~ HINDLEY ~

I couldn’t tell if the pounding in my head was real or a dream. The throbbing was nauseating and I felt like I was on the Merry-Go-Round from Hell. The stench of cigarette smoke filled all my senses and I could feel my throat constricting. There was no way this could be real. I had to be in the middle of a dream, maybe even a nightmare.

What the hell happened last night? Come on Hindley, think! Suddenly, images flashed through my mind, pole dancing, Tequila shots, Gap Boy, and vomiting, lots of vomiting. Oh shit! All the sudden, my door flew open with a bang as the doorknob hit the wall.

“What the fuck is going on in here?” Dana screamed. Each syllable she uttered felt like daggers piercing my head. “Holy hell! You finally got laid!”

Dana Di Grazio was my best friend and I could always count on her to be as blunt as a sailor, with a mouth like one, too. I stretched my arms above my head, feeling every muscle in my body scream in agony. “What the hell are you talking about Dana?”

“That hottie next to you!” I stared at her in disbelief . “Look!” She said pointing to the other side of my bed. Oh shit!

I turned my head to see what Dana was pointing at and gasped in horror when I saw a man’s face less than a foot away from mine. I shot straight up in bed, pulling the covers up to hide my body as I tried to push as far away from him as I could.

“Holy hell!” Dana laughed. “You finally screwed some random dude from a bar.”

“I did not!”

She approached the bed as if she were going to rip the covers off. “Do y’all have any clothes on under there?”

“Dana, stop!” I shouted as I held the blanket tighter. I slowly lifted the covers and peered underneath, afraid of what I might find. I blew out a loud sigh as I saw I still had my tank top on from last night. And my bra! Oh, thank God!

“Stop what?” I heard a deep voice grumble. I diverted my gaze from his muscular chest up to his eyes. A slow tingle ran up and down my spine as I watched him pull his arms up over his head. His pose showed off every rippling muscle in his upper body and I beat myself up for not remembering being intimate with him last night.

“Good morning Drunk Girl. Enjoying the view?” His words were sweet and seductive and I wanted to hear him talk more, but I was mortified he’d caught me checking out his body.

RORY

“Rory,” she blew out.

“Yes, Hindley,” I smiled against her skin.

“I love you.” Her words sounded desperate and pleading and my stomach cramped with anxiety. I lifted off her completely.

“What’s wrong, Hindley?”

“Nothing,” she said, pulling on my neck. “I just want you to always remember, no matter what happens in the next thirty-five days, that I love you.”

I pulled her hand away from my neck and broke our embrace.

“What’s wrong? What are you talking about?”

She climbed back on top of me, taking my face in both her hands, searching my eyes for traces of something that I couldn’t comprehend.

“I’m talking about the fact that I love you more than anything or anyone on this earth. I’m talking about how I’d do anything to protect you, no matter what it is.”

Her words were soft and gentle but I still felt a tug at my heart that didn’t settle well with me. The feeling should comfort me and bring me great peace but tonight, I felt as if Hindley’s love for me may be her own undoing, a block around her neck that had the potential to drown her.

No matter how much I loved her, I would never let her be consumed by it. I had to be willing to pull away if ever my love endangered her life. My only problem was I was a weak motherfucker, a selfish bastard and I feared I wouldn’t be able to walk away from her if that time ever came. I shook internally, realizing I’d never survive without her but knowing one day, I might have to, to keep her alive. But tonight, she was all mine and I was going to enjoy her.

10 Things (or a few extra!) you Don’t Know About Julie Farley

1. I was named after the song “Julie do ya love me” by Bobby Sherman. My mom used to listen to it on her way to and from the hospital after she had her first daughter, Jennifer. Jennifer died 3 weeks after she was born. When my mom had me she wanted my name to begin with a J and remembered that song.

2. I don’t like to fly but don’t let it stop me from traveling. I have a reoccurring dream that I am in an airplane with my best friend from high school and the plane crashes in strange places. We always survive somehow. I think the dream has something to do with the time she and I were stranded in Ithaca airport as teenagers.

3. I love fried clams and really miss Peter’s Clam Bar on Long Island. I used to go there each time I went home. I even miss the beautiful view of the dump. I also miss the diner – a good cheeseburger and fries with a real pickle.

4. I can read all day long. I love to sit with my 9 year old and read on beanbags in front of the fire.

5. I am in awe of my children and each of their unique personalities. They make me smile all day long.

6. I love kids and am not bothered by dozens playing in my house. Probably because I used to teach 28 inner city first graders in Chicago.

7. I love Paris. My creative husband even painted Parisian cafe scenes on the bathroom walls in our old house. I am sad that I won’t be running the half marathon in Paris but know it is the best decision for my cousin.

8. I am a writer. My 9th grade English teacher, Ms. Cuccurillo(sp), encouraged me to write creatively and I didn’t give it much thought until about 12 years ago. I wish I had been encouraged to be more creative as I was growing up.

9. I hate to cook. I don’t have the patience for it. When Alex was 3 I told him it was time for dinner and he went to get his coat. I do like to eat though and can only eat meat if I haven’t seen it raw.

10. I love Neil Diamond. I can always listen to Sweet Caroline.

12. I have lived in New York, Indiana, Chicago, and Richmond. I would move back to Chicago in a heartbeat if I could afford to live in Lincoln Park with 4 kids.

13. I dream about the future and have been right. I can read people’s energy pretty easily. It freaks people out so I don’t like to talk about it.

14. I sleep with my hair covered. When I was little a man came up to me in the grocery store and told my grandpa that son of sam was killing people with my haircolor. My grandfather called him a screwball and left but I never forgot about it.

15. I like mixing popcorn and junior mints

About the Author

Annalisa Nicole

I am an “Indie” adult contemporary romance author. I am a wife and a stay at home mom. I have been married to my wonderful husband since 1996. I love being a stay at home mom to our two teenage boys. We have a handful of pets, a dog named Lucy (who is in my books), a guinea pig named Flufy, (my son spells her name that way) and a cat named meow-meow, who adopted us many years ago and has never left.

I never liked reading as a kid and I only started reading romance novels in the past few years. Soon I couldn’t get enough of them. My Kindle and I are inseparable now. A thought occurred to me in December of 2012 that maybe I could write a romance novel. So I went to work with the encouragement of my husband and my sister-in-law. It didn’t take long to figure out that I really enjoyed writing.

I entered my book in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest in January of 2013. Needless to say my three hundred word pitch didn’t even make it through the first round. My book never even got read. So now what do you do with a 50,000+ word book? With more encouragement by my wonderful family I decided to self- publish it. So here I am today a self- published author. It has been a lot of hard work but I wouldn’t change a single thing.

It has not been an easy road and there has been a lot of self- doubt, but I stuck with it and I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve been blessed to have been put in contact with some amazing people that have supported and encouraged me every step of the way.

The light from the bathroom splays across the bed, illuminating her features just enough for me to see the way the blush heats the soft planes of her face. Her long, thick eyelashes rest there just above her cheeks, brushing her newly sun-kissed skin. I can just barely see the light dust of freckles that dance across the bridge of her nose.

As she gives me the small smile that always causes my breathing to hitch, those rogue dimples of hers pop up and are just begging to be kissed. She opens her eyes and I feel my heart stopping for what feels like the millionth time today.

Every time she looks at me, everything else simply ceases to exist. My girl is beautiful. She’s simply breathtaking and she really has no idea. I’m under her spell, completely enraptured by her, but she doesn’t seem to have a clue.

I tighten my grip on her bare waist as I trace the outline of her perfect lips, continuing to marvel at her before I’m able to speak again. “You are absolutely everything to me, Sweetheart. I grew up in Texas and moved to Florida when I met the love of my life 13 years ago. I wrote my first poem when I was five and it was about my love affair with pickles. I still love pickles but I like to think my writing has grown since then. I absolutely adore anything to do with books whether it’s writing them or devouring them in one sitting. I live on music, love, and sweet tea. I am known for my silly but blunt personality. I’ve been lucky enough to find the love of my life, marry him and now we’re working on our happily ever after. He inspires me in everything I do, but especially in telling love stories. I’m an ordinary girl living an extraordinary love and I’m so happy I get to share it with the world through my writing.
