“Does it still stand?” I asked.

“Of course it does. However, I have one condition.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Which is?”

“You have to show me that beautiful ass—just a peek.”

I rolled my eyes but couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. “Nope.”

“Then you at least have to cook for me all week.”

“That I can do.”

“Without wearing any bottoms…”

I scrunched up a napkin and threw it at him. “Pervert.”

He chuckled. “I never told you I wasn’t.”

I pretended to be offended but it only made me feel warm inside.

“So, when are you being kicked out?”

“Monday.”

“That gives me plenty of time to get rid of all the filth.”

I pulled my hair out of the hair tie and let it fall to my shoulders. Hawke’s eyes immediately went to the strands and his expression changed. I fluffed the hair around my scalp with my fingers. After being pulled back all day, it felt good. “You seem like an organized person.”

“Sorry?” A blank expression was on his face.

“You said your place is covered in filth. But you seem so clean.”

“Oh…” He finally came back to the conversation. “No, I live like a pig just like every other guy.”

“I’m so excited to stay with you…”

He chuckled. “Don’t worry. I’ll give it a thorough cleaning. Just don’t tell your brother you’re staying with me.”

“Why?” That was an odd request. “He knows we hang out.”

“I don’t want to give him the wrong impression. Knowing him, he’ll jump to the worst possible conclusion. He doesn’t act like it when you’re around, but he’s fiercely protective of you. If he thought I even touched your hand, he’d come after me with a chainsaw.”

“That’s a little excessive…”

Hawke shrugged. “He’s your brother. If he’s crazy, you’re crazy.”

“That’s a slippery slope…”

His phone lit up on the table with a message. I knew I shouldn’t read it but I did. Come over tonight. It was from a girl named Brittany. I quickly looked away like I hadn’t read it.

Hawke locked the screen so it turned black. He knew I saw it.

I kept acting like I didn’t. I knew what he did in his spare time. It shouldn’t bother me but sometimes it did. It wouldn’t matter if he seemed happy, but it was clear he was miserable. It seemed like he was making himself suffer on purpose.

But why?

“I should head home,” Hawke said as he slid out of the booth.

Or you should head to Brittany’s. “Me too. I have to start packing. Ugh, I’m not looking forward to that.”

“I would offer to help, but I don’t want to.” He gave me a smile that told me he was joking.

“I’ll see you later.”

“Bye, Muffin.”

I raised an eyebrow. “What did you just call me?”

“What?” He turned back around. “You’re the muffin girl. So, I’ll call you Muffin.”

“That’s the silliest nickname I’ve ever heard.”

“And yet, it fits you perfectly.”

Prologue

13 years ago

1984

Liane watched Blake as he dug a hole in the sand next to her. She looked over her shoulder to make sure her mommy was still there. She was, talking to Blake’s mommy, known to Liane as Aunt Cathy, though she knew she wasn’t really her aunt. Her big sister was walking down the beach with a friend. Beth was nine and Liane loved her, though Beth didn’t like her little sister much.

Digging her toes in the sand, she laughed at the feeling between her toes. Liane loved the beach, and it was so fun that they got to come see Blake and his family every summer here at Sanibel Island, Florida. It was far away from her house, and it was always warm here.

Unlike her, Blake was the big brother. He had two little sisters, and his mommy had a baby boy in her tummy. Liane was jealous about that. She wanted to have a baby in her mommy’s tummy, but Mommy said no. She said Liane was her baby and it was going to stay that way.

“LiLi,” Blake said, using his nickname for her. She knew that she’d known Blake her entire life, but she was only five years old. They were both starting kindergarten when summer was over, and she was scared.

“Yeah?” Liane leaned over, looking into the deep hole that Blake had made on the beach. “What are you doing?”

Blake sat back, his dark eyes looking at her. She loved his eyes; they reminded her of chocolate, her favorite candy. His blonde hair stuck out everywhere, and sand was all over his face, making Liane laugh.

“What’s so funny, LiLi?” Blake crossed his little arms, a pout forming on his face. “Don’t laugh at me.”

“I’m not,” Liane stopped, her tummy hurting at the thought of making Blake upset with her. “I’m sorry. You just have sand on your face, and you look like a snowman in the sand.”

Blake laughed too, making Liane’s tummy feel better. He was her best friend. She had lots of friends at home in Kentucky, in her neighborhood and at her preschool, but none of them were like Blake. Even if he was a boy, which would make her best friend at home, Gretchen, wrinkle up her nose. She hated boys. “So maybe you need some sand on you, too, LiLi.” With that, he reached over and wiped some of the wet sand on her face, making her squeal.

They stood up, running after each other into the water, their mother’s watching with amused smiles on their faces.

“Wouldn’t it be great,” Liane’s mother, Margaret, said to her best friend Cathy, “if someday they got married.”

Cathy laughed, her hand on her protruding stomach. “They’re five years old, Margaret. Let’s not rush things.” She watched her son and Margaret’s daughter splashing and hugging each other, wondering what the future held for all of them.

Growing up in Southern California, with lots of surfer manliness surrounded me, was certainly a good boost for reading about delicious alpha guys and the women who adore them. When I learned I had a knack for telling these stories too, I guess you could say I was doomed–though my path toward romance novelist took a few detours via a concert-reviewing gig for my college newspaper (free show tickets…backstage passes…that was a no-brainer), artist interviews for a Beverly Hills dance music mag, personal assistant work for a record producer, dance club disc jockey, and a lot of fun in the hospitality industry.

These days, I still live in California, and have found an amazing alpha guy of my own who was brave enough to marry me. We live on a street that looks like Brigadoon, with our beautiful daughter. I have the best life ever, and never forget to thank the Big Guy Upstairs for it, either.
