inoperable. Not a candidate for a heart transplant, the patient’s prognosis had been grave. The young man would have been lucky to last another week without Brad’s intervention. The surgery had been grueling, requiring every measure of his skill and concentration. The cardiac team had all but fallen at his feet as the stuttering heart had jumped to life and the muscle started to pump vigorously as he’d finished the surgery. Brad had come out of the OR on an adrenaline high, full of hope and testosterone, only to hear the news about Mr. Barkley.

Mr. Barkley had been one of the first patients he’d treated with Robotic Coronary Bypass Surgery. That surgery had been a stunning success and had catapulted his career. Other doctors had thought Mr. Barkley’s cardiac muscle too damaged to tolerate the surgery, but Brad had been successful. Mr. Barkley’s supportive family had been greatly appreciative and extensively generous to the hospital in Brad’s honor. He’d quickly developed a close relationship with the family, frequently attending family functions, and he even had several as patients. It had only been in the last year or so that Mr. Barkley’s mental status had started to deteriorate, but he still had a productive life.

Brad ground to an abrupt halt, staring blindly at the wall. What the fuck? Mr. Barkley was supposed to go home tomorrow. What could have happened? How was he going to explain this to his family? He needed answers and that damn nurse told him he had to wait? He never had to wait for anyone! Yet, here he was, pacing a small disheveled room, waiting. He grumbled with annoyance, stemming the urge to march back to the room and drag her out. He could feel his stress simmering hotly below his skin, blistering his composure.

Brad looked down at his long fingers, frowning deeply when he saw the fine tremors start. Damn! He fished a pill bottle from the pocket of his scrub top, adeptly twisted the top and popped a tiny white oval under his tongue. Feeling the sharp edge of his anger dull slightly, he closed his eyes and sighed wearily. His heart lurched painfully as he thought of his patient’s family, especially Mary. Poor Mary. She was going to be devastated.

. Unable to contain his impatience a moment longer, he took a step towards the door just as it swung open.

“What the hell took you—” Brad’s roaring words crashed abruptly as his gaze landed on the nurse’s face.

Her countenance was glazed with a sickly pallor and the large hazel eyes that had previously glared defiance at him now studied the floor with a dull dispassion. He pulled his lips thin and turned his gaze from her, surprised by how much her doleful expression moved him. He couldn’t imagine what she’d just had to do. She’d said that she and Mr. Barkley were close. He supposed he should be sympathetic, but he had a difficult time considering anything except the task that lay ahead of him tonight. He’d have to call the family to inform them, then meet with them later in the morning. Just the thought sent crushing pressure sliding down his back-bone. He braced his arms across his chest.

“What happened in there?” His voice came out rougher than he’d intended.

Large, sad eyes hesitantly met his and he ignored the sudden jolt of emotion. “It—it’s as I said. We were talking and then he just coded. He seemed to just stop breathing.”

“Had he complained of anything? Chest pain? Trouble breathing?”

She swung her head back and forth, returning her nervous gaze to her feet. “Nothing. He was just confused.” He watched her forehead crease in a frown. “More tonight than usual. It’s so strange.”

“His mental status tends to fluctuate,” Brad explained. “Did he get all of his medication?”

The nurse nodded.

“On time?” he pressed.

At that, her head shot up and her dull eyes narrowed, filling with a glassy shine. She was obviously offended by his question. He almost smiled as he saw a hint of the defiance he’d witnessed back in his patient’s room.

“Of course on time,” she snapped.

He resumed his pacing, hands clasped behind his back. He shot a quick glance at her. She was still a statue by the door, her glare tracking his progress. “He was supposed to have his beta-blocker increased to fifty milligrams. Did he get the increase in medication?”

Her shoulders squared and her narrow jaw tightened. “That increase was not supposed to occur until tomorrow morning, after he was done with the IV taper. Those were the orders,” she stated archly.

Brad gave a perfunctory nod. She was right. He didn’t know why he felt the need to test her. She’d just been through hell and didn’t deserve his wrath. He sighed and delved his fingers into his hair, absorbing the anger and hatred that radiated like dark fumes from the nurse standing in front of him. Her lips were a slash of indignation and her eyes glazed with loathing. He knew if she had the liberty, she’d toss a few choice words in his direction.

He continued to pace silently while she waited in anticipation of his next question. Truthfully, he had no more questions. She’d told him all he needed to know. He thought back to Larry Wasko’s words. Mr. Barkley was an old man. And although he’d seemed to be doing well, his heart must have failed. Brad just didn’t deal well with losing patients. He had a tremendous respect for life. His job was to preserve it and keep people healthy. It pained him to lose a patient, especially someone he was close to. It wasn’t something that happened often. The tough week and this grueling day were beating at him like heavy fists, leaving dents in his usually solid nerves of steel. He stopped and pivoted towards the nurse, feeling like a jerk for having been so hard on her.

“That will be all.”

She hesitated, as if wanting to say something, but then turned to leave, no doubt in a hurry to escape him. Brad’s gaze landed on her arm and he frowned.

“You’re hurt. What happened?”

She turned back, her amber eyes wide with confusion, and then she followed his gaze to her forearm.

“Oh, nothing, really.”

She started to leave again and he strode impatiently towards her. Taking her arm to get a better look, he scrutinized the line of half-moon bruises that marched across her forearm. The flesh was starting to blotch a light purplish-red, and he noticed that some of the skin was broken. He traced a finger pad over the area, registering somewhere in his subconscious the smooth texture of her delicate skin.

“This looks new. Did this happen with Mr. Barkley?”

She jerked her arm away from his grasp, seeming annoyed by the question.

“Yes, but he didn’t mean to. He was just confused.”

“It’s not like him to be combative.”

“He wasn’t combative. Like I said, he seemed more confused tonight.” He watched her eyebrows pull together as she seemed to summon a memory. “He was saying something about leaving the hospital.”

“What was he saying?”

Her pinched forehead showed her clear exasperation with him, but it was his personality to be tenacious, to question everything.

At length, she shook her head. “He said ‘they won’t let me leave here’.”

“Here…as in?”

The nurse shrugged. “I don’t really know. The hospital, I think. He said he wouldn’t be going home. He was just so confused. He was also talking about surfing and falling from his surfboard.”

Brad smiled and noticed her nervous gaze land on his mouth, but then it quickly fluttered away. “He was a big surfer when he was young.”

She nodded, her glance veering eagerly towards the door.

Brad found himself staring at her face. “What’s your name?”

“Chloe.”

“You may go, Chloe.” He sighed and nodded his chin towards her arm. “Get that looked after.”

The words hadn’t fully left his lips before she was through the door. He stood silent for a moment, staring at the spot she’d occupied then ground the heels of his hands into his eyelids. Damn! He was stressed! He vaguely wondered if he should increase the dose of his medication.

Pulling his cell phone from his pocket, he settled for a different option and dialed the familiar number to his current stress reliever.

“One hour. Be naked when I get there!” He snapped his phone shut and headed through the door.

Book Review

pizap.com10.60058447951450941389336923904

This was my first Lisa Eugene Novel.  Once I started reading, Surrender My Love, I did not want to put the novel down. The mystery and pull between the hero and heroine had this reader totally engaged. Even though I enjoy romance reads, medical themes are not my normal read. But I have to say that I very much enjoyed this read. Though it is the second book in Eugene’s Washington Memorial Hospital Series, it can be read as a stand-alone. Or as I read it, out of order. The first novel in the series is, Steal My Heart. After reading Surrender My Love, I look forward to making the first book in the series, including Eugene’s Strictly Business my next reads.

In reading, Surrender My Love I encountered several large words. Now, don’t let this discourage you from reading this novel. Luckily my Kindle app has a dictionary function. So all I had to do was touch the word on the screen and it would tell me what the word meant.  Learning new words is one reason I like to read books.  My motto is to , “learn something new each day.” Reading this novel, definitely helped me with this goal.

My mom was going to be a nurse in the early 50’s. However she got married instead, and back then a woman could not be married and be a nurse. She did enjoy reading books in which doctors and nurses where the main characters. So in a way, I felt like I was reliving happy memories while reading this novel. I can totally understand Chloe’s character. I watched my mom look after her own mother when she had dementia. Looking after someone you love with health issues, especially the ones Chloe’s mother and my own grandmother had takes its toll emotionally, physically, and monetarily on the caregiver. It is really heartbreaking and is something never forgotten no matter how much time passes.

All I can say is that the patients at Washington Memorial Hospital sure get good care. I thought it was interesting to read in the novel that Chloe used a flashlight at night to check on the patients. Also that the hall lights dimmed in the evening hours, and that she and Susan checked on their patients every thirty minutes. I have been in the hospital as a patient a few times. I think the hall lights stayed on constant, and the nurses came in a few times, but not every thirty minutes. I am just glad that I usually had someone stay with me when unfortunately in the hospital. As a patient, at least for me, it can be scary at times.

4.0 Rosebud Writing Rave

Writing was spot on, big words an all. The story-line was engaging, interesting, filled with romance, mystery, and humor (thanks to Bea). Enjoyed the story from start to end. I only wish the end had not been so fast. Wishing it could have been drawn out a little longer. It was like slam, bang, HEA.  As mentioned before, I read this novel first and out of sequence. I reading about the character Nina, I was a bit curious about her husband. Now I know that her story is in, Strictly Business (Amazon). Readers are also briefly introduced to Maggie who is also a nurse at Washington Memorial. Her story is in, Steal My Heart (Amazon). One of my favorite parts of the novel was when our hero and heroine went to visit the professor at his home. Loved all his animals, sounded like my house, the talking to them and everything. However, my dogs have more creative and original names…  🙂

I am looking forward to making these novels my next reads.

4.0 Romance Rave

From the instant the hero and heroine meet there is chemistry. This chemistry only gets hotter as the story goes along. Readers, let this story be a lesson to you, don’t judge a person by their outside, but about their inside… (though being a HOT doctor is a perk!)

Do I recommend this read? YES!!!

Excerpt:

Chapter One

Gene Harris breathed in the sticky summer air as he ran a hand through his mussed, sweaty russet colored hair. Crickets chirped in the background, and the gravel crunched beneath his feet as he made his way up to the main house. He had just checked in with the night watch for the evening, and was ready to go to bed. It seemed like the days were jam-packed, while the nights were too short. It was overwhelming. His late father made it all look so easy, but Gene was beginning to wonder if he had the makings of an alpha. Not that he could ever let his doubt show. With a war brewing, he could not afford to appear weak.

The bright white lights of the ranch shone in his eyes as he rounded the corner of the barn. His eyes grew heavier with each step, exhausted, he was glad to be home. He froze. Soft calculated footsteps padded towards him. Narrowing his eyes, he looked around. There was no one in sight. The footsteps faltered and stilled. Gene clenched his fists, fearing that someone had snuck onto the property. Inhaling a deep breath, he tried to place their scent. There was an unusually strong aroma of pine and dirt. The disgruntled alpha suppressed the growl that was bubbling up in his throat. Whoever it was, they’d taken the pains to deliberately mask their scent. Rocks skidded behind him as the intruder tried to backtrack. Turning on his heel, he sprung toward the side of the out-building-gripping the intruder’s arm tightly-and shoved them against the wood siding of the barn.

He growled, his eyes widening and dilating as they took on a golden hue. Anger surging through him, he took in the person who had been sneaking around.

Fierce chestnut eyes met his as the slender form struggled against his grip. Her long coffee colored hair fell into her eyes as she fought to free herself. Recognizing the terrified woman, Gene released his grip and took a small step back. The alpha closed his eyes, shifting them back to their normal chocolate color, in hopes that this would make him seem less threatening.

“I didn’t realize you were out,” Gene said, appraising Natalia. “Why are you sneaking around out here?”

Her fist flew out of nowhere striking him across the jaw. Gene blinked as pain exploded in his mouth. His hand flying to his cheek as he tried to work the pain away by opening and closing his mouth. “I’m sorry,” he apologized, realizing the irony of his words as he said them. Still, it hadn’t been his intent to alarm her.

“Do not touch me,” she hissed venomously, shrinking back against the red planks. Chestnut eyes became slits as she clenched her fists—probably so she could strike out again, if needed. Fear rolled off of her in waves, surrounding him with the putrid stench of soured milk.

“I didn’t realize anyone else was out here. Is everything okay?” Gene questioned, taking another step back. He raised his hands in the air, keeping them where she could see them. To his knowledge, Natalia rarely ventured out of her bedroom. He didn’t want to be the reason that trend continued.

“I am fine,” Natalia snapped. She edged her way along the building, her eyes watching him the whole way.

“Let me escort you back in,” Gene offered, maneuvering himself so he was in front of her.

“I do not need your help,” Natalia snarled as she recoiled away from him.

“It’s late, you shouldn’t be out here alone,” Gene commented, looking up at the star covered sky. He could not help but wonder where she had been, and why she’d needed to sneak around. “We’re on high alert. You could have been hurt, wandering around out here like that.”

Although Natalia had been living under his roof for over a month now, Gene could count the number of times he’d seen her on one hand. Perhaps it was time he learn more about the elusive she-wolf. “You know you can come and go as you please. There is no need to sneak around out here. You should tell someone where you’re going so this doesn’t happen again. You should also consider getting an escort. And you absolutely should not be masking your scent. I thought you were an intruder. A war is on the horizon.”“I just want to be left alone so I can change in peace,” she fumed.“And I’m just trying to protect everyone in my pack,” Gene stated.

Instead of responding, Natalia shot him a lethal glare. Her lip curled in anger, and her brown eyes turned yellow. He could not be sure if she was angry, or if she still felt threatened. With a low growl, she pushed past him and darted the rest of the way to the main house. Yanking the door nearly off its hinges, she dashed inside, thudding up the wooden steps to her bedroom.

Gene shook his head and sighed. The beautiful brown-haired woman was a mystery to him. He knew that Natalia often spoke to Lark, his cousin’s girlfriend, but the blonde human refused to spill any details. He wished there were something more he could do to help the young she-wolf feel more at home at the ranch. Gene had thought about pushing Natalia to open up to him, but not knowing the full extent of the abuse she’d received from Juarez and Emmett McKinley, gave him pause. Instead, he had opted to let her come out of her own shell.

Shaking his worries away, he entered the house and sought out his own bed. He was far too tired to contemplate things tonight.

***

Natalia shut the white oak door behind her, leaning back against it as she panted heavily. Lark, who had been watching after her son, Adrian, stood up from the bed with a worried look on her face. Natalia’s heart beat wildly in her chest as she tried to regain her composure. Closing her eyes to gather her thoughts, she forced even breaths in and out of her nose. When she opened them again, she turned to the bassinet, checking to see if her son was still asleep.

“Is everything okay?” Lark asked, taking a step toward the she-wolf. Natalia nodded and forced a smile as she trailed a gentle finger down the blanket her son was swaddled in. He looked so peaceful.

“Yes,” Natalia said.

“He hasn’t made a peep,” Lark assured her. “Did you have a good run?”

“I feel better now, thank you,” Natalia mumbled, willing her terrified nerves to relax.

A cold chill zipped down her spine and she tensed, clasping her hands tightly to keep the shaking at bay. She shouldn’t wait so long to transition anymore; it wasn’t good for her health.

“What happened?” Lark asked, frowning.

“The alpha…he heard me coming back and…” Natalia paused to look at Lark, whose blue eyes widened as she waited for the she-wolf to continue. “Anyway, he startled me and I…I punched him.”

“You punched Gene?” Lark asked slowly as a small smile slid across her face.

“I suppose it was instinct,” Natalia mumbled, her face reddening as guilt consumed her. She had acted impulsively; her nerves had already been frayed from the rough transition. The alpha had done nothing to her as of yet, and, for that, she was more than grateful.

“Do you think he will be angry?”

Lark shook her head. “No. Gene was never one to hold a grudge. But you should talk to him. He is a good guy, and I’m sure you’d like to be a productive member of the ranch.”

Natalia sighed and nodded. What she really wanted was to leave this place—to find a place where she could live safely with Adrian. But she doubted that such a place existed.

“I will think on it. I am sure that, if Gene is back, Devon must be waiting for you at his home.” Forcing a tight-lipped smile, Natalia squeezed her hands tighter, hoping to keep her trembling hands out of sight.

Lark grinned and tucked a blonde curl behind her ear. “I should probably get going. I’ll stop by tomorrow, though.”

“I will see you then,” Natalia said as Lark left, softly clicking the door shut behind her.

Natalia walked to the door, flipping the lock. It wouldn’t keep anyone out if they truly wanted in, but at least she would wake up if the lock were broken. She flopped down on the bed with a sigh, closing her eyes and wrapping her arms around her torso. Natalia’s body tensed, and she cringed as a numbing pain jolted through her limbs.

Breathing deeply, she focused on Larks words, hoping they’d pull her out of her episode. Lark was right; she would have to venture out of this room eventually. If the alpha was giving her freedom, she should learn as much as she could about the pack and their mannerisms. She’d spent too much time locked up as a prisoner before arriving at the ranch. Now, she was no longer a prisoner, but she had no way of knowing how long that would last. Better to gather information for an escape now, than to wait for the alpha to act later.

The spasms finally slowed as sleep gnawed at the back of her mind. Burrowing into the pillows, she pictured the ocean—home.

***

Gene let out a long breath and relaxed back into his leather chair. After his run-in with Natalia last night, he’d been too wired to sleep. He wasn’t quite sure why, but he was paying for it today. The day seemed to be moving in slow motion.

He’d finally finished all of his pack business for the day, and now he needed to move on to paperwork for the ranch. Turning to his computer, he typed in his password. Just as he was about to pull up his files, he was interrupted by the shrill ringing of the phone. He cleared his throat. “Hello?”

Gene was greeted by an all-too-cheerful voice on the other end. “Gene Harris, it’s Fernando Juarez.”Gene tensed, grasping the phone tighter. It had been a month since he’d heard from the dangerous alpha of the Gulf packs. Not wanting the other alpha to know he was startled, he responded, “I was beginning to wonder when we would hear from you again.”

Fernando chuckled into the phone. “My apologies, son. I’ve been quite busy with other affairs. I did call to inquire about my granddaughter, Natalia, and my great grandson or granddaughter.”

Granddaughter? Gene hadn’t realized Natalia was related to Fernando. “They are fine,” he replied, keeping his voice calm and even. The phone, however, crackled under his grip as he tightened his hold.

“Well, I’m glad to hear it. I just wanted to extend an offer to her; she is more than welcome to come home anytime she pleases. We miss her here. Family belongs with family, don’t you agree?” Fernando inquired. His voice was light, but Gene could hear the underlying threat.

“The decision is hers. If she chooses to return to your home, I would never stop her,” Gene said honestly. From what he’d seen of Natalia, however, he highly doubted she would want to return home. Still, uncertainty crept through him. There wasn’t much he knew about her, and he realized that it was high time he got to know the woman taking refuge at his ranch. Natalia had come with them willingly when they had rescued Lark and Emily from the McKinley homestead a few weeks ago. Gene had left her alone until now, knowing that she was a new mother and already frightened. This was not, however, a viable option any longer. One way or another, she was going to become a productive member of his pack.

“Of course it is,” Fernando replied, laughing heartily. “Just send her my best wishes, will you?”

“I’ll let her know. Was there another reason for your call?” Gene asked.

“Actually, I was planning a trip to Louisiana in a few weeks. Perhaps I will stop by to meet with you. I like to know who my neighbors are.”

“I wouldn’t exactly call us neighbors. New Mexico is several hundred miles from Abilene,” Gene said, an edge creeping into his voice.

“I’ll let you think on it. After all, my granddaughter is living in your home. I will be in touch to work out the details,” Fernando said unfazed.

Gene opened his mouth to respond when the line clicked and went dead. With a low growl, he hung up the phone. It seemed their reprieve from the Gulf packs was up. Taking his cell phone out, he pounded in his cousin Devon’s number. In order to decide on the best course of action, he would need to collaborate with the other alpha.

He had just started to dial the number when he heard a knock on his office door. The knob jiggled and turned as Devon entered. “I was just getting ready to call you,” Gene said, sitting back in his chair.

“I came over with Lark. She’s upstairs with Natalia,” Devon said as he sank into the leather chair opposite Gene. “The two of them have really hit it off.”

Devon’s hazel eyes flashed gold for a moment before returning to normal. “What did he want?”

“He offered Natalia the opportunity to come home, and wants to come here to meet with me.”

“Didn’t we do this with him already?” Devon asked, referring to a similar conversation they’d had a month ago.

“I think he’s serious this time, Dev,” Gene said. “We knew he wasn’t going to just let things go. For whatever reason, he’s decided that he wants to pursue us again.”

“Then we should send Preston and Vincent out to speak with other packs sooner rather than later,” Devon surmised.

Gene nodded in agreement. “If we’re going to stand any chance, we need more manpower. Juarez mentioned that he was heading to Louisiana.”

“You think he’s doing the same thing?”

“I certainly wouldn’t put it past him,” Gene said, running a hand over the stubble that adorned his jaw. “I think he wants as many wolves under his control as he can possibly get. We need to plead our case to the packs we think will be most sympathetic to our case. The way I figure it, there are three kinds of packs. There are those that believe in his barbaric, old school ways of owning women and forcing them to mate. There are those that will bow down out of fear. And there are those like us, who aren’t afraid to stand up for what is right.”

“We have three fertile women here, four if you include Em. They will be an allure to the men. We want to make sure that we attract the right kind of wolves here,” Devon said quietly.

“Agreed,” Gene acknowledged. “The last thing we need is for men coming, thinking they are going to find a mate here, or force one of their hands. Maddie and Amelia, I’m not worried about so much; your mother watches after them like a hawk. Emily and Marcus are mated, which should be a strong deterrent. It’s Natalia…” Gene trailed off. He swallowed. The need to protect her overwhelmed him. He wanted to shelter her—keep her safe—soothe away her fears.

“I think she can fend for herself,” Devon chuckled. “Lark mentioned the two of you had a run-in last night.”

Gene’s hand instinctively drifted to the corner of his jaw. There had been a well-defined bruise last night. Thanks to his accelerated healing, the blemish was barely noticeable today. “She can. If she is ever going to feel at home here, we need to use caution. She reacted out of fear when I approached her last night. I imagine she keeps herself locked up in that room because she is afraid of us.” He paused, replaying Juarez’s words in his head. “Did you know she is Juarez’s granddaughter?”

“No.” Devon frowned as he leaned forward. “That’s an interesting development, unless you think he is lying?”

“I don’t see why he would lie about that,” Gene said, running a hand through his hair. “I need to know what Natalia knows. If anything she could be a good ally.”

“We both know you’re more of a people person than I am,” Devon smirked.

Gene laughed, knowing the truth behind the statement. “Perhaps I’ll go up now.”

***

“You and Adrian should come down for dinner tonight. Sunday dinners are always the best,” Lark said as she tickled Adrian’s belly.

Natalia smiled at the sound of her son’s cooing. “I don’t think so.”

“If you’re worried about Gene-”

“It’s not that,” Natalia said cutting Lark off. “I do not trust Daniel or Claire.” Or anyone! She thought to herself. If she could run away, she would. She’d come to the awful realization that there was nowhere for her to go. This pack seemed nicer, but she was still a prisoner.

“Sarah, Emily, and I are going shopping next weekend. Fall is almost here, and Sarah wants to get some new clothes before she goes to college. You and Adrian could come with us,” Lark said, glancing up to meet Natalia’s gaze.

“I don’t know,” Natalia hesitated. She would like to get out and resume a normal life. “You’re going by yourselves?”

“Devon and Marcus will probably be there-maybe Preston-but I doubt they’ll be hovering. After the kidnappings, Devon and Gene aren’t taking any chances with anyone. They’ll probably stay far away from us while we shop, but with everything that is going on, it isn’t safe for us to just go out,” Lark rambled, chewing on her bottom lip.

“I will think about it,” Natalia said with a sigh. She hadn’t been shopping in close to a year now. It would be nice to get out. To have clothes of her own to wear again.

“Nobody here is going to hurt you, Talia,” Lark reminded her. “If you want to talk about what happened…”

“I don’t,” Natalia snapped. Shivers zipped down her spine as her mother’s dead, haunted eyes flashed in her mind.

Lark opened her mouth to respond, but quickly closed it when someone knocked loudly on the door. Natalia gripped the green bed sheets in her hand as Lark set Adrian down in the bassinet.

“Who is it?” Lark asked, making her way to the door and resting her hand on the knob.

“It’s Gene. I need to speak with Natalia,” the alpha’s voice called from the other side.

Natalia tensed as the door creaked open, gritting her teeth as the alpha glanced at her.

“Hey Lark,” Gene greeted with a warm smile before turning his intent brown eyes on Natalia. “Do you mind helping Claire out in the kitchen? I need to have a few words with Natalia.”

“Oh, um, sure,” Lark said, glancing between the two of them.

“Thanks,” Gene said, opening the door wider so Lark could exit.

Natalia swallowed as Lark gave her one last look before exiting the room. Fear gripped her as the cream-colored walls seemed to close in on her. She could only imagine what he was going to force her to do. She’d been waiting for him to make demands. It appeared today was the day.

Into the Unknown, is the second book in Indie Author, Bethany Shaw’s Werewolf Wars, a Paranormal Romance series. Into the Unknown, tells Gene and Natalia’s story. The flow of the novel follows exactly with the ending of Book 1, Out of the Shadows. The novels could be read as a stand-alone, however I would recommend them to be read in order. In this way, the reader will have a better understanding of the actions, danger, and how the relationships and characters connect to the novels.

Book 2 provides the reader a glimpse of what being an alpha is all about. Gene and Devon are now working together. Each supporting one another in the alpha role of their packs. Lark and Devon  from Book 1 feature quite heavily throughout Book 2. Other characters met in Book 1 such as Marcus and Claire take more minor roles in this newest novel.

Natalia has had a very rough life. Having the knowledge of who her father was, what her brothers were, weighs like lead in her heart. Especially in how she and her mother were eventually found and what occurred when she was taken back to Juarez’s pack. Due to her feelings toward these people, she has a hard time trusting Gene and those around him. Natalia in the beginning of the novel only feels safe with Lark. But you will have to read to find out why, and to see if by the end of the novel she trusts anyone else.

Shaw takes the reader on a true reading adventure. The pages of  this novel are filled with good times as well a bad. Juarez has his mind set of getting Natalia and her son back into his pack. He will use any way possible to achieve this.  His claws and power reach far and wide. No where is safe from his treachery.

Natalia’s main concern is her son. She only wants him to be safe. Adrian is her life, her reason for living, for breathing, her strength, and her weakness. She refuses to let him grow up as a member of Juarez’s pack. Natalia has walls built up around her heart. Can Gene break through them? Is Natalia successful in keeping Adrian out of the pack threatening war? To find the answers to these questions and to read about this strong female, who is an alpha in her own right, read , Into the Unknown by Bethany Shaw. Lose yourself in the adventure of survival. There is danger lurking around every corner. Yet, there is also a tug of war in the adventure of love happening in this novel. Will Natalia learn to trust Gene enough to work with him on fighting against Juarez? Can Gene show Natalia a different side of being a wolf shifter, one that is not evil or cruel, but respects women and their wolf traditions?

Extended Excerpt ~ Prologue

I was an addict.

Sophia didn’t know this about me when we met – when I stole her heart.

I struggle every day with my sobriety, and Sophia is my compass. She’s what keeps me grounded and always points me in the right direction. She doesn’t nag or yell but smothers me in her love and understanding.

Sophia asked to hear my story, my past. She wanted to know everything about me…what led me to her. I gave her a condensed version – one that is closer to PG-13 compared to the NC-17 reality that I lived. No matter how much the person you love the most, the one who is the center of your universe asks about your past, you never give the full truth. I never want Sophia to compare herself to any of the women or experiences that I’ve had before her. Sophia is perfection in my eyes. No one could ever compare to her.

I’d like to say my life began again when I met Sophia, that I was given a clean slate. Sophia met me at the point in my life where I had given up on love. My life consisted of work and pleasure – pleasure from the unattached sexual relationships and the booze that had filled my nights.

When my life spiraled out of control, Sophia caught me in her web of security and love. She is my savior, the only thing that is true in my life. She can’t know my entire story. Who would want to know the true story of the love of their life, the father of their child?

The thought of Sophia being with another man makes my skin crawl and pisses me off. She’s mine, and I’d like to think that I’ve been the only man in her life and the first one to taste her, but I know I’m lying to myself. Ignorance is bliss, and I’d rather stay in the dark.

After our child was born, I thought it was necessary to get help to control my drinking. I needed to make sure I never walked down the path of self-destruction again. I had too much to lose. For the first time in my life, there was something more important than myself or even Sophia. There’s a tiny little life that depends on me and needs my love and adoration.

I didn’t want to go to group counseling – I’ve done that before, and it sucked; it wasn’t more than a temporary fix. I needed something to get to the root of my addiction and allow me to find other ways to cope with the pressures in life besides at the bottom of a bottle. The

counselor told me to write down the major events in my life – the ones that caused my drinking to go out of control or drove me to drink.

He said I needed to understand the cycle. What came first – the booze or the problems? He asked me to write a journal about my life. Everyone who I could remember that triggered my drinking, use of drugs, and events that were caused by my addiction that had an impact on my life. I didn’t see the use in writing it for someone else to read and analyze, but he said I would understand it in time.

Where do I start the tangled mess that was my life? Do I start with my first taste of booze, the first sniff of coke, or the crazy bitches I’ve experienced? There will be bits that I leave out; things I don’t want the world to know. I’ve included the ones that show what has molded me into the man I am today. The ones that will fill in the gaps on my troubled journey that Sophia and I overcame and show the depths of my depravity and addiction before Sophia walked into my life and turned my world upside down.

I’ll start at the beginning, what led me off the path of righteousness through my moment of self-destruction and finally salvation in the arms of a loving woman too good to be mine.

Short Excerpt ~ Explicit:

“Hey, where ya going?” she asked. “What about me?”

“I’m sure someone here would be happy to give you what you want. I got what I was looking for, babe.”

“You had me suck your cock and you’re just going to fucking leave me here?” she asked glaring at me with hatred so pure I could almost feel the fist she wanted to hit me with.

“I got what I came for. You were a total bitch to me for years; you don’t deserve what I’d give, how good I’d fuck you,” I said with my arms crossed against my chest.

“You’re a total cocksucker, Kayden,” she said poking me in the chest with each word to drive the point home.

“No, that would be you, babe,” I said with a smile, “Oh, and by the way, you have a little on your chin,” I said pointing at her face chuckling softly at the situation. I watched as she wiped her chin and I turned and walked away, leaving her there like she deserved.

Kayden: The Past by Indie Author, Chelle Bliss is Kayden’s story. Readers meet Kayden in Untangle Me, Bliss’ debut novel and book 1 of the, Love at Last Series. Kayden: The Past, can be read as a stand alone novel, but I would recommend reading it AFTER, Untangle Me. To me, it just seems to be the more natural order, and/or if you are planning on reading book 1, then it may spoil the ending for you.

The Beginning…

High School… This is where it all starts. I mean, who doesn’t want to be popular in school. And Kayden is no different. Here is where alcohol and Kayden meet…

Love and Revenge. Read to see how Kayden does it!

Lisa becomes a person that Kayden does not even recognize any more.  One of my favorite parts is this,

pizap.com10.28603318473324181389358214899

This is what I am always doing to my husband when he is playing the, ‘block game’, aka Mindcraft. I mean I do not mind him being on it some, but not for hours, losing time and whole days while playing the silly thing. Maybe it just a wife thing or  a me thing, there is work to be done and he is off in his whole little world. But Lisa was to controlling, not even letting him hang out with the guys, and checking his texts and so forth. A relationship is a give and take that needs to be equal among the parties involved. Lisa is more of a taker than a giver.

The End

How does that old saying go, save the best for last? Well Chelle Bliss does just that. When using Facebook myself to chat with her about her novel she remarked that I would not cry. Yet, being the emotional reader that I am these last chapters with Sophia and Kayden did find me shedding some very happy tears. Overall the ending was my favorite, favorite, favorite part.

I most definitely recommend this novel!!! 100+++++ percent!!!!!

It just amazes me how as a female writer Bliss writes so candidly and  like the words are coming straight out of a mans brain. I enjoyed reading this novel. The material is very mature in content, so if you have trouble reading a novel that mentions cock, orgasm, and the F word a lot, well then, maybe this is not your speed.

Oh my gosh, this novel just begs for you to keep reading. The reader will be surprised and engaged on every page. This is a novel you will want to stay up all night reading!!! The reader is provided with the background to really connect and understand Kayden, how his past treated him, and how he treated himself in that past. Everyone deals with issues differently. I may not be happy when my hubs takes forever to get off the computer or forgets to pay a bill, but I still love him. Heck, half the time I want to slap him, the other half love and laugh with him. Kayden just found ‘LOVE’ in the wrong women before Sophia came into his life.

Book Excerpt:

I pulled the cover up to my chin like I’d done as a young girl when I was certain the closet monsters were coming out to get me, but I couldn’t relax enough to sleep. The house was quiet and dark again. I climbed back into my slippers. I peeked out into the hallway and everything was still. I tiptoed to the kitchen hoping a glass of milk would make me sleepy.

th (63)

I scuttled around the corner, and a gasp stuck in my throat. The refrigerator door was open, and the light pouring out illuminated his broad bare back, showing every line of hard muscle . . . and every small scar. There were many. His pajama pants hung low on his narrow hips, and I stood as quiet as a mouse for a guilty second and stared at his incredible physique.

He still had not heard me, and I wondered if he was still lost in the agony of his bad dream. I tiptoed without a sound, but as I neared he seemed to sense me. He continued to stare into the refrigerator as if he expected something to jump out into his hands.

“I’m sorry if I woke you.”

“Please don’t apologize.” His shoulders tensed as I moved closer to him. Even in front of an open refrigerator, heat rolled off of him in searing waves.

He shut the door but didn’t turn around. He leaned his forehead against the freezer door. I stepped closer. My hand trembled slightly as I reached up and touched him. The muscles of his back tightened and then relaxed. I trailed my fingers over the tiny scars that were splattered across his shoulders. The tiny ridges were hard, and I could feel the pain of each one in my fingertips. I stood on my toes and lowered my mouth to his skin. He sucked in a sharp breath as I pressed my lips to the scars. I kissed him over and over again wanting to absorb the pain that still clung to him physically and mentally. And he let me kiss him. His broad shoulders lifted and fell with each shallow breath as I ran my lips across his marred skin.

**Excerpt**
“Tell me what to do.” I kissed his neck. “I want you to forget the pain, all of it,” I whispered. I pushed his long hair behind his ear. “I want you to feel only me, touching you, kissing you.” I took his bottom lip between my two lips and tugged on it. “I’ll do anything . . . just ask.”

th (64)

Dalton North POV:

This isn’t in the book, Tess has written it just for the blog tour for us.

The throbbing in my head took my mind off the relentless pain in my leg. It had become my sort of twisted way of dealing with the constant agony. Get drunk enough for a skull-pounding hangover and it dulled everything else.

I made a stupid-ass attempt to mask the uneven sounds of my footsteps, but the wooden hallway floor made it pretty damn laughable. I wasn’t even completely sure why it mattered, except that I knew the girl was standing just around the corner in the kitchen. I’d heard her silky laugh twice before I’d even left my bedroom.

She stood in the kitchen helping with breakfast. Long auburn hair cascaded down the back of her sweater and I could see only the side of her face as she smiled sweetly at my dad. I’d been in a desert that was so hot just taking a breath hurt, a place where you learned not to trust even your own shadow, a place that could only be described as hell, and the only way to survive the nightmare of it all was to believe that somewhere else in another place, another time, another dimension angels existed. And now I’d come home and found one standing over the waffle iron in the kitchen.

She looked up as I entered the room and that was all it took. I could not look away. Her thin fingers trembled almost imperceptibly as she tucked her hair behind her ear. I dragged a chair out from the table and sat down hard and watched her. She grew more and more flustered by my scrutiny but I couldn’t stop myself. She was a piece of heaven that had floated in through the darkness and I wanted to watch her. And, even though she nearly bit through her plump, highly kissable bottom lip with agitation . . . it seemed . . . that deep down she wanted me to watch her.

Book reviews image

The novel begins right as the college Auggie is attending is finishing up exams and beginning winter break. The holidays are coming. Auggie’s best friend Rylie is heading home to have a REAL family Christmas. Which is something that Auggie has always wanted, though her parents are always making the holidays a traveling affair. Auggie has talked to her mother this year, and is excited about their stay at home this year plans. She and her mom are going to make cookies, Christmas dinner (no staff help or fancy dinnerware), and maybe even a gingerbread house.

But…

Instead she gets a call from her mother on the opposite coast (California) and the family is now heading to France for the holidays. Auggie puts her foot down and says–NO! She refuses to go, her mother promised her. Yet, another let down from her family. Auggie comes from a wealthy family. One of the servants even helped her learn how to ride a bike. So why should plans for REAL family Christmas be a surprise let down. Yet, it is for Auggie.

So what is she going to do over break…

It just so happens she gets a request from one of her favorite teachers to help catalog ancient Egypt pottery relics. He provides directions and tells her that his son Ethan (school hottie) is going to be there. Making the requests seem twice as enjoyable for Auggie.

The drive up to the professors house is filled with snow covered roads. At one point while glancing away for only a moment to check the directions she nearly runs over someone.

She is shaken after finding out the person is not hurt and manages to make it to the professors home.

(Would a student actually go to/be asked to  a professors home in real life for a project?)

Auggie enjoys the project and works quite competently and briskly is typing in the details needed in order to catalog the artifacts. She works long hours and enjoys the sight of the snow outside the office window.

th (67)

The next thing she knows is that the person from her incident on the road is actually one of Professor North’s sons. And he comes with some serious emotional and physical baggage.

During her stay at the North’s Auggie hears mention of a ‘Gold Band’ after an outing with the guys on snowmobiles. . The family seems very tense, but she tries to stay out of their way as much as possible.  Later Professor North shows her the object that his sons had mentioned in her presence. She is amazed at the wonder of the item.

th (66)

Auggie and Dalton (Professor North’s oldest son) find that they are attracted to one another. She shares how she ended up there, about how her plans for making cookies, gingerbread houses, and even decorating own Christmas tree got turned into a trip to France instead. Thus, she accepted the invitation to catalog the Egyptian Antiquities (which is her major).

th (72)

In a way this short novel is like a thriller and a romance in one. The professor gets a lot of phone calls that fluster him, and his mood changes for the worst from the beginning to the end of the novel. Dalton knows something is up, but he is just not sure what. He is a pretty smart guy. Very aware of his environment. I like this novel for several reasons. One being that it is not your average millionaire, biker, corporate man hero read. Dalton is a fictional character, but there are real persons with issues and military experiences similar to his. A second reason is that Auggie, even though she does see Dalton as attractive, she also sees him as a person. A person in more pain than just physical. It is almost like his pain is her pain. And third, because Auggie sees Dalton as an individual. Someone who is talented, strong, and caring.

Auggie and Dalton’s relationship does not begin until halfway through the novel. But when it starts it is pretty seductive. My favorite was the fireplace scene. I guess because I have often wondered what it would be like surrounded by snow, and having a warm and cozy fire in the fireplace; a perfect place for romance and memories to be made.

Towards the end the action and thrills come faster and faster. I could see the pages decreasing and I am going, OK, how is this going to end, what is the story behind it all going to be?

Which I will leave you guessing, I do not want to spoil if for you…

When the end came, I wanted more. More I tell you, more… How did Auggie spend the rest of her school break? What did the future hold for Dalton and for Auggie? Did her parents ever find out about the happenings and danger she was faced with over the break? Did Dalton ever teach Auggie how to use his pottery wheel?

I am hoping that since Rylie was introduced in the beginning of the novel that a second book will come out about her, and have information about Auggie and Dalton.

Because, I REALLY WANT TO KNOW…

book reviews strings

I kept seeing good reviews for the Room 103 Series when I first starting blogging in Sept/Aug. 2013. So I finally decided to  give it a try here recently. Now all I can say is, WHY did I not read it sooner??? Shocking Heaven is book 1 in the series. And it is absolutely AMAZING!!!!

There are several characters in this series. There is the band, Room 103, the Hero and Heroine, brothers, mothers, and even the British Mob!

Shocking Heaven introduces the reader to college students Eve and Jax. Thus, making this a New Age Genre read. Yet, this first novel covers around 5-6 years of time and contains a Part 1 and a Part 2. The whole novel is 50 odd chapters and contains a Prologue and Epilogue.

Every page takes the reader farther and farther into emotional situations. Let me forewarn you. If you are an emotional reader like I am, make sure you have lots of tissues handy. I am not ashamed (though my mother once told me it was silly for me to cry so over reading a book) that I had tears running down my face through the entire novel. Jax may play the guitar, but this novel really played on my heart-strings!

The Hero and Heroine hit nothing but brick walls all through the novel. Every time anything good seemed to be going either their way, they ladder of life would slide out from under them and they would be left dangling with a major life issue. Needless to say, Eve lives life according to her tattoos and lets nothing, NOTHING get in her way or slow or down. She is a very strong Heroine.

Both Eve and Jax come from very troubled and extremely unhappy families. Their childhoods were a struggle to survive. The two meet in college and well, you will just really have to read the book to see their adventure in Love.

Room 103 totally ROCKS!!! The novel is filled with mentions of music, and several that the band themselves wrote.

The theme of this book is to, NEVER GIVE UP!!!

Just read and find out what some of Eve’s tattoos say! They kept her going strong!!!

***

The author lives in England. So the dialect and the writing may confuse you a little. But, I know you can figure it out.

Just PLEASE read the novel if you have not already done so.

The New Age Genre is really not my go to read. I like my Hero and Heroine to be a little older. But this book did not disappoint in the least. It was very engaging and gave create details on the past of Eve, her brothers and Jax and his family life.

The ending will leave you happily surprised. Yes! That is the only spoiler I will give you!!!

Baby Girl

babygirl tease book 1

Synopsis

Erik does not believe in love and he doesn’t live in a mansion – he rides a motorcycle in a MC. He does not have an airplane. Erik is extremely confident, real, and knows what he wants. He wants a woman to submit; with no commitment for love. Erik will settle for nothing less than owning Kelli.

When these two begin to spend time together, things begin to change; personalities, interests, and the need for affection. What happens is something that must be experienced by the reader. This book is, again, not watered down. This book has tremendous depth to those that are looking to find it. It will, upon completion, allow you into the minds, hearts, and heads of people as they develop a D/s relationship.
Again, if you have always wondered about what a Dominant/submissive relationship is all about – less the airplanes, mansions, and billions, read Baby Girl. It’s real, it’s raw, and it’s got the hottest, steamiest real sex you can imagine.
babygirl tease book 1A
Can a love so strong that it can’t be broken develop between two people that don’t believe in love? What if the relationship is a Dominant/submissive one? This series is real, raw, and different than anything you’ll ever read. Read what develops between these two, and you’ll believe again. Prepare to be ruined from ever being satisfied by another erotica series.Erik Ead is the mid thirty something ever elusive bachelor. He suffered the loss of his father at a very young age and then his mother during a turning point as an adult. Both losses combined altered his emotional state of commitment.

Erik only seeks partners who are willing to be his submissive with no emotional attachment.

“Dominance, once experienced in a relationship, ruined any chance of me being satisfied in a non-dominant role.”

Kelli is the young twenty something college graduate. She is home for the summer working at her father’s car dealership. Just like Erik, Kelli also suffer the loss of a parent at a young age. Whereby, leaving her father to raise her all on his own. Kelli is missing something from her life that she didn’t realize until she found Erik.

Erik and Kelli’s relationship evolves but on unconventional terms. They each have needs that the other can fulfill. There are no hearts and flowers in this book, but what you will find are heart-felt struggles as two people come to terms with their meaning of love and commitment.

The first in a series of four books that is easily enjoyed as a stand alone.

Publication Date: October 31st 2013
Synopsis
In this book, the second of three, we see the exposure of these two characters, as well as the other characters of Book I, to life…
This Book is different than Book I in that it is more of the living, and less ‘thinking’.
Someone steals from the motorcycle club, and Erik begins to question loyalties, life, trust, and his exposure to people – the few he lets in his in his life.
These questions leave him seeking answers. Kelli sees changes in Erik and takes advantage of her opportunity.
This is what everyone wished for in Book I and did not get to read. Erik and Kelli ‘doing’, and less ‘thinking’.
Prepare for a ride like no other, this book takes us on a journey through the lives of many, primarily Erik and Kelli.

babygirl tease book 2

Erik Ead is Dominant. Kelli Park is submissive. Erik rides in a motorcycle Club. Kelli works at a BMW dealership. An unconventional relationship begins to develop that requires Kelli to be sexually submissive to the Dominant Erik. Erik is unforgiving when it comes to sex.

This book defines Dominance and submission as it happens in life.

If you’ve ever wondered what the lifestyle is really like, the Baby Girl series will clearly define it for you. Upon completion, you will know if you’re submissive or if you merely have a burning desire.

A Dominant/submissive relationship that defines love? Yes. This book will cause you to second guess the content of whatever relationship you may currently have.

Erik is a psychiatrist and rides in an MC. Kelli is a college graduate. Kelli and Erik are attempting to have a loving Dominant/submissive relationship. One that is real, raw, and includes love.

Kelli is a woman that Erik cherishes, loves, and adores. He still, however, requires that she submit sexually and completely.

Erik is a man that Kelli loves, respects, and wishes to please.

In this book about the development of a loving, caring, meaningful Dominant submissive relationship, Erik and Kelli each struggle with the imminent death of her father, and how to handle the loss of the only parent between them.

As the book progresses, so do they. Their true colors begin to show, and they become more of what each other may not necessarily expect.

What they do become is real. This book is as loving, caring, and romantic as you’ll ever see an erotica become. It will leave you in tears.

Good tears.

And have you second guessing your relationship, love, and life.

About the Author

Scott Hildreth image

I have somewhat of an old school approach to life. I enjoy listening to music, riding motorcycles, talking to people, reading, and writing. I do not watch television or drink alcohol. The majority of my time is spend researching materials or interviewing people regarding what I am writing about. My preference is writing a story that makes an impact on the reader. An impact that causes them to sit and think when they are finished with the book. To have someone finish a book and say, “Great book…” is fantastic. To have someone finish a book and say, “This book made such an impact on me that I immediately read it again, it changed my life..” is what I strive for. My novel, Broken People, is just that book.

I will never forget the first time I actually felt as if I had helped someone resolve an issue in their life. I was in middle school. It started then, and has continued throughout my entire life. I have always made myself available to talk to people and resolve (or attempt to resolve) issues that they struggle with.

Having an exceptional ability to communicate has always been a gift of mine, and I have enjoyed doing so. Telling stories has always been second nature to me. Writing has been a passion of mine since I was a child. I have written poetry, romance, self-help, addiction, alcoholism, codependency, technical, and satire. There isn’t a genre or a topic that I feel more comfortable with. I enjoy writing about whatever it is that I feel passionate about at the time.
Being open-minded and often seeing abusive relationships unfold, I have always been passionate about abuse, or the prevention of it. My main focus has always been people that are incapable of helping themselves, primarily women, children, and the elderly. I have talked to hundreds of women that were in abusive relationships, and assisted many of them in removing themselves from these relationships.

I try to focus in my writings to develop a story that makes people stop and think. To look at a subject or subjects from a different point of view. If I am able to get my point across, and make the subject entertaining to the reader, I feel that I have met my objective. I feel that I have tremendous depth as a person, and have had some great experiences in my life. To date, what life has offered me has been nothing short of spectacular. My opinions, point of views, and perspectives on matters are just that; an opinion. There isn’t necessarily a right or wrong in what I write, but more of a belief. I always believe in what I am writing, and I further believe that the reader may benefit from viewing it from the written perspective.

I hope that you enjoy reading what I have written as much as I enjoy writing it. Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than knowing a reader enjoyed something I have written. Considering that, please take time to leave a book review if you have read something I have written.

I met this author via Facebook. You know how the suggestions pop-up for friends, showing you how many ‘friends’ you have in common. So I clicked and requested Author SD Hildreth to friend me, and by gosh…he did! I received a message thanking me for the friendship, and telling me about his upcoming blog tour. So I signed the form and now here I am. I just finished Baby Girl, Book 1 in the Baby Girl Series.
I like erotic novels. So I was excited and looking forward to this read. As I started reading, I just wasn’t into it. Erik is the Hero of the series. He is very intelligent, and has a degree in  Psychiatry. Thus this novel tends to get deep in thought and meaning very quickly. I am used to emotional reads, just not ones that speak to the brain and well as the heart. However the more I read, the more I became drawn to this novel.
Erik is your Hero. He is in his thirties, well educated, loves life, and feels free when he rides on his motorcycle. In Baby Girl, the reader is introduced to Erik Ead at the BMW Dealership. Kelli is the Heroine of the novels. Her father is the owner of the dealership. She is home from school for the summer. She just graduated KU and is planning on heading to Columbia University for a Business Degree. During Erik’s time talking cars and body art, he notices Kelli. At first sight he sees the promise and possibility in this beautiful woman to be his new submissive.
Both Erik and Kelli are not into ‘Love’ or long term ‘Relationships’. From the very beginning Erik tells her flat out it is about sex. That he does not do relationships. Which is fine for Kelli since she is only in Old Town, Kansas for the summer and working as the receptionist at her fathers dealership.
Both of the characters come from backgrounds where they grew up in a one parent home. Erik explains throughout the novel how growing up in this situation effects a persons feelings as related to sex. So be prepared to read a lot of deep psychological reasoning on what makes a person who they are and what makes them who they are. A lot of information on love, relationships, why couple separate and how to keep them together. Some of the rationale actually makes sense.
***
Kelli -‘Time decides who we have in our lives, our hearts decide how we feel about them, and our actions and attitude toward them determine how long they stay’.
Erik– (quote from novel Broken People, also by Scott Hildreth)
‘”…you don’t give someone your love. They take it. Love is taken. And, when someone takes your love, you will know it…”‘.
Kelli– ‘As we grow older we change. Our lives change. Patterns of living, what we deem to be important, and sometimes out beliefs even change’.
Kelli– Feeling loved is a large part of what we, as humans, need to survive. We yearn to be loved. The perfect love.
***
Think on those thoughts…that is just an example of the emotional and mental depth this novel will lead you the reader to mull over.
In the meantime, I recommend this read!!!
Yes, there are erotic scenes in the novel. They usually happen in public. So just be aware, this novel has graphic elements and not for the light-hearted romance reader. The novel develops the happenings between Erik and Kelli at a rapid pace. Before you know it, they have already been seeing each other  for six weeks. The novel will end leaving you, the reader on the edge of your seat wondering if they are in a relationship, have the two discovered love, and will she or won’t she (Kelli) go to Columbia as planned. So thank goodness there is a Book 2!!!

Characters are clearly detailed, background and present information. Writing is clear and presented in the voice of each Character chapter. Author creates a world that the reader can step right into the pages and sit at a table, movie seat, or coffee shop and watch all the interaction between the varied players in the novel.

Fun Facts:
-In each of Hildreth’s novels the reader will find a character named, Heather.
– When this review asked Hildreth why his novel did not use chapter numbers, his reply was, ” I find them simple and boring.”
– When asked why Kelli removed her dress while waiting on Erik to arrive for their first official going out date, Hildreth’s response was, “A girl like Kelli is very uneasy and nervous about appearance with Erik, but not so much with others. She feels a need to meet him with an unwrinkled dress.”
– In reading this novel, I began wondering if Erik Ead was really the author, Scott Hildreth. When asked, he replied, “I’m Erik Ead, yes. Basically that’s true.”

Synopsis

Being the niece of the biggest star in the world isn’t easy–especially when someone is trying to kill you.

Nikki Solange is a small town Tennessee girl.  When she hits Hollywood and tries to become a movie Producer, she’s in for the culture shock of her life–and finding a D-list actor turned up-and-coming director floating face down in his Beverly Hills swimming pool is the least of it.  Now Nikki must walk the gauntlet that is Hollywood and try to stay alive because someone from Nikki’s hard-scrabble past is out to make sure that she ends up dead.

Pretending to be a Hollywood playboy film producer is easy when one of the world’s richest men is backing you.

Ex Marine sniper Rush Nelson is back from his final tour in Afghanistan and is now a security specialist for one of the world’s richest men, media mogul Ted Robinoff. Backed by his boss, Rush has a solid cover-story that includes some serious Armani threads, a pulse-pounding car, and a limitless expense account.  All to protect Robinoff, his business interests, and Robinoff’s family, which includes Ted’s superstar wife Celeste ‘Cici’ Solange and her pain-in-the-ass niece Nikki. Rush must achieve his directive without ruining his cover. Easy–except for one problem–Nikki Solange. Rush is falling for her.

When your mission is security, falling for the person you’re meant to protect is the number one rule not to break.

Guest Post

Nikki Solange is the perfect mix of tough and insecure.  She is so resilient and has so much perseverance.  She is a character who has been knocked down by life so many times and yet continues to get back up and keep going.

Author Quote

There was a path that each person walked, and you could shout to them, but somehow the wind that whistled through their ears on their own path always seemed to drown out the words of advice and wisdom. The best you could do when your paths met was reach out and give them your hand.  –Christina Darmides

Marr: This quote, to me, speaks to the loneliness of life.  How, even when we are loved, we often feel alone and bare the weight of our life and our tragedies alone, but also how we can reach out to each other and give and feel love.

 Excerpt

Rush was screwed. Every which way. He looked over his shoulder, away from the full moon that cast a full glow across the Ojai Valley and toward the girl who slept in the bed. Her face was relaxed in the moonlight, a pale alabaster with her pretty rosebud lips still bee-stung from his rough kisses and her wild hair a fiery halo that framed her face.

Nikki got to him. Her combination of naïveté, innocence, bravado, and pain-in-the-ass nature got to him, pulled him tight, closer than he should have been or ever expected to be. This was not what Ted Robinoff had in mind when he’d told Rush to get close. A sick feeling clenched through Rush’s gut. No, Ted hadn’t intended that Rush should bed Ted’s niece. A deep inhale of breath pulsed through Rush. What was this? What had he managed to do—his weakness to this silly, sad sort of girl would cost him his job, might cost him his cover, might cost him his entire career.

He closed his eyes. You couldn’t build a relationship upon a lie. And Nikki knew nothing about him other than his lies. He was meant to protect her; this was a finite gig. A gig that was meant to end and he was meant to slip seamlessly into her past as she found a future with her type of guy. A guy who really wanted to be in entertainment or a doctor or lawyer or perhaps an executive that rolled with Ted.

Not with a man who lied for a living. Not with a man who used his body, his mind, his smarts, and the money of the man he worked for to ferret out the deepest secrets people never wanted exposed. Finding secrets, exposing lies, was Rush’s specialty, and that was not the type of man Nikki Solange should ever be in a relationship with—Rush didn’t want her to be.

He turned back toward the cathedral window beside the bed. Shadows bounced around the edges of trees. They would return to Los Angeles tomorrow. He would tell Ted what had happened. There was no other way but to shed this guilt and take the hit. Ted would decide how to proceed because Rush was too damn close to even see.

Review

Technology really is something these days. Sophia is a teacher with the dull-drums. She has been married before, but not happily. Now divorced the guys she goes out with, when she goes out aren’t really better. Sophia is just going through the motions of dating. Her current date who readers meet at the start of the novel is a fellow teacher she has been seeing for awhile, but there are no sparks. Not one zap of excitement (at least to her) in the relationship. I mean the guy is nice enough, but a little boring. Sophia wants to change her blue life to a rainbow colored life. Then one night she gets a Facebook friend request from Kayden. She knows the name, he was a friend of her brothers growing up. So Sophia does some checking up on the guy and finds out he OK. Not crazy or anything. So she accepts the requests. And this is how it ALL starts. They end up chatting, then chatting more and more. They must have i phones, for they Face-time one another often. Usually at night, like clock work one or the other call/chat with each other. After awhile school is over  for the summer and Kayden asks her to come visit him in New Orleans. She agrees, and after a long car ride from Florida to Louisiana, she is in his city, at his apartment…meeting for the first time face to face. Let’s just say that the weather is not the only thing hot and steamy in New Orleans. Kayden shows Sophia around and shows her the sights to be seen. They drink, they laugh, they grow attracted to each other. Kayden works everyday of the week, yet both he and Sophia try to visit each other when they can work it into their schedules. Then Sophia gets busy with school starting again. In the meantime, Kayden’s past starts to catch up with him. He tells Sophia parts, but not quite the complete story. Their relationship goes through several trials. Kayden breaks Sophia’s heart over and over. However, she always returns back to him. He brightens her world, his touch ignites her emotions, body, and life itself. Sophia cannot imagine a world without Kayden. Will it work out for these two? Or will Kayden’s past tear them apart forever? Only one way to find out. Read it and see…

New Image

3.5  for writing style and story line. Love Kayden, but wow, his past is just really hard on their relationship. This was a debut novel by Chelle Bliss. I enjoyed the book, but there were times, that it felt the story just went on and on about Kayden and his past repetitively. However, I am looking forward to Kayden’s story coming out soon. Maybe that will explain more in depth about his past and fill in some of the blanks, so I understand his character a little better.

5 star book review ratingRomance in Untangle Me gets the BIG 5 🌟

This book was a Rockin’!!!  Kayden and Sophia’s Love for one another was explosive! This book boyfriend makes you see comets instead of stars. It is HOT, HOT, HOT in the romance department. One word says it all…

sexy-pink-glitter

Now for the tear factor.

2.5 rating

As mentioned this novel had its LOVE ups and downs. There were parts where Kayden broke Sophia’s heart into several tiny pieces. Thus my emotional reading tears sliding down my face. I did not ugly cry, but there were times that just really shook me up.

Do I recommend this novel? Absolutely!!!

The Healer’s Gift

THGcoverupdated

Publication Date: August 31, 2013

Synopsis

Ainsland, a virgin widow fleeing from her husband’s murderer, and Collum, a healer who possesses supernatural abilities, are brought together by circumstance.  What begins as a marriage of convenience for the couple evolves into one of great love and passion.  Yet, Collum’s tragic past and the ever-looming threat of Ainsland’s malevolent pursuer’s appearance in their close-knit rural community overshadows their ability to be truly content.  When evil strikes and all seems lost, will it be the resilient, headstrong Ainsland who is able to save herself, her husband, and the people she has come to know and cherish or will Collum, determined and wise, somehow manage to rescue the love of his life before time runs out?

Divider-15

Excerpt 1

After Maggie and her son had departed, Ainsland said, “I like her.”

“She’s very likable,” Collum agreed, as he arranged some herbs in piles on the table.

“You told her about the weaker twin.”

     “I did.”

     “Why?”

“Because it hasn’t improved.  In fact, it’s worsened.  All I can hope for is that it doesn’t die soon so that the other twin can have more time to develop before birth.”

     “It’ll die for certain?”

Hearing the tone in her voice, he raised his head from his task and narrowed his eyes.

“You cannot tell her,” he commanded.  “Already she’ll blame herself, since she didn’t want two more babies to begin with.  If you tell her now, it could kill her.  This could kill her anyway.”

Ainsland paled and asked, “What do you mean?”

“The healthy baby isn’t in the right position for birth.  Should the other twin die and birth should begin before the healthy twin has time to turn, both twins could die unborn, and Maggie could die in an effort to deliver them.”  With a shrug, he said, “It happens.”

“You unfeeling bastard!  You speak of it like you’re talking of the weather!” she snapped.  “How can you look on life that way?”

“Because it’s as natural as the weather.  Because I’ve seen women die in childbirth before.  Sometimes I can save them, and sometimes I can’t.  I can’t allow myself to worry over what might happen.  If she dies, I’ll grieve for her.  If she doesn’t, I’ll be thankful.  What’s so unfeeling about that?”

She turned  away from him and didn’t answer.

“I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t call me a bastard,” he went on.  “A bastard I may be, but it’s not common knowledge around this area.”

     “You…you are a bastard?”

     “I am.”

Ainsland forgot her anger, rose from the bed, and went slowly to the table.

     “Do you know your parents?”

     “I do.”

     “And?”

“And it’s none of your affair.”

     “You…you…man!”

He laughed and lowered his head.

“Ah, you try to insult me.  And after I saved your life.”

“I may owe you my life, but that doesn’t mean you should be so….”  She searched for the appropriate phrase.  “You’re infuriating!”

“I’m sorry you find me so.  Now, would you hand me that jar near your elbow?”

With a sigh, Ainsland did as he asked.  By the end of the afternoon, she’d helped him with various tasks around the cottage.

“You’re a good assistant,” he said, as they sat down to a meal of porridge and dried apples.  “When you’re not busy being a pain in the rump, that is.”

“A pain in the rump I may be, but I’d appreciate it if you’d refrain from calling me that.  It’s not common knowledge in this area.”

He blinked in surprise then grinned broadly at her.

Excerpt 2

Ainsland.”

Collum’s voice was low and throaty and almost unrecognizable.  Ainsland opened her eyes and looked up at him.  She became aware of how tightly she was gripping his shoulders.  She relaxed her fingers but did not release him.

“Are you all right, little one?”

She nodded and tried not to cry.  She seemed stretched beyond her limits.  As she lay wordlessly beneath him, Collum began to move his hips slowly in a circular pattern, never pulling out of her.  She bit her lip at the discomfort but didn’t ask him to stop.  After a time, the pressure seemed to lessen slightly, and her loins began to ache for what she innately knew was meant to be.

Collum became still, his shaft rigid inside of her.  He was finding it difficult to think clearly.  He had done all that he could to ease the tight flesh, and the glove of her passage was beginning to pulse with unmistakable urgency.  His own urgency could be reined in no longer.

He stroked her with slow thrusts.  She moaned and lifted her hips slightly so that he went further inside of her.  There was an instant tightening of her flesh around him, and the little cries she made awakened the true passion within him, a passion he’d denied for too long.

Ainsland screamed his name over and over.  The muscles surrounding him quivered and throbbed, and Collum released in her.  Ainsland arched her back with her final cry of pleasure then lay trembling underneath her husband.  He rested his head beside hers and sighed, but he didn’t pull out or attempt to get up.

Excerpt 3

“Collum!”  Richard’s voice boomed in his son’s aching brain.  “You must stop this or you will not live!”

Richard’s youngest son ceased his struggles and lay still in his father’s arms.  In a moment of clarity, the healer forced back the envelope of fever that surrounded him and focused on his weakened body.  His skull was knitting itself back together nicely.  The ribs and shoulder continued to ache, but the pain was not so acute.  Most of his bruises and cuts were healing, albeit slowly.  His broken leg throbbed fiercely, and Collum doubted that he would ever walk normally again – if he lived to walk again.

His belly had been badly infected.  From the fresh lacerations near the area, he deduced that Jordan must have been waging a repetitive series of battles with persistent infection.  Collum imagined what steps he himself would take if he were the healer and Jordan was the patient.  It would be a ceaseless cycle of cut, drain, clean, stitch, and dress.

“Father?” Collum rasped in a voice that he himself did not recognize.  “Mother?”

“My shining boy,” Vivien said, kissing his temple and stroking his hair.  “My little wolf.”

He almost smiled at her use of the old pet name she’d given him when he’d been a baby.  She had one for each of them, he recalled.  Edward was the little hawk; Landon was the little fox; Grayson was the little foal; Inya had been the little robin; and John was the little deer.  It had been years since he’d heard any of these nicknames spoken aloud.  He had almost forgotten them completely.

Collum became aware of how badly his back ached.  He reasoned that his body was not doing its job of purifying itself.  Between the fever and his prolonged periods of unconsciousness, it must have certainly been a trial to get him to take in enough liquids.  Significant weight loss was to be expected as well.

“Ainsland,” he mumbled through parched lips.  “I – I need her.  I must have water.”

And then she was near to him, pulling him against her chest and offering him tiny sips from a cup.  He could not have been more content had she offered him her breast.  His feeble efforts to touch her hair made her cry.  Once the cup had been drained, she passed it to someone and took his hand in hers and brought it to her cheek.

I am dying, Collum thought.  My body will cease to function soon if I can’t make it heal.

Divider-15Excerpt 4

     “Hello, child!”

Beastie began to bark and snarl at the man on the horse who was approaching them from behind.  Ainsland touched the hilt of the knife in her pocket and called out warily, “Hello to you!”

The stranger appeared to be nearing forty.  His hair was black peppered with gray.  He carried himself like a soldier.

“I mean you no harm!” he called back.  “I merely wish to pass.”

“Beastie, come here,” Ainsland ordered.  As the dog stood alert by her side, she said, “Good dog.”

The man rode closer then paused in front of them.  He removed the hood of his cloak and smiled down at the woman and dog.  Ainsland could only imagine what they must look like to a stranger.  Her heavy cloak and dress were dirty; her hair was surely a mass of tangles; and she felt sick and drained.  The dog’s coat was dotted with dirt and leaves.

“Not a child,” the man said slowly.  “Forgive me, my lady.  May I ask where you’re headed?”

“Varnan,” she replied cautiously.  “And you?”

“Woolrith.”  In response to her blank stare, he added, “Past Varnan.”

     “Oh.”

“My name is Harold.  And yours?”

Thinking of the Elders’ suggestion so long ago, she volunteered, “It’s Eleanor.”

“Well, Lady Eleanor, would you like to relieve your feet for a time and use my mount?”

Ainsland looked longingly at the horse then shook her head and said, “Thank you, but no.”

“My lady, I’m a former soldier and am used to long campaigns across treacherous ground.  It won’t bother me to walk all the way to Varnan if need be.”

     “I thank you, but no.”

     “You’re determined to collapse?”

“No, sir.  I’d happily ride the horse.  However, if it should throw me it might harm my child, and I’ve already lost one too soon.”

His eyes filled with pity, and she turned away and resumed her former pace.  After a few moments, she heard the horses hooves behind her, and Beastie turned and growled fiercely at the animal.

“He’s a loyal one, isn’t he?” Harold asked pleasantly.

     “Very,” Ainsland agreed.

After some minutes of silence, Harold said, “Please, Lady Eleanor.  You make me tired watching you.  Surely it can’t be better for your child that you –”

“I refuse to take a chance on the horse.”

“Where is your husband?  Does he know of your exertions?”

“My husband doesn’t even know about the child.  He’s disappeared, and I’m going to his family to ask for help.”

     “Disappeared?  When?”

     “Six days ago?  No, seven.”

“And you worry about foul play?”

“He’s a healer.  He was on his way to see to someone when he and his apprentice were overtaken.  I know there’s foul play.”

     “And the apprentice?”

“Will live, but he couldn’t describe the attackers.”

“Lady, you have another two days walk to Varnan, assuming it doesn’t snow.  The trail is already seven days old.”

“You’re already going that way.  Could you ride ahead and give word to my husband’s brother?”

“Would that I could.  My horse went lame before I left Nevres.  This old fellow was the only horse available.  He’s a good mount, but he has too many years on him to go that far that fast.”

She nodded and reached up to pat the horse’s neck.  The dog quieted when he saw this.  Harold got down from the horse and held the reins in one hand.

“Why did you dismount?”

“I won’t ride while a woman with child is forced to walk beside me.  It wouldn’t be right.”

Excerpt 5

Collum stood near the well looking up into the clear night sky at the two moons.  When Ainsland came up beside him, he took her hand and wordlessly urged her to walk with him.  She could feel the sadness emanating from him and wanted to say something comforting but knew that it was unnecessary.  He understood without having to be told.

They walked deeper and deeper into the woods, and Ainsland began to become concerned.  If something should happen to one of the children, then how would anyone find them?

“Don’t worry,” Collum said unexpectedly.  “I explained to Edward where you and I were going.  He could find it if he had to.”

They went past the place where Collum had found her unconscious fourteen years earlier.  Another five minutes passed and then another.  Just when Ainsland was about to ask him how much further they had to go, he slowed to a stop near some overgrowth on the side of a hill.  Without warning, he released her hand and ducked between what appeared to be brambles and poison ivy.

     “Collum, what are you doing?”

“Trust me, little wife,” he called to her, his voice muffled by the living things that stood between them.  “Come to me.”

Pulling her cloak tightly around her, Ainsland gradually pushed her way through and was surprised to find that there were no thorns.  She assumed that there was also no poison ivy as she went blindly forward.

Ainsland had only just emerged through the tangle of vines, plants, and branches when Collum took her in his arms and pulled her against him.  He bent low to kiss her, and she felt the familiar passion begin to build between them.  Abruptly, he released her then gestured for her to look around.

Walls of the thick overgrowth surrounded them on all sides.  In front of them lay a small pool of water that was surrounded by lush groundcover and a multitude of night-blooming flowers.  The air smelled sweet, and the moonlight shone brightly, unobstructed in the clearing.

“What is this place?” Ainsland breathed.

“My gift to you,” he answered.

“I don’t understand.  I’ve passed here many times and never suspected that any of this was here.  Do others know of it?”

“Edward does, because I showed it to him tonight.  Otherwise, no.”

Still perplexed, Ainsland began to slowly walk around the little pool.  She knelt beside it and touched the glassy surface with her fingers.  The water was warm.

“Part of the hot springs,” Collum told her.

“Was this place always like this?” she asked, as he knelt beside her.

“When I discovered it years ago it was an almost impenetrable area of the forest.  However, I found herbs within that could be located nowhere else, so I began to clear the useless weeds and dead brush.  I found you not far from here soon afterwards, and I sensed that this was meant especially for us to share.  I’ve been working on making it ready ever since.”

About the Author

Barbara Cutrera has been a writer since childhood but didn’t begin writing novels until 1999. Her first novel to be completed was Over, Under, Across & Through, which is the initial book in her Real World fiction series that also includes A Good Man’s Life and Mercy. Not satisfied to be limited by writing in only one genre, she next penned a mystery blended with romance called In a Manner of Speaking. Cutrera took a dare from friends who suggested she write a romance and wrote The Healer’s Gift. She has since added A Lovely Dream, a romantic thriller, Prim and Proper, a true romance with a touch of mystery, and Lucky, a thriller set in the not-so-distant future in post-plague Earth, to her list of novels in queue for publication. She has recently completed another work of fiction entitled Compromising Positions and has started writing a romance entitled Sight Unseen.

Cutrera, a member of the Romance Writers of America and the Florida Writers’ Association, was born and raised in Louisiana and moved to Florida with her family in 2004. She works with the visually-impaired and is visually-impaired herself. She firmly believes that our minds are only limited by the restrictions that we place upon them. That is why her literary credo is, “Transcending reality by exploring it one story at a time….”

A young widower struggles to overcome substance abuse and emotional instability as his daughter attempts to find solace for them despite overwhelming odds. Set in southern Louisiana, Over, Under, Across & Through tells the story of Tristan and Sarah Maes and their extended family. The novel is divided into three parts. Each part highlights a different time period in their lives during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s and explores how the father and daughter and those closest to them confront abuse, neglect, and deception. While Tristan grapples with the loss of his wife and the subsequent battle with alcohol and drugs, Sarah strives to carve out a normal life for herself. This is made more difficult by the onset of juvenile macular degeneration, which results in partial blindness that develops during her teenaged years. Parent and child must come to grips with their actions and choices in the past in order to gain the elusive peace of mind so desperately sought by both in their present.

Barbara Cutrera’s Blog

December 15, 2013

Since my proofreader for blogs (Budge) didn’t catch the error in the title of this week’s blog, I’m re-posting it with the correction.  Sigh.  See below.

This past week was atypical regarding my literary endeavors, but that was fine.  My 82 year-old mother was here in Florida for a holiday visit.  She came for a week, since we couldn’t get together for Thanksgiving or Christmas.  I worked at my day job for the Division of Blind Services in the morning then took off each afternoon so that I’d have most of the day to spend with her.  She’s not an early riser.  We kept her busy, and we all had a great time.  However, the visit left virtually no time for writing or promoting.  That was okay.  She’s my mother and is 82.  A week together is worth the time lost when it comes to my literary career.

I did take some time to create the exciting event that will take place this Wednesday, December 18th, from 6-10 p.m.  It’s sponsored by Reading, Writing and Book Reviews and allows authors to “take over” the Facebook page in the spirit of the holiday season.  The event is by invitation only, so if you haven’t friended or liked my Facebook pages then do so right now athttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Barbara-Cutrera-Author/294829647240199 (my author page) which feeds off my primary page of https://www.facebook.com/ .  If you’ve been invited and haven’t yet accepted, then join the event now!   Then you can invite others to the event as well!  I’ll be posting, chatting, posting excerpts, giving away prizes, and discussing The Healer’s Gift and my other works.  This is my first “take over” event and is called Holiday Author-A-Thon – Barbara Cutrera Takes Over!  :)
